Diminutive Morel Mushrooms of 2022
Having stashed my bike to continue afoot, I walked the meandering paths of the forest in search of a rare mushroom. I have read the portends. The May apple plants have "flattened", ramp leaves have shown themselves, temperatures are starting to be around 50°F, and it just rained. All these signs point to the arrival of spring in full.
I was walking slowly, heading north back home. It was then that I spotted one and then another and another. A little family.
They were barely a few inches tall so I did not disturb them. I left them so that they could continue to grow and release their spores upon the lands.
I've never seen one like this. Well, they're out there! I'd go back and look for more but we've had a pretty crumby season so they probably look like this everywhere around here. I also feel crumby at the moment anyway. Only 4 mushrooms spotted this year. Tisk tisk. Better luck next year. Remember! End of April, beginning of May!
