Do you consider yourself a wise spender?

I was raised in a family that was constantly plagued by financial difficulties and because of this, I learned how to discipline myself in spending as I got to imbibe this act from my parent, especially my mom because she was an avid trader who ventures in all kinds of trades just to provide for the family. Because of this, she was so wired in the act of savings that she was always cautious and careful with the way she spends. Her business life was what my younger sister took from her and she is so learned when it comes to financial issues.

I started growing up to become a "scrooge"don't worry, you will get to understand what I mean below. As young as I was then, I held money in high regard as it gave me a sense of security up to this moment.

When it comes to spending, we have different ways and habits to it and these are shaped by our personalities, the values we subscribed to and how we are brought up. The way a rich man's daughter would spend lavishly is different from how an average man's daughter would, and it is necessary we understand that everything isn't about money alone but who we are when it comes to how we spend.

What type of spender are you?

I have come to realize that there are ways we can spend our money wisely and work our way to financial freedom and I am glad to share with you where I belong to.

Are you a generous giver? Do you give out what you have? I noticed that givers, I mean the true and cheerful ones love to bless others with their money. They love to put smiles on people's faces when they give.

I learnt this from my Dad especially. While growing up, I watch my Dad gives his last penny to people and I would always see him happy doing that. I got to see how people love and want to be around him because of this act. I started growing up to become a giver too. Not just a giver, but one who would happily give from her heart because it gives me joy knowing I am blessing others with what I have.

Givers never lack! This is so true because I am a living testimony to this. I come to understand that whatever I have isn't for me alone and this is why we would always have the poor (those who can´t afford it) among us. Thank God Jesus said this. I consider someone who gives from his or her heart a wise spender because every good deed you do comes back to you in multiple folds. If you aren't doing this much, I would advise you to start giving out of what you have because it is what I have come to enjoy. Giving brings joy to you likewise putting smiles on other people.

Tip: Just because you are a generous giver doesn't mean you should give all to people. You should know when to give and not to give so you can have something left to spend and save too.

Yes, this is where I fall in when it comes to spending wisely. Right from time, I have always been calculative of how I spend my money. I said the other time that I have an app that helps me track my spending and no matter how little an item is, I input them down. Some people even tagged me as being stingy just because I am extremely careful when it comes to spending and always calculate whatever I buy to the least amount. My motto in spending is that "every cent counts", and that is the truth about a scrooge like me. I make sure to plan and list every item I need to buy and once I get them, I don't forget to input them into my app.

Just a snippet of my spending last month.

How do you expect a scrooge like me to fall into this category? If you are on this list, then know that you might not really be a wise spender. Those who fall into this category are the ones who spend their money impulsively. They buy everything they see and they are also a target for vendors who sells products because they know whatever amount they call for them, they don't beat the price down or negotiate. In fact, they can be lured by advertisers when there is a discount and they are also driven by wants rather than needs.

Though, they know how to enjoy their lives and attend all kinds of parties, their money easily runs dry and at the end of the month, they don't seem to understand how and where their money went to. They eventually end up not saving at all. This is a bad habit of spending.

I have a friend in this category and I love her for that. She doesn't spend her money but would carefully weigh the risk and benefits before she spends. Most times, she seeks advice from me on what to buy and asks if it is worth throwing her money into it. I can say people in this category are wiser because they don't just go for anything, especially things in vogue or trending. They watch out for any possibility of benefits they would derive and the risks in it so as to back out quickly.

I can say this set of people knows much about finance and would gladly be someone to meet for advice as they tend to not waste their money but use it for the best purpose.

Now, which category are you in? It is important to check yourself and see if you are a truly wise spender or not and work towards making an adjustment before it is too late. We all want to live a better life and have financial security. I hope this article helps too.

I love that category you are in and we must definitely enjoy our lives because we only live once, but at the same time, we must apply wisdom too for the future. It´s so important we do that. While you eat that shawarma, dey think about the future too 😂😂😂

Spending wisely is good as it helps one spend on things that are needed and pressing. Many spend their money wants and the needs are left undone.

Thanks for sharing

Yes, many spend based on what they want and not what they need. Thank you for reading.

From the list, I think you're more of a person who knows the value of money than a scrooge. Scrooges can never be generous givers. Your upbringing, although laced with financial difficulties has shaped you into who you are today and that's a good thing. I flunctuafd between being a shrewd spender and a spendthrift. Sometimes I wonder where all my money have gone and sometimes I save up, depending on the situation. My elder brother taught me this art:

  • for every earning you make, spend 60% and save 40%. As I started reaping the benefits of saving money no one told me to spend only 40% and save 60%. Being frugal with money is a good thing.

Scrooges can never be generous givers.

