Schooling : Then vs Now.

A colleague asked me to help invigilate the class assigned to her for an examination as she needed to do something else in another class, I got there, met some students sitting at the window and ordered them to get down and find somewhere else to sit, they began to murmur and said they don't have a place to sit. I told them the front was spacious enough to sit, and was pointing to the ground out of annoyance. A way of telling them that there are enough spaces to sit on the ground.

My time in this particular school has got me asking myself "What has happened to the educational system of today?" Students, especially those in public schools are not serious anymore. Many of them would dress shabbily with different colours of slippers on when the normal school shoes or sandals should be in black or brown, while their socks should be in white. Things have changed from the past; the time we were in school. There was nothing like dressing like touts to school as we feared our teachers then. Even right from the school gate, we would be sent back home if we were not properly dressed or our dressing was incomplete. In other cases, we are being punished and we dare not dress that way the next day.

But students nowadays do not care. They dress however they want. Some will wait to be reprimanded before going to take their socks from their bags, they usually come with socks but are too careless to wear them from home. Some students won't tie the buttons of their shirts as they reveal their chests. I was pushed to flog a student with that attitude and warned others not to be seen loosening their buttons and showing their chests like hooligans.

Getting to the end of the exam yesterday, a student walked in and was still proud of himself as other students started hailing him in my presence. That attitude infuriated me and I ordered everyone to stand and were all punished. When I asked the student why he was just coming in which was 10 minutes to the end of the exam, he couldn't find a genuine answer. I just shook my head for him and allowed him to write whatever was in his head down.

Back in those days, students were always afraid when it was almost examination time, everyone would go back to reading and studying as they were always doing their best not to fail, but today, students aren't scared to fail. Is it the students that won't even show up on the days of examination or those that will even come on days they feel like without any iota of seriousness in them? We always wanted to compete with our mates in class and worked hard to ace our academics, even teachers did not care this time around. Everyone wants the month to end, collect their salaries and that's all. So sad.

One bad thing about being a student back then was the lack of access to the Internet. At that time, there was not much access to the internet and those who had access to it were seen as the rich ones who could afford expensive data in those days. The only place we could go to was the cybercafé where we paid for the number of hours we would use searching and browsing for the right information. I remembered how I would follow my uncle to the cafe when he wanted to browse the internet and would use the opportunity to get answers to my questions. We were only limited to reading our books to get our answers, but today, technology has taken over. Everyone now has phones and laptops to search for whatever information they want. They do research from homes once data and networks are working.

We don't need to get out of the house, looking for a cafe when we could do that with our phones anywhere and anytime. This is something that has made education easier and efficient unlike how it was back then. Even though students misuse technology in the wrong way, we can still be proud of the advancement in this century and how it is helping us achieve a lot of things at a fast space instead of the longer hours and days which we used in the past.

School uniform or dressing should be same for everyone because it indicates that every students are the same doesn't matter there rich or poor. So I think this kind of stem should not be changed with time.
In case of internet access it's occured because of the development of technology. I think in the future the current generation student will think the same like us.

Yes. The development of technology has changed lots of things and they are using it in the negative way. Schools should be better like how it used to be.

Hmm, it's so pathetic how rotten how educational system have gotten. Compared to what I used to see, those students are even decent, down here, secondary school has turned into a place of destruction, students fight teachers, smoke in school and do all manner of things and you dare not correct them else they will visit you. Students in secondary school are into all form of fraudulent acts, as small as they are, some of them already know all the native doctors around. It hurts me, I wonder where this sudden change came from.

I love what you did, letting him write his examination in peace was the best thing to do, however since you are there, you can draw them close to you, show them love and from time to time, open their eyes to the realities of life, these children needs help and their teachers are not helping matters.

The internet nowadays is a better advantage for students, I hope they cease the opportunity and use it wisely.

It made me remember when I did my teaching practice at a government school, teachers are even afraid of beating students as they feared they could use charm on them. These students have real charms and they are left to do whatever they want. It's so painful 💔

Honestly, public schools aren't what it use to be anymore. Back then, I use to plead that mom allowed me go to public schools but now, I can't even allow my siblings go to a public school because of what's happening there today.

Students there have lost the desire to learn and it's like they are forcing them to attend classes... The absence of the internet back then back learning kind of challenging as we needed to visit cafe all the time but not anymore that students of today can access the internet even from school.

