DON'T LOOK UP: A SATIRE MY REVIEW ON THE MOVIE

This movie was quite wonderful to watch because it represents some personal views on humanity as a species. We are fraught with layers upon layers of issues that have inadvertently inhibited our society. Please note that your opinion will be sincerely appreciated as it will add colour to a layman's review.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE MOVIE

So the movie begins when a Ph.D. student discovers a meteorite heading straight for earth and along with her professor makes attempts to inform the key echelons of society so as to begin preparations to divert the trajectory of the apocalyptic instrument.

On coming face to face with the leader of the United States of America, they find a selfish president who treats the news as callously as a child would a cucumber or carbon footprint or even dirt.

On their attempts to boycott the president's gag order, the politicians do what they know best...they made it political. And this ultimately results in the destruction of the planet along with their supporters, while the few rich and powerful of them, hastily scramble off the planet to seek shelter in another “earth-like planet”.

A SATIRE

There is a lot of literally elements to this work that I find quite fascinating but I’d love to touch on the work’s satirical aspect.

For those who may not know and may not have the time to check the meaning, according to Oxford dictionary a satire is the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

Firstly, the movie was quite funny and it was made obvious by some of the characters. There was in fact a divide, the scientists played by Jennifer Lawrence as Kate Dibiasky, the Ph.D. student and Leonardo DiCaprio as Dr. Randall Mindy, the professor were serious characters who knew and acknowledged the severity of the problem due to facts and findings buttressed by science while on the other side where the politicians played by Meryl Streep as President Orlean and Jonah Hill as Jason Orlean, the Chief of Staff, which just so happens to be her son.

The divide was quite unsettling. On one hand the politicians treated it as a weird joke or at most a means to score cheap points for political gains, while the scientists were terrified and were even willing to bend to the whims of those in power simply to save the planet.

It is a sad reflection of society as issues that could potentially result in the decimation of humanity or at least the society as we know it, have been trivialised due to political interests.

Issues like the Corona virus pandemic, climate change, poverty and migration, just to mention a few have slowly become political ideologies. The right-wing and the left-wing divide has constantly plagued modern society so much so that almost nothing is achieved. At some point in the movie, the meteor becomes visible in the sky, yet the citizens were divided into two. One group chanted “just look up”, while the other said “don't look up”. It mirrors the challenges faced by those who asks their counterparts to study empirical evidence about salient issues affecting the world only to receive scorns and shabby rhetorics.

SELF-INTEREST; A HUMAN TRAIT

This often reminds me of when the scientists were to see the president and while waiting, a 3-star general, who was supposed to take them in, lied to them, making them pay for snacks that were actually given for free. It was hilarious but true. Most people are selfish even when they don't need to be. Taking the little from people who need it, while they have much more.

Another instance was that the mission to throw the meteorite off-course was halted because there were allegedly precious minerals worth trillions of dollars in it. Due to their greed they placed money over the safety of the earth. This is akin to the various unsafe practices indulged in by individuals, which systematically harms the planet just because of a few bucks. Its quite sad to think of.

SUMMARY

The movie showed humanity at its lowest. It also showed the good we are capable of. Forgiveness, love, family, ingenuity and togetherness were all positive themes that one could see from the movie.

Honestly, I have a lot to talk about this movie because there are many salient points in it, but the truth is most people will not even read what I have to write, especially if it's more than a thousand words. So I'll stop with this.

We need a better way of doing things because we have just one earth. All the other planet that scientists talk about will never be the same as this one. And just like the movie, when the politicians relocated to another planet they thought was better than earth, they were eaten alive. Hehehe

Watch the movie.

I haven't read your review here because I haven't seen the film yet, it is on my watchlist though. I'm going to reblog it so I can come back to this after I've seen it!

Nice recap of the movie. To me, it was sooo much real life "satire" that i actually stopped watching... too much of this ignorance and arrogance already around me every day. :🙃

Hahahaha.. You stopped watching?? This is so funny. But they also showed that in the midst of all that, you'd find good things or redeemable qualities in some humans.

EI liked that movie a lot, it's pretty good to tell the truth, the part that makes me laugh the most is the potatoes that the commander charged the boys. 🤣🤣

Exactly. Imagine working as a high ranking official in the WH and yet scamming people of a few bucks.