Going by the definition of a scrooge, then I am more than that since you assume those people cannot be generous givers. I believe it now depends on the individual to want to be generous in giving. It also goes with other types of spenders because I would want to believe that doesn´t stop an individual from blessing others with what he or she has.

What your brother taught you was the best as you will look back to enjoy the progress.

Thank you for sharing your thought on this topic.

Well, the literal definition of scrooge stated otherwise. Well, I guess it depends on the kind of individual as you have said. I believe frugal is a more fitting word.

Yeah, I really learned a lot from that experience with my brother. Your articel just gave me an idea on what to write today as I have just drafted a story on how I transformed from a spendthrift to a person who saves. I will do well to mention you in my article as an honor.

Your blog was enlightening. Thanks! 😊

The things is. To spend wisely, take myself for example, through out this year I haven't gotten a single dress for myself, though I got some for the kids , since they are still growing, but I didn't get for myself not thatttt i wasnt given the money, no but because I had to save for school, which I knew was important, but along the way came unforeseen circumstances, I had to take care of my health , so I had to touch that savings, if I didn't save, at that crucial moment, when hobby didn't have cash, I wouldn't have been able to treat myself at the hospitallll, maybe. I would have died of bleeding by now.
So it's always good to save no mater what.

I love this post so much. Share the name of the app with me.

Wow this is one of the best posts I've stumbled through today. To be candid, i learnt alot from this and i must confess that you're a very wise woman. One good thing you added after your first paragraph is an expression full of wisdom. Though we give liberally but we're to do that with wisdom as well in order for one to be left with something at hand.

I've fallen a victim of given virtually all i have with the principal believe that it'll be replenished. I understood what that theory meant when life done so hard on me. Eversince then i make sure i give but prudently. Thank you for this wonderful post friend. It's very motivating, educating and ethical.

More grease to your elbow my friend 👍@princessbusayo

We just need to be wise in our generosity to people because you can´t give all with you having nothing left for yourself at the end of the day. I really appreciate your time reading too. I am so honored. Thank you 👍

Those are some great thoughts you are sharing. I think it is important to be careful with your money. Giving to others is also good in some situations, but sometimes it can continue people in bad habits with money.

Your article reminds me of the quote from Charles Dickens: "Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen nineteen and six , result happiness."

Yes, money is just like a spirit that varnishes quickly if we aren´t careful in spending. One has to learn how money works and the way to manage to spend for our needs. Thank you for your comment.

Brilliant, the truth is I've been in all of the above categories except for the one you are in, lolz, I can't see myself writing down everything I buy or use money for, it's just so tiring just thinking of it, hehe.

Well, I'm the number one more than any other, I want to make money so I can be of help to people who are in need and also to assist myself. And somehow the last one still goes well with me because I find it hard to purchase anything because I feel like there are other important things I can use that money for.

Thank you so much for giving us an idea of the type of spender we are, dreemport brought me here to learn, hehe.

Indeed, Dreemport brought you here to learn and you left such an amazing comment too. 😍
At first, it was difficult penning down everything I purchase but as time goes on, I became used to it since it´s on my phone and I just need to open the app and do what I need to do, then close it back.

One thing that is making me work hard too is to have and help those who are in need and this can´t be only about money but things we can share with them which would benefit them. Thank you so much, Hope.

Yes oo, I'm happy she brought me here, hehehe, I got to learn something.

Yeah, since it's an app it might not be so hard after all, hehe.

Of course, money is not the only way to assist people and I even prefer assisting others outside money but then it's a great privilege to be able to do both.

You're welcome dear, I'm grateful to you too ❤️

One thing I can say about Givers is that, it's not just about giving out financial aids or money to people. When you give out ideas, helping hands and anything possible... it also counts.

Having a giving heart transcends beyond finance. However, when there is or there isn't much finances, the one who has the same heart will give out much.

Back then I was teaching people musical instruments free via WhatsApp... people will be sending me recharge card up and down.

I thought someone one time and he dashed me a guitar.... the one I use till today. Someone gave me saxophone (although it's no more), another person gave me a small speaker....

So most times, it isn't really about money... lol... but me and money we get issues.. I can give out my last card to someone in dire need... well, because I know that anytime I need money, God has a way to provide.

Interesting and I totally agree with you. It is not all about giving money alone but other things you can give out that the other person needs. Maybe an idea, advice, opportunity etc. It will surely come back to you because God has a way of sending people to bless us even more than we have done generously.
Thanks for sharing your testimony here, it is obvious that givers never lack at all.

Yes dear
When you give out genuinely, you won't lack..
If you give to expect more... then e fit choke you small

But if you give for giving sake, you'll surely see your reward.

You are right! Give without expecting in return. That is the greatest blessing for such being.
