The three friends were waiting at the exit of the study center where they worked to go home for the weekend. But the van that was going to take them to their places of origin had suffered a breakdown. A problem that, if it had been solved, would have changed what happened to them.

Ana, Zulay and Margarita had known each other for years and had been hired as teachers to organize this new center in a small town in a rural area. The population had requested this opportunity so that young people could study different careers without having to move to other places. The three of them, young recent graduates, had accepted the conditions of employment and among these was that due to administrative procedures they would receive their first salary in two months, so they were a little short of money.

They were living in the house of Mrs. Luisa, a very kind person who also prepared very tasty meals for them, typical of the plains. In addition, when they wanted to eat something else, they would go to the cafeteria on the corner where the young people who served them had given them credit. They would sit there when they left work to talk and drink one of the tasty fruit shakes they prepared there.

"What do we do now?," was the question Zulay asked when she was told the news, "we don't have money for the ticket and I really don't want to stay in this town this weekend. Her dark face made a grimace with her mouth, very typical of her when she was upset, and she pulled her long black curly hair into a ponytail.

"Tell me, my mother is waiting for me to visit my nephew who was born yesterday, she will be upset if I don't come back". Ana was a very responsible girl and very attached to her mother with whom she lived alone since her father died and her sister got married. With her short stature, slim body, girlish face and short brown hair, she looked much younger than the 21 years she had just turned 21.

"I think our only option is to ask for a queue at the exit of the village", was the comment of Margarita, the oldest of the group. A very determined young woman and the one who always carried the conversation. Tall and with sharp green eyes, she always attracted the attention of male gazes, but she was not a woman to be fooled by pretty words and flattery.

And so the road trip across the vast plain began, with the first person to stop, a young man in a small cart. He told them he could take them to the nearest town and they accepted. As was Margarita's custom, she sat in the front of the car and was having a pleasant conversation until Adrian, that was the young man's name, offered them to smoke weed. She said no and his countenance changed completely, they hardly spoke until they got off at a gas pump.

The heat at that hour was very strong, the sun was shining like a bonfire and they were hungry. They sat down in the shade of a saman tree to eat what Mrs. Luisa had prepared for them and as they did so they watched a man who was filling the tank of his car. Apparently he was alone.

"Let's go over there and ask him", Margarita said and her friends followed her.

"Good morning sir, we wanted to know if you could give us a ride, we got stranded here because the car that was taking us there had an accident. How far do you go?"

The man turned to look at them, and answered very kindly that he was going to the capital and that he could give them a ride.

Ana stared with astonishment and fear at that face that did not inspire confidence in her, she did not understand how her friends kept talking to him. His gaze was baleful, his eyes dark black. He was tall and stooped and carried a cane in his left hand. His deep, husky voice seemed to come out of a cave. To her, he sounded like one of those ghosts from the legends of the plains she had read about .

She tried to warn her friends without the man noticing, but they didn't see it that way. They told her that the heat was making her hallucinate. That the man was beautiful and kind. They told her to stop being silly and to get in the car, because the man was waiting for them. There was no way Ana could change their minds. She did not know what to do, whether to abandon them or continue with them. In the end her sense of friendship got the better of her and she got into the car.

The car sped along a long and seemingly endless road. Ana saw through the rearview mirror the horrible grimace that was the man's smile as she listened to the cheerful conversation of her friends. The minutes passed and the sky grew darker and darker. We should have arrived by now, was Margarita's thought. And this road that never ends, it seems that we are in the same place. At that moment she realized that the conversations were repeated every so often as if it were a recording.

"I have to do something, what is happening is not normal. My God, help us get out of here". As he turned to talk to Zulay, she saw her face without any expression, he touched her shoulder and she fell to one side, as if she were a mannequin. She leaned over to talk to Margarita and saw her looking straight ahead, with no expression on her face, paralyzed and in the driver's seat the man was no longer there.

She started shouting and banging on the door, tried to open it and could not, the vehicle continued its course along the road until it was enveloped by a cloud of dust. At that moment it stopped and the doors opened.

Ana ran out without turning back.

She heard the voices of her friends and followed them until she reached the same place from where they had started. And there they were, waiting for her.

"But what happened to you Ana, why did you get into that vehicle, you left us worried and because you arrived so fast", Margarita had come up to where she was and hugged her.

Zulay looked at her very strangely.

"But I got in because you did too. I don't understand what happened". Ana was clutching her head in despair. "Please explain".

"We were talking with a man who was at the gas pump when we saw you walk straight to a car that was stopped on the road, we called you and you didn't listen to us. We saw you get in and the car started and not even ten minutes later you were already back". Zulay summed up what had happened. "And what happened when you left?"

"If I tell you what happened to me, you won't believe me, now it seems like a nightmare".

"Try it because we are shocked, let's go for a drink".

They went into the cafeteria and asked for water. An old man and his daughter were serving the place. The girls sat down and Ana began to tell them what had happened.

"Dad, did you hear what happened to those girls, it reminded me of the two young men who got lost in this area, they were never found. I wonder if something similar happened to them," said the young woman who was working in the cafeteria.

"Daughter, my father used to tell me that in these solitudes, the terror of the savannah searches for lost or disoriented souls, deceives them and they disappear. If that happened to that young woman, she must have had a very strong protection to make her leave. In these plains we must be very attentive and not believe in everything we see".
