I have heard of it in the neighborhood, I have seen people crying profusely, some went as far as committing suicide while others became depressed for losing something tangible. I felt their pain but the feeling of a sympathizer can never be like the victim. The person that can correctly describe the taste of a soup is the one who has tasted it. I wish I had not tasted the pain of losing a precious thing in my life but wishes are not shock absorbers nor guarantee against this ugly incidence.

Some incidences are inevitable, though our ignorance can invite some unwanted events. I have looked critically at my modus operandi to see where I have possibly missed it but couldn't find any, I came to realize that the thief does not necessarily need to have any reason against you before burgling your store as far as he or she needs to satisfy a need which could be hunger, extravagant life and addiction. A dead conscience is opened to every thought and accepts every bit of it.

The unavailability of employment coupled with the effects of this COVID-19 pandemic has opened the eyes of many people to become business owners and side hustlers to support their means of living. Of course, self reliance is one thing everyone craves for in this world of many uncertainties. I am one of those that often advocate for personal business or alternative source of income. To walk the talk, I had to invest in a clothing business which by the grace of God was booming prior to the unfortunate incidence. It has never crossed my mind that I would lose almost all my goods in one night, and if had such dream I would have prayed earnestly or took some measures to avert it.
It was an ugly day of Saturday 4rd December, 2021, when my sales girls on getting to the office discovered an unusual way in which the entrance door to the store was half opened. A close look at the door, she discovered that it been burgled, guest what? Almost everything has been taken away. My phone rang at about 8:58am, usually a phone call from my sales girl means business negotiation with some high profile customers but the reverse was the case as she broke the news to me that we had lost almost all the clothes in shop to thieves. First, it was like a joke but I also believed that she could never joke with such situation, so, I had to go there to see things myself. Lo and behold on getting there I saw people gathered around my store, it was then I finally believed that something was really wrong. Your thoughts are as good as mine; the shop was almost emptied.

My thoughts refused to align, tears was far from my eyes because my brain was not communicating with the heart rightly due to shock, loss of investment and shame that accompanies it were some of the things going through my mind. I took a deep breath and left the place since there was no amount of weeping and crying could bring back my goods. I was advised to take up the case starting from the sales girl but I declined, I have no reason to put the innocent girl in trouble just to show that I have money.

It was a painful experience I would never wish for even my enemies let alone my friends but I have moved on. This has thought me some lessons, do your research about the environment you want to invest before venturing into business in that place, if possible get your personal security guards and don't put all your eggs in one basket. I also discovered that some customers that patronize you have ulterior motives and be careful whom you employ because your problem may come from within. I believe this post will help you to be more vigilant and tighten security around your investment. Shine your eyes in this festive season. Thanks for reading

Hello @popmanj,

This is a terrible experience you describe. To be robbed is not only a loss of money, it also causes us to lose faith in others.

We do not curate essays in the Ink Well community. We only curate short stories--fiction. There are communities where this essay would be appropriate.

We wish you well.

What a terrible experience. I'm sorry but I must remove your post from The Ink Well. We are a short story community, and we only accept fiction.
