The Final Stage of Chili Harvest in the Dry Season

IMG_2402.jpeg

Hello Hive friends, I hope you are always healthy and blessed. In this post, I want to share some information about our activities in the garden. Greetings to all community members and stakeholders.

We are now entering the dry season, where rain has become rare; in fact, it hasn't rained at all in the last few weeks of January. Our chili garden behind our house is starting to dry out, and the soil appears to be hardening.

IMG_2406.jpeg

After several satisfactory harvests, we returned to the garden to pick chilies. This could be our final harvest, as the soil conditions are no longer conducive to maintaining the chilies.

Indeed, in addition to the dry and barren soil, the chili plants are also entering old age, an age when they are unproductive and will slowly dry out until they die. As seen in the images I've shared in this post, several chili plants appear to be drying out, with wilted leaves and black stems.

IMG_2404.jpeg

Even though we tried to fertilize and water the plants, this didn't help them recover, as the chili plants were already in their old age. Meanwhile, we hadn't watered them for the past few days, due to a lack of water in the garden. The water in our garden shed was also starting to dwindle, as there hadn't been any rain, so the water storage capacity was dwindling.

We picked the remaining chilies on their stems. While the quality of the chilies at this harvest stage was noticeably poor, they were still marketable, albeit at a low price. The remaining chilies appeared short and small, while some appeared curly and were beginning to wilt and turn red.

IMG_2411.jpeg

During the harvest, we sort the chilies, selecting only those that are still of good quality for sale. After the chilies are picked from the stems, we sort them again, removing the leaves, and we exclude any wilted chilies from the sacks.

Wilted chilies generally begin to turn red; these are stored for personal use as a cooking spice. The sorting process takes quite a while; we discard the bad chilies and pack only the good ones into sacks.

IMG_2407.jpeg

This sorting process ensures that the chilies sold are of the highest quality, ensuring their selling price remains stable. The sorting process is manual, with each chili being sorted into several piles.

After sorting, the chilies are placed in sacks. The resulting two sacks of chilies are sold to middlemen in our village. The price of chilies of this quality and shape is very low; these two sacks of green chilies only fetch around IDR 400,000, which is a bargain.

Meanwhile, some of the chilies we sorted were wilted green chilies and some red chilies. We ended up with about a bucket of chilies that couldn't be sold due to their low quality. We will use these chilies for cooking, and some will be distributed to our immediate family, so all the chilies are still usable despite the age of the chili plant.

Wow, I have to learn a lot from you about cultivating chilies. I tried it before but I failed because the leaves curled.

Congratulations

Whoa, that's a lot of chillies. That's a good harvest. Its sad though that they are already in a bad situation, but at least they gave you a lot of chillies during their prime. I guess you'll have to plant a new chili seeds in your garden soon once they dry out. Good luck on that.
