Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg, Herr ich habe misgehandelt | Secrets of Organ Playing Challenge, Week 147

Last week I already wrote a bit about Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg (1718 – 1795), a German music critic, music theorist and composer. Marpurg published two collections of chorale preludes during his live and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek provides digital copies of these two collections of chorale preludes. As they are largely notated in older (c-) clefs, they are not easily accesible for players nowadays. So I decided to create a modern, free, edition of Marpurg's organ works.

The first collection contains 21 chorale preludes. I've recorded all of them in the last week, save the last one. And this last one is the chorale prelude to the choral "Herr, ich habe misgehandelt". It has the chorale melody in long notes in the pedals. The hands play a three part accompaniment.

It's actually quite a tricky piece to play. It took me more than two hours before I had a recording I am more or less satisfied with. I kept making little mistakes, each time in a different spot in the piece. Rather frustrating.

Anyway, here it is. The recording was done with the Hauptwerk software and the sampleset, made by Sonus Paradisi, of the Schnittger organ in the St. Martini-kerk, Groningen (https://www.sonusparadisi.cz/en/organs/netherlands/groningen-st-martini.html).

Probably next week I'll play somethig from the second collection. And when all recordings are complete I'll start publishing the scores.
