A Beautiful Sublime Sunday - Birds in Flight...
On a previous post here I had shared about a Goosenado that happened at a pond I frequently visited. Well on my last visit there I once more witnessed a Goosenado but this time it was much larger and noisier with three huge flocks of geese continuing to pour into the pond.
Here is the video of it (excuse the bit of wind noise)-
And now on to some photos of those geese coming into the pond taken as the sun was just beginning to set so there was some interesting light. In fact it was the darkness that finally ended my photo shoot!

There were already some geese on the pond when the Gosenado happened but they were undeterred when the mass of geese ascended on them.

It was fun watching these big birds splash down...

There was wave after wave of these big birds coming in. Once they see other geese on a pond they know it is a safe spot and will come in. These geese had been coming in from the neighboring grain fields where they filled their bellies.

Coming in among the Canada geese was a lighter colored goose which may have been the speckled belly goose (although it was hard to tell with out seeing their bellies.)

The geese stayed on the pond for quite some time but as it approached darkness they started to lift off. I thought they would be there, on the safety of the water, for the evening but I guess not. I had moved my car up closer which might have made some of the geese nervous. They didn't fly off all at once but just a flock at a time until there were only a couple of geese left which were in among the ducks.
We had some pretty cold nights and there was ice starting to form on the water so perhaps the geese who were not with the ducks sensed this and left the pond. The ducks can sleep and keep one foot paddling to keep the water open, preventing it from freezing right up, so often you will see the geese stay with the ducks when it is freeze up.

I had taken lots more photos of the ducks and geese on the pond for it was a perfect photo opportunity! The day before I had come to get eggs and visited the pond which was alive with ducks and geese. Unfortunately the only camera I had with me was my camera on my cell phone which couldn't shot at the distance the ducks and geese were at. I was so disappointed that I had missed all those shots that I took a drive the next day and was so happy I did for I got an even more spectacular display of the pond! It sure had me appreciating my Canon PowerShot SX 60HS camera, one of the best investments I have made!
I limited this post to the photos with birds in flight and will share more of my photos with the ducks, geese and even a muskrat in another post, so stay tuned!
