Are you adding value?

I was reading a novel sometime last week when I got to the part where it says, "It depends on the value you bring when you are around. If you add value, while you are away, your coworkers will keep saying or thinking 'If only he or she were around, then you'll be fine." I went on reading and met another part that struck my heart, it says: "It is important to be deliberate about everything you do, so always putting in your best is a sure-fire strategy to remaining relevant."

One habit of mine is that when I am reading, I try to fix myself into it, perhaps I might find something that resonates with me, and yes, it was something I got from this book.

I am a teacher and I devote my full attention and focus to teaching. I never for once try to lie about my absence at work if I need to. I realize that as a teacher, you shouldn't be found taking different excuses for not being in school because the students need teachers to be around. One thing I never try to do is to be absent from my work but to be fully present while maintaining my relevance in what I do. I am always deliberate about everything unless I do not have an interest in it.

One thing about life is that every human can be replaced anytime and when you least expect it. When as an employee, you keep going off from work which you do continuously, a time will come that you won't matter to your company anymore as you have given them the impression to look for someone who would replace you someday, and when you resume, you will be shocked to see a new person occupying your seat. You have created the impression that you aren't trustworthy, and then you lost your job.

It is important to be deliberate in whatever you do, both online and offline so you don't make people fill someone in your space, making you feel irrelevant in your job. It is normal to give excuses if you need to take a break from work, if you must do so, add maximum value the rest of the time you are available so that you are missed while you are away.

It is easier to get someone to replace you as soon as possible, but be sure to create that tight space where even your employer would think twice about replacing you when you are just away on any kind of break.

I value my teaching job that I try to be available at all times while trying my best to add value to what I do, which is why I take things so deliberately and intentionally. Most people will say, is it more than this job? how much are you getting from it? It is not about these questions, but my value and my input are what matters so that at the end of the day, when I am no longer there, I will be missed, and that is because of how I add importance to what I love doing.
