Testing some strategies with Runemancer Atuat

Hello guys, this is my entry to the "Splinterlands Social Media Challenge!". If you want to participate and read more about the challenge, click here.

The Rebellion edition is the latest edition of cards in Splinterlands and there are a lot of new summoners and monsters which came out with this one. Each week I focus on different monsters and talk about them in detail with strategies that best fit them. This week, we have a legendary Earth unit, Runemancer Atuat, a power mage attacker with good overall stats. It has some amazing abilities special at higher card levels.

Let's start by looking at its stats in detail.

Runemancer Atuat is a Legendary life unit is a high mana cost unit costing 9 mana to use but it comes with some impressive stats to justify this huge cost. It deals 2 magic attack damage and the defensive capabilities are good. Having 9 health and 3 armour at level 2 is not bad at all. It comes with a few useful abilities as well. Its 'headwinds' reduce the ranged attack of all enemy monsters by 1. Also, its "Forcefield" ability allows it to last even longer against units with extremely high attacking power.

Let me show you how it performs using a battle as an example.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Ilthain
Position 1
Time Meddler
Position 2
Captain Katie
Position 3
Pelacor Arbalest
Position 4
Zyriel
Position 5
Prismologist

It was a 55-mana cap battle and had the following rulesets:

  • Aim True - Attacks always hit their target.
  • Keep Your Distance - Monsters with Melee attack may not be used in battles
  • Tis but Scratches - All Monsters have the Cripple ability.

All elements except 'Water' were active during this battle. I went with Ilthian as my summoner which increased the speed of all the friendly units by 1 and gave the 'return fire' ability to all the units.

My tank in this battle was Runemancer Atluat (no surprises here). It is an impressive unit as we already discussed. Its powerful magic attacks and great defensive stats along with 'headwinds' and 'forcefield' abilities make it a perfect tank in my lineup.

Next in my lineup was Time Meddler. It was another mage that had a lot of health and an interesting ability, dodge, which made it miss more attacks. Both of these units made my front line stronger.

Captain Katie was placed in the third position, which cost 7 mana and was a gladiator unit. It also dealt heavy magic attack damage and with 'snipe' ability it can be very useful in eliminating units which are hiding behind beefy units.

The next one was Pelacor Arablast, a ranged attacker which strikes twice each round because of its 'double strike' ability. It also comes with good health and all this costs just 6 mana which I could easily afford in this battle.

Zyriel was the next unit in my lineup. It costs 7 mana and comes with weapon training and a 'life leech' ability. This makes it last much longer and while it is there and standing it deals 4 ranged attack damage which is quite impressive.

Last but not least was Prismologist. It was another impressive unit costing 8 mana and dealing 4 ranged attack damage with 'blast' which is so powerful and can change the fate of the game on its own. It also comes with 2 armour of its own.

Now that my lineup was set, it was time for battle.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

My Strategy

My strategy for this battle was highly influenced by the rulesets provided for this battle. As melee attackers were unavailable in this battle. It was also better to get a strategy to counter ranged or magic attackers or both. I chose to counter ranged attackers and that's why I used Ilthain as my summoner which gave the 'return fire' ability to all my units.

My tank, Runemancer Atuat, played a vital role in this strategy as it has a 'headwinds' ability which reduced the ranged attack damage by 1.

I used heavy ranged attack damage of my own to overwhelm my opponent and take them down quickly. Ranged attackers packs a good punch so I used three of them in my lineup, even though they didn't have much defensive skills. But I was more confident on my front line to stay alive longer so the ranged attackers wouldn't have to come at the front.

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me a comfortable win in the end.

My opponent went through heavy magic attack damage as they used mostly mages and increased their magic attacks by 1 as they used the Obsidian as their summoner. They still used a couple of range attackers.

Their tank got defeated after taking so many attacks from my units. It didn't even last until the end of round 1 and another unit followed it immediately. My Runemancer Ataut took a lot of beating too and right before the end of the first round, it was defeated too.

I still had units with good defensive capabilities and one of them was now my tank but my opponent was running out of units with good health and round 2 saw the demise of their Regal Peryton.

Soon, their last hope, the Goblin Psychic followed the Peryton and it was almost all over for my opponent.

Once their ranged attack came in the front of the lineup it was all over and it took just three rounds for my strong attacking unit to take them out. In the end, I registered an easy win in this brawl battle.

Conclusion

Runemancer Atuat played a crucial role in my lineup, not only does it increase the attacking strength of your lineup by dealing heavy magic attack damage, but it also adds massively to the defensive strength as it comes with extra armour of its own and a huge health. Also, its ability makes your opponent's ranged attacker's strength less and can be a powerful weapon against opponents spamming ranged attackers. It comes with 9 mana so sometimes it is hard to place it in your lineup, especially when it is just small map cap battles but in the high mana cap battles it shines very well.

I recommend it. Let me know if you find it useful as well.