Yes, you are right George. Some public schools are filled with the bad children who aren't trained well. Some, it's the fault of their parents. Then, I so much believed public schools are the best when it comes to inculcating morals and learning into them but now? I don't think I would want to take my kids to a public school unless there is a big change in the future.

Nowadays, students don't follow teacher instructions it is very strange thing can be seen in schools and you have observed. Parents should take responsibility for realizing their kids what is school and who is teacher obedient. I was most frightened Guy in the class because I was afraid of asking questions directly from teacher because If he mind he would punish me. Nowadays students happily asks non sense question to tease their teachers.

You too have definitely observed too. Students do not care or bother what happens next when they ask nonsense questions because they are not afraid anymore. Things have really changed a lot.

Lol Teacher Princess doesn't take it lightly with those stubborn students in her class o 😅 they deserve it, things have changed too much nowadays.

School wasn't all much better back then but with all I see today, I don't even know which was much better in terms of keeping morals.

Hahaha. Those children are so stubborn mehn and shouldn't be taken lightly.
When it comes to keeping morals, I would give it to the educational system in the past compared to now. Students now owned gadgets that makes them lose control of their morals and respect.

Sincerely, educational system is getting worst day by day. No any sign of respect or regards for teachers. Student appears shabby and act in an uncared manner. I wish the educational system can get better than how it is now.

I wish it can get better with strong measures being put in place. I guess they are too lenient with the structure of education today compared to the past.

This is a huge dilemma in our country's educational system. When will there be orderliness and whose head will roll as an offering.

As a teacher in a private school and a Christian, I still choose to advice the students I teach and I also do not fail to pick up a rod when necessary to curb some insolences from them. That is just the way to help them through school.

I believe in time, they would regain their consciousness and understand life better

Yes, advising these children shouldn't be out of the context because it is part of what we could give them always to put them in check while focusing on their studies. I do not fail to do my best in that part while delivering my lecture for the day.
Thank you for your comment.

It’s the reminder about cyber cafe for me. Gone are the good old days. Now the internet as taken over and come to think about it, it has even exposed the younger generations to more than the teachers are yet to be exposed to. Good or bad there is always an economic advantage to it.

That is when you will see students asking questions sometimes, out of the context and making teachers feel they aren't trying which they are. Students are only going too faster than their brain can carry them.

Students don't even regard their teachers nowadays, it takes well-disciplined pupils to behave well.

There's a huge difference between the educational system then and now. Despite the nonexistent of smart phones, electricity, and new advanced technologies, then we survived. Taking our education by the neck like we need it to breathe well.

When I see children now with technologies, they need to do house chores, do their homework, and all. And still, they act like school isn't for them, it is very painful. A very bad look on our educational system of now.

Students of now aren't too serious with education today and it's disheartening to hear.
Yes, it's Friday and I am excited to spend the weekend to relax enough before the next week comes.
Thank you, fellow dreemer.

Nowadays that student use to beat teachers? You will discipline a student the parents will come and fight you. Shebi they have brainwashed most of them that schooling is scam? Their eye will clear.

Their eyes will clear my sister. I used to them my students that they are playing with their future if they don't adhere to what they are telling them regarding their attitude to education.

During my days in Abeokuta, there was a day I took cab to panseke. While on the road one of the passengers in the bus who was a student got in an argument with the driver, this kid based on his uniform he should be around Jss2 or 3. Could you believe that he threatened to beat the driver if he dares to say anything again.

I was shocked when the driver kept quiet for him, after he got down at his destination that was the passengers were telling me that his brother is a notorious thug, so no one dares mess with him.

Imagine being a teacher to such a student, how do you think he will be reacting in class.

Wow. Can you imagine. Things have changed a lot this time and students aren't serious with their studies anymore. Things weren't like this in the past.
Well, I won't be shocked about that because I have seen a lot during my counselling practicum in a secondary school. Students are always tying charm around them and no teacher, even principal could not dare punish them because of the charm on them. It's such a pity.

The crop of students that we have now are not serious with education. In recent years, some kind of music released by some Nigerian artist compounded their woes. Many of them now see education as scam. A very dangerous trend.

The coming of internet has really changed a lot of things about the accessibility to information and educational materials. It is a progress worth commending.

Even my time in the university, there were those who kept shouting school is a scam without being serious with their education but a time will come in their lives when they would know and realize how education is important in society, even if one won't use their certificate to feed.

Students today do not care whether they pass or fail as they do whatever they want.
