My BATTLE MAGE SECRET Weekly Challenge! Equalizer

avatar

Hello there, this is my entry to the latest "Battle Mage Secret Weekly Challenge!". If you want to participate or learn more about the challenge, click here. This week we have to formulate a strategy with the Equalizer ruleset.

RULESET: Equalizer

With the Equalizer ruleset in action, all units start with the same health which is based on the highest health monster of either team.

This ruleset is simple and easy to understand as all the monsters will have the same health when they start the battle. It will be the health of the monster with the highest original health. So, those units with high attacking strength are preferred over units with high health as spending mana on health will be redundant in this ruleset.

Let's see how this ruleset affects my lineup and how I strategies for the following battle.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Ilthain
Position 1
Nalara Geinek
Position 2
Chaos Agent
Position 3
Meriput Magician
Position 4
Prismologist
Position 5
Djinn Renova
Position 6
Pelacor Arbalest

It was just a 40-mana cap battle and had only an 'equalizer' ruleset which as we already saw will make all the units start with the same base health.

All the elements were active during this battle. I had 40 mana to work with so I could afford to use expensive units and likewise my opponent could too so I wanted to use a summoner which counters heavy attacking strength and what better than giving the damage back to the monsters who try to hurt us? Ilthian was my choice for this reason as it gave the 'return fire' ability to all the units.

I used the Nalara Geinek as my tank which costs 9 mana and deals only 1 magic attack damage. It comes with 3 extra armour but the most vital part of its stats for me was its 'amplify' ability which increases the return fire damage received by my opponent.

Next in my lineup was Chaos Agent which costs only 1 mana and comes with the 'Dodge' ability which helps it to dodge more attacks. Having costs just 1 mana and still getting a good health boost is always a good strategy in this ruleset.

Meripur Magician was the next monster that I placed in my lineup. It was another magic attacker who costs just 5 mana and has decent base speed. But I didn't use it just for those, I used it to utilize its 'tank heal' ability which supports my tank with the crucial heal.

In the fourth position, I placed the Prismologist which is a strong range attacker. It costs 8 mana and deals heavy range attack damage with 'Blast' that can take out even the strongest of defences.

In the fifth position, I placed the Djinn Renova. It is a powerful magic attacker which comes with a 'Strengthen' ability that increases the health of all friendly by 1. All this cost just 7 mana.

Last but not least was Pelacor Arablest. It costs 6 mana and deals 2 ranged attack damage but it has the 'double strike' ability so it attacks twice per round. It has relatively lower health but it doesn't matter in this ruleset so this is perfect for it.

Now that my lineup was set, it was time for battle.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

My Strategy

Since this was a 40 mana battle with not a restrictive lineup, I could use any strategy. I was expecting my opponent to use a few ranged attackers as they pack a good punch and are good attacking options. So, I used the Ilthian which gave the 'return fire' ability to all my monsters and if my opponent used range attack it would punish them with the return damage. Not only that, I used a unit with 'Amplify' ability which increased that return damage even more.

Apart from this, having units with 'double strike' or healing abilities helps a lot in this lineup and that's exactly what I did during this battle too. Having extra armour on your tank and supporting it with armour is very effective!

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me a comfortable win at the end.

My opponent went with the heavy ranged attacking option as they even used summoner which increased their ranged attack damage. But I was expecting some ranged attackers and used the Ilthian which was used to counter all the ranged attackers.

They had a stronger tank, Dumack Orc, with a 'shield' ability that helped it last the first round while my tank got a bit of a beating in the first round and was finally eliminated at the start of the second round. But the return ability on it weakened their ranged attackers a lot.

Their tank got eliminated at the start of the next round and all the ranged attackers were weak too after receiving return attack damage for a few rounds now.

The next couple of rounds were bad for my opponent as they lost a couple of important attackers while I was just a non-attacking unit and now I had a massive advantage and a lot more attacking strength. The Time Mage tried to hold on for a bit but it was too little too late!

Conclusion

As you saw in the above battle, having attacking strength and ways to counter your opponent's aggression is important during the 'Equalizer' ruleset as you won't have to focus much on your health. It will anyway be increased with the maximum base health of the monster from either side. Having strong tanks and protecting them with extra armour along with supporting them with healing is a good strategy that should be implemented during this ruleset.

Let me know what are your strategies against this ruleset.
