Sublime Sunday - Rain has the Forest and Pond Area Teaming with Bird Life...

We had our first rain of the season and what a difference it made!
It's lovely to smell the moist air and the forest is becoming alive with a chorus of birds!

Flock of House Finches Sitting in the Cotton Wood Trees

The buds on the cottonwoods had opened looking like a pussy willow and the finches were feeding off them.

It is the finches you hear in the video below along with some wrens. They have quite a lovely song!

All sorts of birds are returning for this is the breeding area for many song birds.

We had dozens of dark eyed juncos this year which have been hanging around for quite some time and I have never seen such numbers before!

Right after the rain I stepped out to find the Juncos happily chirping away feeding under the bushes by the feeder, it was lovely to listen to!

Flocks of geese and cranes have returned and I've seen a number of pairs of ducks.

I had been hearing the cranes for quite some time then finally I was able to capture a few shots of them as they came to the open area which usually has water in it.

The crane felt challenged by the geese and the male put on quite a display jumping up in the air and flapping it's wings, defending it's area and mate.

There were flocks of geese coming to different areas around our place and I got a few good shots down by the pond which was had water on it from the melted snow.

Other birds we saw by the pond area were the red winged black bird, a cute American tree sparrow and flocks and flocks of robins!

Here you can hear it's lovely call -

It started out I saw one robin on top of the spruce tree, then I really began to think it was spring, then we had the rain and flocks of them started showing up. Now I truly know it's Spring and I'm so happy for it!

Another bird that I saw that I had never seen before and never saw again after the one sighting as a flock flew over and stopped for a bit on the poplar tree - the snow bunting. Doing some research to see what type of bird they were I found out that the snow bunting breed in the arctic and come down to the prairies for easy availability of food in the winter but they usually fly directly over the boreal forest where we live. I felt lucky to have caught these few photos!

The rain really brightened up the colors on the red osier dogwood and golden willows which we had planted to add some winter color.

The combination of the rain and the melting snow had the water running pretty good across our property and there was a spot right by a bright red osier dogwood that it sounded like a babbling brook. It kind of reminded me of a Japanese Zen garden with the sound of the water and the simple design of the red dogwood branches - what do you think?

You have no idea how lucky you were to get photos of snow buntings. We've tried for years to get one of the flock that comes down in winter to the farm where we get our milk, with zero success.

I just LOVE the burst of life you are having right now. So cool you get cranes too!

Ya I was surprized to see that they were snow buntings for we were on our walk and I just snapped a few shots thinking they were grosbeaks which we had quite a few of but when I got home and looked closer at the photo I realized it wasn't the grosbeaks but a bird I had never seen before and with a little research I saw it was the snow buntings and the reason I never saw them before is because they usually fly non-stop over the boreal forest area! Finally it really feels like Spring here! How is it up at your place?

It's very spring like here. My garlic is 16" high, the daffs are starting to go by and tulips to bloom. May 1, Friday, our 90 chicks arrive and my 5th seed starting is that day. Things are green on the ground, but not so much on the trees yet. It's surreal to be this far along at the end of April. This is usually mid May.

Fantastic bird photos! The photos of the house finches are wonderful and those snow bunting are gorgeous. How fun to have a visit from them! So many fabulous birds in your forest. Thanks for including the videos. It's great to hear them all! !tip

Thank-you for your kind comments and tip! I'm amazed at the number of house finches we are getting to the area and they just make the forest alive with their song! That and the number of Junos - both I had never seen flocks of them before and now it is numerous flocks! I do love the sound of the bird songs and try to capture it in video but often there is a bit of a wind that spoils the sound quality. Lovin' Spring and the birds!

I have had huge numbers of house finches in the past, but the past year or two I seldom see any and the Goldfinches have taken over. Looking out my window right now I can see a dozen Goldfinches sheltering from the rain in the lilac bush. They sing sweetly, too!

It's interesting the flux of different birds that find their way to different places. I wonder what causes them to change habitats like that? I love gold finches and would be happy to see some here!

I always love seeing and hearing birds come back to the trees after winter. My back yard often is filled with crows; at least, until I let the dog out. That's always so funny to watch.

We've had so many flocks of different birds - I just love hearing the bird chorus in the trees!
Our dog goes flying out the door chasing squirrels or rousing the birds. He does that when he is bored too - will start jumping at the birds in the feeder and in the bushes by the deck.
