There are moments in life that make us feel completely helpless, with no control over the situation or its consequences.

That afternoon on June 24, while the ground was shaking beneath the foundation of the building where I live, nine stories up, that’s exactly how I felt.
I stood still when the shaking began and heard my daughter say, “It’s shaking,” and then moved with her to another “safer” spot and waited there for a few seconds that felt like an eternity, watching as the shaking grew in intensity, subsided, and then grew even stronger—which surprised and frightened me greatly. I had experienced several tremors since the 1967 Caracas earthquake, and this was not normal.
I didn’t think of anyone at that moment as I listened to the screams outside, and what I did to keep myself together in the midst of my fear was to ask God for protection. It was a constant plea, repeating the words as I felt my soul calm down at the same time that the earth settled and the building stopped swaying.
Only then did my daughter and I get up and decide to go downstairs, accompanied by Isis, our dog. And it was after the initial shock that I realized the magnitude of the tragedy and thought of my children who live abroad—who must be very distressed—and of my family in Caracas.
Most of the neighbors had come downstairs, and we were gathered in the safest area of the apartment complex—a place where we’d met before during other moments of danger, but nothing compared to this. We were all united by fear and anxiety over not knowing what had happened, because there was no electricity and the phone lines were down.

But then, little by little, I began to calm down, and it helped me a lot not to be alone, but to be with our friends and neighbors, who were there to support us emotionally.
Over the following days, as the magnitude of the tragedy overwhelmed us and continued to affect us all, I realized that in moments like these, we can do a great deal to ease the pain of others.
Empathy and a deep desire to help manifest themselves in many ways. And even though our homes weren’t damaged, people came to bring us food in the days that followed. They knew we didn’t have electricity and couldn’t use the gas either.
Groups of people who had come together in the wake of the tragedy arrived with prepared meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and this continued not just the next day, but for several days, so they could distribute the food among all the families, making sure it reached those who couldn’t come down the stairs. We neighbors organized ourselves to help.
These days have been emotionally devastating, but amid all the sadness, despair, and fear, there is the love of every person who has stepped forward to comfort and embrace those deeply affected by these earthquakes—earthquakes that shook not only the ground but also their emotional and physical stability.
As in past situations, this reminds us that we are not just individuals, but that we are emotionally and spiritually connected. The suffering of others affects me as well, and to overcome it, we all need one another.
