"Reading is connecting with spaces perhaps from the comfort of your home. The audacious reader learns to dilute dreams, thoughts and emotions that are found on the path of the writer, he gives space to inhabit pages and letters."

The Red Death is a story that develops the perspective of the human being in the face of death. And not exactly from a single point of death, but rather accompanied by a brutally strong disease that dragged anyone, without identifying strata or thrones. The story takes place in the middle ages, where premature medical knowledge and superstition ruled the crowd. An epidemic was unleashed with disastrous symptoms, which painted the bodies scarlet red, began quickly with general pains, dizziness and the fearsome red spots, the blood flowed through the pores and the last breath of the host soon ensued. The remarkable characteristics of the plague quickly separated the population, who preferred that those infected be cast aside, confined to a solitary death.

Invaded by fear, a Prince named Prospero, takes his abbey to seclude himself there in the company of close friends and many provisions. An impenetrable fortress for a human being and palpable fact of the selfishness that is unleashed in man. There, the distinctive high comforts of royalty could be appreciated, a perfect escape from the plague. Prosper by his side, he celebrated happily that his life was protected, the rest and external number of people in town did not matter to him at all. Everyone had to see how he escaped from the plague. The prince was so happy he decided to organize a gala, colors and stained glass decorated the environment, as well as enigmatic designs on the masks that covered the faces of those present.

The Red Death was not invited, but he could not miss the opportunity to execute in the face of so much selfishness. Those present left the dance and exchanged smiles for expressions of fear and spasm, none dared to touch him or oppose the passage of the cadaverous bundle. Despair takes over everyone, and after a short time death reigns in the environment, now it will take everyone.

Thoughts around The Masque of the Red Death

The text written by Poe shows the unbridled fear of death that affects human beings in the face of threatening contexts and illness as a whole. Epidemic cases and the like have always been a part of history, regardless of whether the origin is fantastic or real. But, what is evident to repeat is human behavior.

  • Low level of acceptance of death as a natural fact and belonging to the cycle of life.

  • Adoption of distancing and discrimination. Where healthy people walk away and infected people are marginalized. In some more recent cases, at least it can be noted that the conduct of the healthy is devoted to the search for solutions or cures that can provide the opportunity for continuity of life for the sick.

The attitudes portrayed in the Red Death remind me of the recent pandemic, COVID-19. Where human health was threatened and in the center of origin of the virus (Wuhan), it could be observed with a magnified lens throughout the world context. Some of the live reports transmitted that in said area where those affected were many, there were some infected people locked up in houses and apartments, sealed. People died and after a few days, the cleaning and sanitation authorities related to the health field came to dispose of the body. The cleaners had full protective suits to avoid contact. There were no viewing ceremonies or the like, there was no contact after the death of the individual and the protocol was fast. In view of the health picture, many left China, in search of better conditions to get away from the virus. As we see in Poe's story, fear, despair and superstition take over the minds. It seems that epidemics, viruses and similar movements, are transferred in the same time in conjunction with human behavior. Predictable.

Predecible.

Hello beautiful, human beings have a tendency I do not know to what extent if in the veins to be selfish and think only of ourselves, to some extent it is acceptable, but what is shown or shines in the book is that the ruler had no interest in the welfare of his people, as for your reflections in many countries the farewells were practically nonexistent, I remember seeing in the news a caravan of trucks with coffins in Italy many of those people spent their last moments surrounded by people they barely knew, that if they were in a hospital center.

So I do believe that we should change our way of thinking and being because if we all supported each other, the world would be very different.

Solos.
Fueron tiempos de locura aquí.

Ciertamente la humanidad necesita cambiar. Y sólo así el mundo será diferente.

Saludos, mil gracias por pasar. ✨🤗
