Hispaliterario 7: No olvidar (ESP/ENG)

"Me van a matar y me van a quitar mis pequeños colmillos".

The Asian elephant is smaller than the African elephant and its tusks are not as big. Their ears are smaller, but they are still useful to scare away flies and mosquitoes that come to bother them and they are also very good ventilators to calm the heat.

Simon the elephant loves mangoes, and with his trunk he picks the ones that fall from the trees that abound in India, where he has lived for the last forty years. He had separated himself from the herd and only came closer when he sensed that the females were in heat. He was precisely distracted, grabbing the fruits with his trunk and putting them in his mouth when he fell into a trap of the hunters, a pit from which he could not get out no matter how hard he tried. The sun was oppressive and Simon was very hot and thirsty, his skin was wrinkling more than was normal for this one.

Hours passed and no one came to help him, his herd seemed to have forgotten him and it was logical that he no longer belonged to it. "I am already an old elephant and it is logical that I am going to die soon". He felt very sad and disappointed. But then he thought, "I still have a few years to live, I don't have to die, I have to get out of this place, I will not give up so easily, I can still go to the call of the females and fight with another younger than me, to be with them".

He heard the sound of human voices approaching and was scared out of his wits. They are going to kill me and take my little fangs. He crouched down as low as he could, but his large size didn't help him much. Three men approached the pit and saw him there, so fearful that one of them, the oldest, took pity on him and said to the others. "Let's help him out of that trap before the hunters come". They began to look for logs to throw into the pit so that the elephant could climb up them. Simon waited, not really knowing what was going on, he thought they would kill him when he got out. Humans are no good. But he was wrong... some are.

When they finished putting up the logs, they encouraged him to climb up them. They yelled at him, hit him with a stick on his back and one of them even dared to grab his ear. Simon decided to go up and trust them. When he did so, the men began to clap and shout, they seemed to be very happy.

image.pngfuente

Simon, still not understanding why they were helping him, ran as fast as his paws would allow him to run, but not without looking at each one of them to make sure he did not forget their faces. It is possible that at some point he would meet them again and be able to thank them for saving his life.

They say that the elephant's memory is prodigious and just as they can remember the one who has hurt them, they feel a great love for the one who does them good.
