Visit Spain - Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias

On our latest family trip, we decided to cross the border into Spain and spend an afternoon in Valencia, at one of the most striking architectural complexes in Europe: the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias (City of Arts and Sciences). My wife, our child, and I only had time to explore the outdoor areas, without stepping inside any of the museums, but it still turned out to be one of the most memorable stops of the whole trip.

Na nossa última viagem em família, decidimos atravessar a fronteira para Espanha e passar uma tarde em Valência, num dos complexos arquitetónicos mais impressionantes da Europa: a Cidade das Artes e das Ciências. A minha mulher, o nosso filho e eu só tivemos tempo para explorar as áreas exteriores, sem entrar em nenhum dos museus, mas mesmo assim acabou por ser uma das paragens mais memoráveis ​​de toda a viagem.

We had seen photos of the complex online for years before finally making the trip, and I'll admit I was a little worried it might be one of those places that looks better in pictures than in person. It isn't. If anything, walking around it in person gives you a much better sense of scale than any photo does, the buildings are enormous, and having water running alongside almost every path changes how the whole place feels compared to a normal city square.

Há anos que víamos fotos do complexo online antes de finalmente fazermos a viagem, e admito que estava um pouco preocupado que pudesse ser um daqueles lugares que fica melhor nas fotos do que pessoalmente. Não é. Na verdade, caminhar pessoalmente dá-lhe uma noção de escala muito melhor do que qualquer foto, os edifícios são enormes e ter água a correr ao longo de quase todos os caminhos muda a sensação de todo o lugar em comparação com uma praça normal da cidade.

Designed mainly by architect Santiago Calatrava, with the science museum by Félix Candela, the complex sits in the old riverbed of the Turia river, which was diverted after a serious flood decades ago and turned into a long park that now runs through the city instead of a road or a waterway. Rather than filling that space with ordinary buildings, Valencia used it to build something closer to a science-fiction film set: bright white curves, sharp angles, and long reflecting pools that double every structure on the water's surface.

Projetado principalmente pelo arquiteto Santiago Calatrava, com o museu de ciência assinado por Félix Candela, o complexo ocupa o antigo leito do rio Turia, que foi desviado após uma grave inundação há décadas e transformado num extenso parque que agora atravessa a cidade, substituindo uma estrada ou um canal. Em vez de preencher este espaço com edifícios comuns, Valência utilizou-o para construir algo mais próximo de um cenário de um filme de ficção científica: curvas brancas e brilhantes, ângulos agudos e longos espelhos de água que duplicam cada estrutura à superfície da água.

Even without a ticket for any of the attractions, just walking around is an experience in itself. There's very little shade in the middle of the day, so if you're planning your own visit, late afternoon is a much more comfortable time to go, and the light does far more interesting things with the white concrete as the sun gets lower.

Mesmo sem bilhete para nenhuma das atrações, simplesmente passear por lá é uma experiência por si só. Há pouca sombra a meio do dia, por isso, se estiver a planear a sua visita, o final da tarde é um momento muito mais agradável, e a luz cria efeitos muito mais interessantes no betão branco à medida que o sol se põe.

We didn't buy tickets for the museums or the aquarium this time, and honestly, the outdoor space alone justified the stop. It's free to walk around, there's plenty of open plaza and a few shaded spots, and the whole area is very manageable with a child, no queues, no rushing between exhibits, no worrying about nap times or attention spans. The reflections in the pools change completely depending on the time of day, calm and mirror-like in the early evening, choppier and more textured when there's a bit of wind, and it's an easy place to spend an hour or two just walking, taking photos, and letting the kids run around the open spaces without much to bump into.

Desta vez, não comprámos bilhetes para os museus nem para o aquário e, sinceramente, só o espaço exterior justificou a visita. A entrada é gratuita, há bastante praça aberta e alguns lugares com sombra, e toda a área é muito tranquila para quem está com crianças: sem filas, sem correrias entre exposições, sem se preocupar com a hora da sesta ou com a atenção da criança. Os reflexos nos lagos mudam completamente consoante a hora do dia: calmos e espelhados ao início da noite, mais agitados e com mais textura quando está um pouco vento. É um local perfeito para passar uma ou duas horas a caminhar, a tirar fotografias e a deixar as crianças correr pelos espaços abertos sem muitos obstáculos.

It's also, unsurprisingly, one of the more popular spots in Valencia for exactly this kind of visit. We saw plenty of other families doing the same thing we were, walking the perimeter, taking photos by the pools, without any ticket in hand. If you're travelling on a tighter budget, or simply short on time the way we were, it's genuinely one of those rare cases where seeing "just the outside" doesn't feel like settling for less.

Não é surpresa que seja também um dos locais mais populares de Valência para este tipo de visitas. Vimos muitas outras famílias a fazer o mesmo que nós: a percorrer o perímetro, a tirar fotografias nas piscinas, sem qualquer bilhete em mãos. Se estiver a viajar com um orçamento mais apertado ou simplesmente com pouco tempo, como nós, é realmente um daqueles raros casos em que ver "apenas a parte exterior" não dá a sensação de estar a contentar-se com menos.

The complex is easy to reach on foot from the historic centre of Valencia, following the old riverbed park most of the way, which is a pleasant walk in its own right, with cyclists, joggers, and other families making use of the green space. There's also a metro stop close by if you'd rather skip the walk. Once inside the complex, everything is connected by wide pedestrian paths, so even with a stroller it was straightforward to move between the different buildings.

O complexo é facilmente acessível a pé a partir do centro histórico de Valência, seguindo a maior parte do caminho pelo antigo parque do leito do rio, o que é um passeio agradável por si só, com ciclistas, corredores e outras famílias que utilizam o espaço verde. Há também uma estação de metro por perto, se preferir saltar a caminhada. Uma vez dentro do complexo, tudo está ligado por amplos caminhos pedonais, pelo que mesmo com um carrinho de bebé era fácil deslocar-se entre os diferentes edifícios.

Definitely, and next time with tickets for the Oceanogràfic, since that seems to be the part our child would enjoy most. But even as an outside-only visit, the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias is one of the most photogenic and family-friendly stops we've made in Spain, and well worth the detour if you're passing through Valencia, even for just an afternoon.

Com certeza, e da próxima vez com bilhetes para o Oceanogràfic, já que parece ser a parte que o nosso filho mais gostaria. Mas mesmo que seja apenas uma visita exterior, a Cidade das Artes e das Ciências é um dos locais mais fotogénicos e ideais para famílias que visitámos em Espanha, e vale muito a pena o desvio se estiver de passagem por Valência, mesmo que seja apenas por uma tarde.
