Sometime last year, not long after I started painting on fabric, someone reached out wanting to do a memorial portrait of her late mother on a piece of fabric (ìpèlé) which was part of her wedding outfit. The ìpèlé is a shoulder dressing worn by African women to complete a traditional outfit. Pictures below...

Little did I know that this would soon become a trend, I have since painted three others just like that. The process is usually filled with mixed feelings for me as I am painting dead people.

While I try to think of their individual stories and the kind of lives they led, each time I get reminded that life is short and death is inevitable. I am in fact getting emotional typing this. We better just make the best of the precious time we have.

Go out more, build relationships, help as many people as you can, take that hold step, live life to the fullest!

This sounds like a lovely heirloom keepsake! That’s awesome you are able to bring peace and joy to families to sorrow. Not a bad career, in terms of art jobs.
