It is Monday, the Monday of the last working week of April. Although in my case, I work from home, on the computer and on my cell phone, that doesn't make much of a difference. My #life has been quiet today, it rained a little, but the electricity worked well despite that, that is, the failures were minimal and did not last long, that is already something worth celebrating. I would like the situation of public services to be better in #Venezuela, but I have to adjust to what my reality is. It is worth keeping hope that things will improve in the near future, but you have to have a cool and clear mind enough to understand the reality in which we are.

Let's put aside the comment about my personal life, which actually doesn't sound very nice, let's move on to comment on the ephemeris of #History that I selected for today, it's one that has to do with #fast-food, one of the most popular and common, as far as I know: Today is International Hot Dog Day.

Es lunes, el lunes de la última semana laboral del mes de abril. Aunque para mi caso, que trabajo desde casa, en la computadora y el celular, eso no implica mayor diferencia. Mi #vida ha sido tranquila el día de hoy, llovió un poco, pero la electricidad funcionó bien a pesar de eso, es decir, las fallas fueron mínimas y no duraron mucho, eso ya es algo digno de ser celebrado. Me gustaría que la situación de los servicios públicos fuera mejor en #Venezuela, pero tengo que ajustarme a lo que es mi realidad. Vale la pena mantener la esperanza de que las cosas van a mejorar en algún tiempo cercano, pero hay que tener la mente lo suficientemente fría y clara para entender la realidad en la que estamos.

Dejemos de lado ya el comentario de mi vida personal, que no está sonando muy bonito en realidad, mejor pasemos a comentar sobre la efemérides de la #Historia que seleccioné para hoy, es una que tiene que ver con #comida rápida, una de las más populares y comunes, hasta donde tengo conocimiento: Hoy es el Día Internacional del #HotDog.

The origin of the day itself is not clear, since this date has an American origin, but it happens that the national day of this dish in the United States is in the month of July, in short, I am not sure why this difference in dates.

Another curious detail is about the very origin of this food, it is that although it became popular from North American culture, either through the movies or television series, as well as its almost inescapable association with baseball (as a mass sport), it happens that the origin of the preparation is of German origin. No está claro el origen del día en sí, pues esta fecha tiene un origen norteamericano, pero sucede que el día nacional de este platillo en Estados Unidos es en el mes de julio, en fin, no estoy seguro el porqué de esta diferencia de fechas.

Otro detalle curioso es sobre el origen mismo de esta comida, es que si bien se popularizó a partir de la cultura norteamericana, ya sea por el cine o las series de televisión, así como su asociación casi ineludible con el beisbol (como deporte de masas), sucede que el origen de la preparación es de origen alemán. Parece que esta idea de tomar un pan de corteza muy suave y de miga dispersa, hacerle un corte y colocar una salchicha en él, para luego agregar salsas o ingredientes adicionales, es una receta que llegó a los Estados Unidos con los migrantes alemanes del Siglo XIX, en 1867, se cuenta que fue un carnicero de origen alemán, Charles Feltman, el que fue pionero en vender perros calientes en un carrito en las playas de Coney Island (Nueva York). Idea que fue luego mejorada por uno de sus trabajadores, Nathan Handwerker en 1916, y se creó la primera red de locales de venta de HotDog.

I find it interesting that today this dish is considered almost a national dish when one thinks of the United States, besides that it is such a simple thing to prepare that it has spread without problems in all parts of the world. Yo encuentro interesante que hoy en día este platillo se considera casi que un plato nacional cuando uno piensa en los estados unidos, además de que es una cosa tan sencilla de preparar que se ha difundido sin problemas en todas partes del mundo. Claro que en distintos sitios recibe distintos nombres, de hecho en Venezuela y en Colombia le llamamos “Perro-Caliente”; en Argentina, Paraguay, Perú y Uruguay se les denominan “Panchos”; en Bolivia se les llaman “panchos”, “panchitos” y “jadocs”; en Chile he leído que le llaman “Completos”… En fin que hay una gran cantidad de nombres que se le dan, y apenas estoy mencionado algunos de los que le damos en América Latina.

En lo personal, esta preparación de comida rápida me trae recuerdos de cuando salía de paseo con la familia, o de cuando era estudiante y comía algo rápido en algunos de los puestos cercanos a la Universidad cuando estaba en camino a clases. Thanks for the good wish. As I said, I like Hot Dog, in fact in Venezuela we add many things as ingredients and it has become an interesting recipe.

Rather than being a sausage inside a bun and a thread of sauce on top, we add French fries, finely chopped cabbage, a little onion (raw or caramelized, depending on taste), grated cheese, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard... and actually many other ingredients and sauces, only limited by the imagination and the taste of the palate :)

I think it is true that they have taken advantage of their film and TV productions to promote their products and their culture, I think that somewhere they call it a 'transculturation strategy', in which culture is positioned (social values, food, language, etc.) as a desirable thing before the spectators.
So turning everything into spectacle and easily identifiable symbols anywhere in the world could be part of that strategy... That sounds a lot like a conspiracy theory (personal laugh)

It is a simple dish, in case of restrictions on the consumption of any meat, there are variants that use different types of sausages, there is even a more current variant that uses a Soy Meat sausage, with what turns out to be a completely vegetarian dish.

I imagine the reason that hot dog day is in July in the US is because it corresponds with the time when many people are cooking with outdoor grills, and hot dogs are often a big part of that.
