The transformation (Eng/Esp)

We are on a mission to the cloud planet. I am Tela and this is my first time aboard the interstellar spacecraft. I feel scared and excited at the same time. We have been monitoring this strange planet for hundreds of years, and a century ago, something terrible happened. A large gray cloud covered it, but the gray cloud has been dissipating.

The researchers decided it was time to find out how the planet's surface was doing.

Upon reaching orbit, we broke through the atmosphere and landed on mountainous terrain near a lake.

"Ready to get out of the ship and do a reconnaissance."

The captain gives us the last instructions. We respect him a lot. His long beard is a symbol of his great experience. He is taller than the average height of the Mitus, which is 1.5 m. They are people from the highlands, whose skin and eye color are light and adapted to cold and low light.

Those from the lowlands, the Topus, where I come from, are on average half a meter tall, but we can jump up to 3 meters, and that is a great advantage; our skin and eyes are dark-colored. We are adapted to intense heat and light.

"Remember not to touch anything you see. You should only record it; we are not here to take samples".

We begin the trek by walking. The ground is arid, and the breeze stirs up the yellow dust. The instruments we are carrying show a temperature of 5°C. The air is breathable. The three moons are visible in the reddish sky.

"Let's split into ten groups of three. Use your air vehicles to move forward."

We deploy the vehicles that fit our bodies. They are light, and we ride comfortably seated. They glide over the surface of the terrain. I am in Cali's group my friend from the academy and Milo, an experienced scientist from Mitus.

Milo approaches us and says, "Let's go to that promontory; we can get a better look at what lies beyond. The instruments are registering some carbon activity."

Milo steps forward, and Cali approaches me and says.

"Stay close to me and remember what the captain told us".

"Why are you telling me that?", I ask, looking at his big black eyes and his raised eyebrows, which give him a very serious look. I know he wants to protect me, but sometimes it bothers me that he doesn't trust my ability to face danger.

"Because I know you and I know you are impulsive, and here you have to be very careful. It is an unknown world".

"Okay, Cali, but come on, we are falling behind; I don't see Milo anymore".

We accelerated the vehicles and reached the promontory. Milo was standing there, looking at something amazing.

Look at that, and he pointed at us with his long arm.

There were thousands of something's that looked like green rocks, but their surface was moving. They covered all the ground between the hills and the lake.

"They look like sea pickles!" I exclaimed.

"Yes, they do, but they are bigger. We have to search for them," Cali began to take out the instruments.

"Let's get a little closer; I want to see them up close. We need to collect good data. We can't do it from here".

Cali looked at me. I didn't agree, but Milo was the leader of the group. We closed the vehicles and continued walking. We went down the hill on a sandy path and began to hear a sound similar to a murmur, as if thousands of mouths were talking in a very low tone.

Milo motioned with her raised arm for us to stop.

The pickle-like organisms were close together, their surfaces rough with long appendages at the ends. Their color was not as green as we thought, but a silvery gray.

We heard a call signal. Cali touched her left ear and turned on the intercom.

I did the same, and the captain's voice came through loud and clear. "Be careful; we have detected aggression in some sea pickle-like organisms. Do not approach".

"We are very close to them, captain. They are occupying the whole valley up to the lake shore".

"You have to go back; just search them. Don't come any closer".

But Milo did not obey the captain's order and moved even closer.

Cali followed her and took her by the arm. "We must go back. It is an order from the captain".

"Sometimes you have to disobey; this is important for science. I need to know what they are saying".

"But we can go back later! We are not ready".

"Careful Cali! They're getting closer. Let's go soon".

A brown liquid began to gush from the appendages of the organisms. Could they be defending themselves from what they thought were invaders? The murmur increased in volume until it became a single scream.

"Cali, I'm getting dizzy!, I can't stand this sound!".

Cali tried to get Milo out of there, but she seemed to be hypnotized and resisted going back. She pushed him away and approached them.

The brown liquid touched her clothes and penetrated her skin. And we could see how Mali's body transformed into one of them. It was a very fast process; first, her skin turned gray, and then she lost his arms and legs and fell to the ground. She head and trunk melted. A complete change of organs, tissues and cells. And when she was one of them, the sound became a murmur again, and liquid began to ooze out of what was Mali now.

"Cali we have to go!. Let's activate the transport".

But Cali did not respond; he was also hypnotized by those strange beings.

I grabbed him by the arm, pulled him with all my strength, and started jumping to get away as fast as possible from that place.

When we left his area of influence, which was not much, Cali came to his senses.

"What happened!. How did you get me out of there?".

"Making use of our ability, I jumped with you in my arms so we could get away. And I'll tell you, you were quite heavy".

Cali looked at me with her big eyes, and this time she didn't have a frown and raised eyebrows as usual and had a proud smile on her face.

"Thank you, Tela; you saved my life".

"I couldn't bear to see you transformed into a pickle, and we'd better get away from here as soon as possible. We have to get to the ship and report what happened to Milo. In the end, her sacrifice for science was not in vain; we were able to record the whole process of her transformation".

Solo deben registrarlo, no vinimos a tomar muestras.

A big sacrifice indeed. Mali transformed into a pickle and the companions get to understand the process. Many scientific discovery followed a similar trajectory. Many people had paid the supreme price for the universe to be studied.

Your intelligence and imagination is totally astounding—sea pickles, no less. Wow!
Apart from the wonderful premise of your story, you create memorable characters that speak to the reader on their own terms. Very clever and very creative!

Imaginative take on the pickle prompt. Your opening paragraph has a good hook and lays out the mystery very clearly

I like this brief overview of the plot and setting without getting bogged down in to many technical details.

It's also good that after providing a high-level view, you zoom into the details until the eventual revelation of what's really going:

The brown liquid touched her clothes and penetrated her skin. And we could see how Mali's body transformed into one of them. It was a very fast process; first, her skin turned gray, and then she lost his arms and legs and fell to the ground. She head and trunk melted. A complete change of organs, tissues and cells. And when she was one of them, the sound became a murmur again, and liquid began to ooze out of what was Mali now.

Sounds yucky! This is an entertaining and well crafted story.

That's serious, I was paying close attention to every line, milo turned to pickle? Would that pickle be eatable? I'm just curious

jajaja I found your comment very funny 😂
The pickles turned her into one of them.
If you try to eat them you run the same risk as Milo.
Thank you very much @rare-gem and happy nigth ✨

Hahaha. I didn't see that as a sacrifice. She wasn't just careful and became the pickle's meal. Sometimes, scientists has to be extra careful on research like this
