At the upper edge, flanked by small circles, the legend "REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA", with the facial value "100 ESCUDOS" (100$00) in the exergue. The edge features a smooth circle followed by a roped circle.

An allegory composed of a Portuguese two-masted caravel sailing in calm waters at the mouth of a river. To the port side, the depiction of shores with vegetation; to the starboard side, near the edge, a cartographic representation of the mouth of the Gabia River, above which is the legend followed by the date in three lines: "RIO GAMBIA 1446". At the upper edge, the legend "NUNO TRISTÃO", and in the exergue, flanked by representations of the shores, the date "1987". Between the date and the edge, the initials of the National Printing House and Mint "INCM". To the right, next to the stern of the vessel, the signatures of the authors, "ISABEL C." (Isabel Carriço) to the left and "F. Branco" (Fernando Branco) to the right. The edge features a smooth circle followed by a roped circle.
