Savings

I probably will never understand people who spend with no plans of saving. The moment they come in contact with any money, they lavish it on the most stupid things without even thinking of how tomorrow is going to be. Most of them always console themselves with the "Tomorrow will take care of itself" quote after foolishly spending on things they don't even need.

I remember when I was a kid, my dad had promised to give me a gift if I saved my first one thousand naira. It was a Walkman CD player and all of the big boys back then had one so I was so excited to get one too. I remember trying my very best to make sure I saved at least once a day. Whenever I was given any pocket money, I would split it into two, one for savings and the other for enjoyment lol.

I did this for more than a month and when it finally got to one thousand naira, I had immediately showed all of it to my dad. Back then, I had no idea what character my father was trying to instill in me but now that I'm grown and I see men my age complaining about being broke because of how they spend their money lavishly, I always say a silent prayer in my heart, thanking God that my father did what he did those many years ago.

Saving is a character that everyone must develop because it helps bring us out of some unforseen situations that we may find ourselves in the future.

Imagine living in a country like mine where you can be arrested anytime any day for the most stupid of crimes and the only way you can avoid spending the night in the police cell is by bailing yourself out with money of course. If you happen to have some savings, you will be walking home a free man the next minute but if you don't, you might end up spending many nights in a police cell.

I know using the police as an example for something like this is a little bit weird but unfortunately this is how it is over here and it's a very bad thing. Nevertheless, always remember, a penny saved is a penny earned.

With today's global conditions, let alone saving, for daily basic needs, many people cannot fulfill them (in my area)
