Visit Portugal - Porto City Park
Hi 👋

Sunday mornings in Porto have a particular rhythm when autumn arrives, and this one we spent exactly the way we love best: a long family walk through the Parque da Cidade. With 83 hectares of lakes, meadows and old trees stretching from Avenida da Boavista all the way to the Atlantic, it is the largest urban park in Portugal, and on a crisp October morning it felt like we had most of it to ourselves. Grab a coffee, put on comfortable shoes, and come walk it with us.

This little granite bridge, with its round stone spheres marking each end, is one of the park's quiet landmarks over the first lake we crossed. The design of the park dates back to a plan sketched in the 1960s by French architect Robert Auzelle and landscape architect Duarte Castel-Branco, later carried out by Sidónio Pardal when construction finally began in 1990. Granite, Porto's signature stone, shows up everywhere in the benches, walls and crossings like this one.

A few steps further and the path opens onto this perfectly round lake, its surface so still it mirrored the trees almost like glass. The park's lakes were shaped following landscape principles that echo 19th-century English park design, the kind associated with Humphry Repton, where water is used to open views and soften the density of the woods around it.

One of the things we love most about visiting in October is this: the plane trees lining the gravel paths start turning gold and amber, and the light filtering through them changes completely from the deep green of summer. We slowed down here just to listen to the leaves crunching underfoot.

Through this little gap in the trees the path spills out into one of the park's open meadows, bordered by a simple granite bench worn smooth by decades of visitors resting exactly where we did. These transitions between dense woodland and open lawn are deliberate, part of the original plan to vary the rhythm of the walk at every turn.

Further along the same lake, families had already claimed their spots on the grass for a picnic, which is exactly how most Porto locals treat this park, as an extension of their own backyard. We did not stay in my son's photos per the family's privacy wishes, but my wife and I lingered here a good while, just enjoying the blue October sky.

The park's largest lake came into view next, its granite steps leading right down to the waterline where small flocks of ducks paddled lazily between the reeds. Clouds had rolled in by this point, giving the whole scene a softer, more autumnal light than the bright blue of an hour before.

Around a quieter bend we found this pond almost entirely carpeted in duckweed, the tiny floating plant known in Portuguese as lentilha-de-água, with patches of arrowhead and other wetland plants breaking through the green. It is easy to forget how much biodiversity these calm corners of the park support, tucked away from the main paths.

We got closer to look at the pattern the duckweed made on the water, broken only by one small dark pool where the plants had not spread. The tall eucalyptus trees in the background are not native to Portugal, but they were planted widely across the country from the 19th century onward and have become part of the landscape most of us grew up with.

This cobblestone crossing framed by a dense corridor of trees felt like stepping into a different part of the park entirely, almost like a secret passage between two open spaces. Benches tucked into the shade here make it one of our favourite spots to pause halfway through the walk.

Further on, a long avenue of eucalyptus trees towers over the path, their peeling bark and silvery leaves catching the morning sun. A lone runner passing through gave a good sense of the scale of these trees, some of the tallest living things anywhere in the park.

We stopped at this trail map to figure out which loop to follow next. The park has four marked pedestrian routes, a 4.3 km red trail, a 1.9 km yellow trail, a 1.7 km blue trail, and a 400 m green running loop, which makes it easy to tailor the walk to however much time or energy you have on a given day.

Following the path along this long granite wall, we got our first glimpse of the park's sports facilities through the trees, with umbrella pines standing guard on both sides. These walls, built from large roughly cut blocks, are a recurring material throughout the park and give even the most functional corners a certain solidity.

Right next to the wall we found a proper sand volleyball court, tucked under a stand of maritime pines, with a couple of players already warming up despite the autumn chill. It is one of several free sports areas scattered through the park, alongside running tracks and fitness stations.

A short flight of stone steps, hemmed in by thick hedges on both sides, led us up and out of this shaded pocket of the park. Little details like this lamppost marked "E47" are part of a numbering system used across the park's paths, handy for anyone trying to meet up with friends in such a large green space.

Back among the plane trees, with a children's playground sign just visible in the distance, the gravel path curved gently through more autumn colour. Stretches like this one are why the park stays busy with joggers and dog walkers well into the evening, long after families like ours head home.

This wide, straight avenue under a canopy of eucalyptus gave us one last long, calm stretch before heading toward the sportier side of the park. Avenues like this one were planned to connect the different zones of the park in a single continuous walking experience, from quiet woodland to open lawns to the coast.

Near the edge of the sports area we came across this granite pillar, a type of monument known in Portugal as a padrão, standing quietly in the grass beside one of the park's stone walls. Markers like this one are easy to miss if you are not looking, but they are a reminder that this land had a history long before it became a public park in 1993.

Through the diamond mesh of the fence, one of the park's full-size artificial turf football pitches stretched out under the morning clouds, framed by tall pines on every side. Facilities like this one are free to use and are a big part of why the park feels less like a garden to admire and more like a place locals actually live their weekends in.

Our walk wound down along this last stretch, benches lined up under old oaks right beside the sports fence, the perfect spot to sit for a minute before heading back to the car. It felt like a fitting way to close the loop, sport and stillness side by side, just like the rest of the park.
By the time we made it back to the entrance, legs tired and my son thoroughly worn out from running ahead of us the whole way, we had barely covered a fraction of the park's 83 hectares. That is really the charm of the Parque da Cidade: no matter how many times we come back, there is always a path, a lake, or a corner we have not fully explored yet, and autumn only makes us want to come back sooner.
