In a world attacked with images of models and unrealistic beauty standards that have been altered in different ways, there has been a complexity in the relationship between body image and fashion aesthetics. From shining magazine covers to social media influencers, the way an "Ideal" body is being portrayed has contributed to feelings of inadequacy among individuals. However, amidst this unattainable perfection, there have been some movements helping to challenge these norms while celebrating diversity in all ways.

In this post, I shall be discussing at length the following;

  • Standard of beauty in society.
  • The implications the standard of beauty has on individuals.
  • The relationship between the fashion industry and body image.
  • Tips to embracing positive image through fashion.

Standard of Beauty in Society

The society's standard of beauty has been shaped a long time ago by media, advertisements and popular culture. From having a waste so slim to flawless skin, the way an 'ideal' body type has been painted has helped to drive in expectations that aren't real and energized comparison and self-doubts among cultures. These standards often dictate traits and characteristics an individual must possess which have been idealized and valued, promoting the emergence of fashion trends and cosmetics to body ideals and how they should be practised.

Society's standards of beauty aren't fixed as they are susceptible to change over time which are shaped by social and cultural factors. However, with these standards, individuals need to understand that beauty comes in different shapes, sizes, and colours, and so, one should embrace their true and unique attributes rather than conforming to such standards in society as this is where true confidence stems from.

The implications standards of beauty have on an individual

OIG1 (1).jpeg

When individuals are not able to meet up with the beauty standard in society, they start to feel incomplete, which results in feelings of inadequacy, low self-worth and reduced self-esteem. Individuals are easily blinded by the exposure to images and messages that aren't real to body types, thereby comparing themselves to another which results in feelings of insecurity and self-doubt. Different cosmetics have the caption "make your skin flawless" with an image that is not real, and when individuals see this, they go miles in making sure to have such skin, forgetting to appreciate who they are and embracing their unique body type. In the end, they become something else as a result of damaged skin through the use of these fake cosmetics.

Another implication is that the pressure to keep up with the standard of beauty in society will take a toll on their well-being which leads to stress, anxiety and depression. The constant pursuit of an ideal body type that is unattainable can create unending negative thoughts and emotions which deprive an individual of seeking true happiness within and can impact their quality of life. In addition, the society body shaming and discriminating based on appearance can increase feelings of shame, guilt and social isolation among individuals who do not fit into the beauty standards.

The relationship between the fashion industry and body image

The fashion industry has often been criticized for promoting beauty standards that aren't real, meanwhile, some progress aims towards good representation and greater inclusivity. Even though glossy models are dignifying the covers of magazines, the need to include positive body image has been recognized. However, the work is much on individuals that regardless of size, shape or ethnicity, they should be seen and represented in the fashion world.

Despite this progress, the fashion industry continues to struggle with issues of diversity, size inclusivity and representation. Some brands still allow for a narrow range of body types, contributing to individuals who feel not welcomed into these standards. In addition, the existence of airbrushing and manipulating fashion photography digitally contributes to unrealistic beauty ideals which further keeps increasing the feelings of inadequacy and is responsible for low self-esteem of individuals.

Tips for embracing positive image through fashion

Individuals should cultivate a habit of finding clothes that fit well. By investing in clothing that comfortably fits one's body and adding to the unique shape, individuals would embrace their body's unique proportions and celebrate themselves more.

Experimenting with different styles and exploring fashion trends to find which one is suitable and never being afraid to step out of their comfort zone while trying new looks that portray their personality and mood.

Prioritising comfort when selecting clothing and accessories is very important. Finding fabrics that are not too tight but soft and breathable. When individuals feel comfortable in their clothing, they become more confident as they carry themselves with ease.

Deviate from the habit of comparing your body or style to others because you are unique. Reminding ourselves that everyone's journey with body image and fashion is different and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to beauty.

Lastly, developing a positive mindset when getting dressed each day. Instead of feeling imperfect or trying to sense flaws, let's celebrate our body and strength and embrace the beauty that comes with them. Affirming ourselves with positive self-talk and reminding ourselves that we are unique and worthy of love while accepting ourselves just the way we are.

Society's standards of beauty aren't fixed as they are susceptible to change over time which are shaped by social and cultural factors.

fashion is well known as an unsettled phenomenon at any given time. That is why fashion trend is not a static phenomenon, what was being adopted/followed as fashion 20 years ago, has now beome archaic, outmoded.

Aesthetic standards are established by socio-cultural interaction, expereince, taste, celebrity-hood, temporal & spatial context, and perception.

But, it is the perception which plays a leading role in formulating the configuration of asethetics. However, the stimulation through perception should be informed by quality, that quality must be vetted through experience by the society, to make it a fashion trend.

I love your input here. Fashion styles and trends keeps changing, and so, what we know years ago have been outmoded and we have newer trends showing up but we must be careful in bringing out quality rather than unrealistic Fashion style and body image. Thank you 😊

beauty is subjective and based on a person's perspective, this is why no 2 person can have the same opinion over that

Natural beauty rocks, but society places too much emphasis on trends and fashion and beauty especially for teens and young ladies.

We need to do what pleases us!

Exactly Teng. We would only find ourselves unhappy if we do not stick to what pleases us instead of trying to become someone else.

I believe social media has worsened how beauty is perceived in today’s world. Many people (mostly women) are losing sleep over little “imperfections” that are completely normal, but shamed by modern society. It’s a pity where we’ve gotten to- that make up and plastic surgery are the solution people turn to to fit in and be considered beautiful.

Yes, the social media is one place most people are lured into conforming to society's norms rather than loving and appreciating themselves better and it is why they end up killing themselves in the end.

We just need to learn to embrace our beauty, and not let what society thinks get to us, of course, while striving to become the best version of ourselves without letting pressure get into us.

We all are beautiful in different ways, and comparison will only steal our joy and happiness.
