I want to use this medium to greet all great Hivers. How has been your day so far, hope you are all doing good? I'm positive minded that it's all well and fine.

Virtually, it's almost every equipment in the Poultry farm that are important. Like I have mentioned in one of my previous posts, I made mention of the feeders, the Drinkers, Shovel, Broom, Bowls, Bucket and many more. All these things are tools that when you get to any Poultry farm, you are suppose to find them there. Also, there is another thing is so important to the Poultry farm just like every other equipments in the Poultry farm; and that's the litter materials.

What are litter materials?

Litter materials are waste from a particular product(primary use) that are liable to be used for secondary use purposes. When litter materials are categorised as waste, this means that the waste was meant to not have any purpose again until when occasion calls for it. Sawdust is one of the waste from sawmill in those days, to the extent that Sawmillers always found difficult to dispose because it's usually numerous and had no purpose. That's the historical antecedent of sawdust on the part of its usefulness. Sawdust is a waste from wood.

As time passes by, when the development of rearing Broiler birds starters, the sawdust as litter materials became relevant. It became relevant that even if you get to sawmill you might not find any. Then it now becomes something that Sawmillers put up on sales. A sac of sawdust now at N100($0.23) and if I want to rear birds from day old to six weeks during the raining where you have to changing this stuff, I need nothing less than 25 bags plus the mobility cost.

Their Importance to the Poultry farm?

Before sawdust became wider use for most populace of Farmers, there's this myth that day old birds eat sawdust because it has almost same resemblance to their culture feed, that they pick it. The truth behind that is that they are all fallacies. Day old birds don't eat sawdust. So some of the Importance are:-

  • Protect the birds dropping to stain or mess up the floor surface.
  • It prevents unbearable stench smell from the farm.
  • When it's newly changed, the broiler birds play with it helps keeping in shape their psychomotor domain.
