[Eng+Spa] World Donut Day + Día Mundial de la Dona

Escribo el registro del día viernes que ya finaliza teniendo a la gata de la casa, Vero, durmiendo en mis piernas, no es algo común, pues suele pasar más este tipo de situaciones con mi hermano, pero se siente bien y calentita tener a la gata acá. El clima de hoy fue lluvioso y un poco frío, tenía pensado salir a comprar algunos víveres adicionales, ya que me sentía mejor de la gripe, pero cuando ya estaba por salir, comenzó a llover y tan solo con asomarme a ver la lluvia, me regresó la flema de la nariz y los estornudos. No pude salir, pero espero que no me afecte mucho el no haber ido de compras hoy.

Hoy es el ‘Día Mundial de la Dona’, sí, este bollo dulce en forma de anillo, textura suave y múltiples posibilidades de cubiertas tiene su día en el calendario. En lo personal, recuerdo es la imagen de estereotipo de policías y #donas, de las viejas series y películas norteamericanas, aunque de seguro muchos más en la actualidad les resulta más sencillo pensar en un cierto personaje de piel amarilla que es un consumidor obsesivo de este bocadillo.
Al principio, yo no sabía mucho de esta fecha, pero al revisar un poco vi que tenía ya más de 100 años de historia desde que se comenzó a ver noticias sobre las "Doughnut Dollies" que eran voluntarias americanas en la Primera Guerra Mundial, o llamada la Gran Guerra en ese momento, eran jóvenes mujeres que brindaban apoyo a las tropas en Europa. En una de las imágenes de portada del medio de comunicación del Ejército de Salvación, se presenta una ilustración de una de las voluntarias en el territorio francés, mientras lleva una olla llena de Donas.

Aunque la imagen es de 1918, no fue sino hasta 1938 cuando se celebró el primer Día de la Dona, en Chicago (Estados Unidos), que fue tanto para honrar a las damas que fueron de voluntarias durante la guerra, como también para apoyar a las personas que estaban pasando graves necesidades por la Gran Depresión que azotaba al mundo en ese momento. Puede sonar tonto, pero en realidad, para la época de la guerra, poder disponer de un poco de pan que te recuerde a casa y te dé energía, puede ser de mucha ayuda para no perder la cabeza y permite luchar para sobrevivir un día más.
De la misma manera, durante la depresión, el lograr tener al menos un bocado de comida para sobrevivir un poco más y el lograr asirse a alguna hebra de esperanza era lo mejor para no entregarse a la desesperación, que llevaría en esa época a una ola de suicidios bastante elevada, así como a distintos problemas sociales más. Puede dar miedo lo que puede pasar cuando un grupo humano pierde la esperanza y ya no tienen perspectivas claras de futuro.
