My BATTLE MAGE SECRET Weekly Challenge! Equal Opportunity

Hello there, this is my entry to the new "Battle Mage Secret Weekly Challenge!". If you want to participate or know more about the challenge, click here. This week we have to formulate a strategy with the Equalizer ruleset.

RULESET: Equal Opportunity

With the Equal Opportunity ruleset, all units receive the 'Opportunity' ability at the start of the game.

Opportunity ability allows units to hit the lower health units from the enemy team.

The Equal Opportunity ruleset is very simple and easy to understand as all monsters get the Opportunity ability which strikes the enemy monsters with the lowest health. So the order of the cards is not as important in this ruleset.

When this ruleset comes with a low mana cap then we can use very low mana-costing cards with low health and should try to fill all the slots so we waste as many attacks from opponents as possible.

Let's see how this ruleset affects my lineup and how I strategies for the following battle. But first, let's focus on my lineup in detail.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Obsidian
Position 1
Unicorn Mustang
Position 2
Oaken Behemoth
Position 3
Regal Peryton
Position 4
Goblin Psychic
Position 5
Magi of Chaos
Position 6
Mycelic Slipspawn

This was a whopping 50 mana cap battle and it had 2 interesting rulesets:

  • Equal Opportunity - All monsters have the Opportunity ability.

  • Armored Up - All monsters have 2 armour in addition to their normal armour stat.

All elements were active except Water. The 50 mana cost and almost all elements being active made me choose my lineup freely and I went for the earth element.

I used the Obsidian as my summoner who gave all my mages +1 magic attack.

I used the Unicorn Mustang as my tank. It costs 8 mana but comes with the 'Void' ability which was very useful during this battle as I was expecting magic attacks from my opponents as well. It dealt 2 magic damage as well and comes with good speed. Hence, this was a perfect choice for my tank.

Oaken Behemoth was placed in the second position as it deals with heavy magic and melee attacks. A multi-attack type unit is sometimes very helpful and since it was a 50 mana battle I could use it easily. This one comes with Void armour and Knock out abilities with great health. So, it can be used as a supplementary tank.

Next was the Regal Peryton. It also deals 2 magic damage and comes with incredible speed. It also has the 'Flying' ability so expect a lot of misses against melee and ranged attackers. It only costs 5 mana and is a very useful unit in this lineup.

In the fourth position, I used the Goblin Psychic. It was yet another mage that deals 2 magic damage and comes with the 'Tank Heal' ability so that my two strong units at the front can last even longer. Its health is relatively lower and it might become the target and get eliminated early. It also has the 'affliction' ability which comes very handy during the battle.

In the next position, I placed the Magi of Chaos. It was another heavy attacker dealing 3 magic damage. But this one comes with no other abilities. I used it only for its attacking strength and it worked perfectly as well.

Last but not least was Mycelic Slipspawn, another mage that dealt 2 magic damage on its own. This one comes with a 'taunt' ability that makes enemy monsters target it first. I used it to protect my Goblin Psychic mainly. This unit came with 11 hp on its own and too a few hits to be eliminated.

Now that my lineup was set let's talk about my strategy for this game.

My Strategy

As this was a 50 mana cap battle and had a couple of unrestrictive rules with almost every element being active. I went with the magic damage. I used heavy magic damage to take down my opponent quickly.

I was expecting a magic attack as well so I used the Unicorn Mustang and Oaken Benemoth as my tanks. If the game comes down to only these two then I would have a better chance against magic attackers.

I also tried to shield my weaker units like Goblin Psychic by using a monster with a 'taunt' ability.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube. Battle Link

My Opponent went with a similar strategy and they even went with two units who had the 'taunt' ability. This was a good strategy to apply with the Equal Opportunity ruleset. But their units were low-level and couldn't survive for long.

I like the planning from my opponents but it didn't work out at the end. My heavy damage got easily eliminated both of their units with the 'taunt' ability. By the start of round 3, all the strong units were eliminated and it was an easy win at the end.

Conclusion

Equal Opportunity is an interesting ruleset which opens up a lot of strategies, one strategy could be to use a weaker unit with 'Martyr' ability and it will benefit your units adjacent to that card when it dies.

Since this battle had +2 armour as well. We both went with a heavy magic attack instead.

Magic damage is a great way to deal with these high-health units. Getting some healing units or monsters that recharge their health be it with a 'life leech' ability or 'scavenger' ability is very useful during this ruleset.

This ruleset gives rise to some interesting compositions. Let me know in the comments whether you like this ruleset and what strategy you adopt during your battle.
