—Yo no veo nada

—Hijo querido, estabas perdido, por fin has vuelto.

VERSION ENGLISH

In the seemingly quiet countryside, an extraordinary event was about to take place, never before seen by the inhabitants of that place. What was about to happen would be remembered for many years to come, and the story would be passed down from generation to generation, becoming a legend.

The morning began as it did every day, the sun rose in the east to illuminate the countryside, the houses, the people, the trees. The birds, as was their custom, began their song and the rooster did not wait long, for he was in charge of announcing the arrival of a new day, although it seemed that he had been delayed a little, he did not know why, but he sensed in the air that something strange was approaching.

Miguel had gotten up early to milk the cows, but they... had no milk in their udders. So he went home to tell his wife Carmelina. She was scratching her head, because no matter how hard she tried, she could not light the fire in the stove.

"That wood you brought me, it was kind of wet," she said to her husband Miguel, when she saw him come in.

"But it was dry, besides it hasn't rained these days, but what crazy things are happening in this town".

"Why don't you go to Antonio's house and ask him if he has any dry firewood?"

"You know very well that in this town people are not kind, they are selfish and do not like to help others".

A big breeze began to blow and darkened the atmosphere. Everything spun and spun, the houses, the animals, the people.

The boy Julian is pedaling his bicycle, distracted on the road. His father Miguel has sent him to buy some candles and matches. But when he arrives, he is surprised to see that the town has disappeared. He looks everywhere, for a moment he thought he had lost his way, but no. There are the mamon, avocado and mango trees. There in one corner is the saman tree with its branches outstretched.

As he looks up, he sees a big storm spinning... a hurricane and in the center, in the eye, the town is suspended. Everything looks very small.

Julian begins to cry, at ten years old, he doesn't know what he can do.

"And now how can I get there", he thinks, while thick tears run down his little face full of dirt. She sits down on a log to think.

A tall, stooped, gray-haired old man reaches him, still crying.

"Hello boy, what's the matter?"

"Look... up there, and he points to him with his hand".

"I see nothing but sky and clouds".

"Not there in the center of the hurricane, there is my village. My mother Carmelina and my father Miguel are also there in my house".

"I see nothing".

The disconsolate child cries even more.

"Come with me, you can't stay here alone, it's already getting dark".

"I can't leave, I have to help them".

"And what are you going to do?"

"Ask God to bring them down from there".

The old man smiles and says to her.

"Well, you can talk to God, but you don't have to be alone. I live nearby with my wife Mercedes and you can stay here to eat and sleep".

The boy let himself be convinced, he was already very hungry and tired.

At the old man's house, his wife was waiting for him at the door. He told her what had happened. She was very happy to receive the boy, as she felt very lonely since the death of her son Carlos.

In time, Julian got used to living with these kind people. The old man taught him many things, but there was one very important thing. Every morning he would accompany him to town with his load of fruits and vegetables that he harvested from his garden and distributed them to the needy. His wife made sweet papaya and guava jam for the abandoned elderly who lived in a group home. And he compensated with his love the loneliness of that house, which shone again with the joy of happiness.

Ten years have passed and Julian is now a young man. That morning he woke up as he did every day to help his grandparents, as he called them, and found them lying on their bed, holding hands. The old man called him.

"Julian, come... come closer, we want to say goodbye to you".

Julian ran to the bed and hugged them.

"Please don't leave me alone".

"You are not alone, son," said the old woman. "Go back to your village, it is time. You have made us very happy, and we thank you. But we must leave".

Julian left the house and followed the road to the village. There he found him. He ran to his house and there were his parents, a little older.
They hugged him.

"My dear son, you were lost, you are back at last. Where you were?", his mother couldn't stop crying.

He told them what had happened, and they listened in surprise.

From that day on, things in the village began to change. Julian and his parents started helping the needy, following the example of the elders.

What they were doing became known to other people, who decided to help as well. In time, everyone understood that kindness is an expression of love.
