“Es bueno que alguien guarde la memoria”: por qué escribo sobre los que no deberían olvidarse? [In English too]

Hace unos días, mientras repasaba viejas grabaciones de Radio Progreso, me topé con el nombre de un programa que siempre me ha parecido una definición perfecta de lo que significa estar vivos: “La gran aventura de la humanidad”. Y pensé que, en el fondo, eso es exactamente lo que hacemos cuando nos sentamos a escribir sobre alguien que nos marcó. No importa si es un escritor, un científico, un deportista o un actor: cada vida bien contada es una aventura que merece seguir viajando en el tiempo.

Me resulta profundamente conmovedor leer y también escribir sobre personalidades que, por supuesto, al ser seres humanos, cometen pifias en su vida y eligen maneras de vivir porque tienen todo el derecho a ello. Pero por encima de esos tropiezos, saben plasmar y dejar constancia de sus grandezas y sus talentos. Y eso, en un mundo que a veces solo busca el escándalo o el titular fácil, se agradece el doble.

Siempre he pensado que la primera aproximación a la vida de alguien es apenas un primer paso, necesario e inevitable, pero insuficiente si nos quedamos ahí. Por eso insisto en que, cuando se investiga con personas que los acompañaron, que estuvieron a su lado, se puede llegar a conocer mucho más. Los discípulos, los amigos, los contemporáneos que aún nos acompañan guardan tesoros que ningún archivo ni hemeroteca puede ofrecer. Ahí está la experiencia del Actor Studio, por ejemplo, donde no solo se actuaba, sino que se desnudaba el alma del intérprete para entenderlo desde adentro.

Me motiva, y lo digo con toda humildad, escribir sobre esos seres extraordinarios que representan un patrimonio intangible para la cultura y la ciencia universal. Personas que dieron testimonio de su época y cumplieron con ese propósito que alguien definió como dejar el mundo mucho mejor que como lo encontramos. Porque sí, creo firmemente que muchos de ellos lo lograron, al menos en el sentido de lo que mostraron del mundo, del testimonio que dieron y de lo que transformaron para bien.

Y es que los grandes maestros, los verdaderos, no se guardan nada para sí. Porque lo que les mueve no es la competencia ni el afán de ser los más descollantes, sino el impacto social, la extensión de su legado. Enseñan para que los discípulos los superen, para que el conocimiento sea un río que fluya y no un pozo estancado. Esa generosidad es la que merece ser contada con detalle, con nombres, con fechas, con anécdotas que humanicen y que a la vez eleven.

No puedo evitar traer a colación a Stefan Zweig, ese maestro del retrato biográfico que entendió como pocos que escribir sobre alguien no es solo enumerar logros, sino adentrarse en sus contradicciones, en sus silencios, en esa chispa que lo hace único. Y también recuerdo, porque no me lo atribuyo mal, aquel verso de Eliseo Diego que sintetiza todo lo que siento: “Es bueno que alguien guarde la memoria”. Porque la memoria no es un acto pasivo de archivar, sino un acto activo de justicia, de amor y de compromiso con el futuro.

Hay muchísimas personas que merecen que se escriban artículos sobre ellas, que merecen que se escriba su biografía con detalles específicos. Y falta mucho por hacer, sobre todo en el campo de los actores y actrices, de los artistas que construyeron su obra lejos de los focos principales. Por eso hay que persistir, investigar, entrevistar, escuchar mientras aún estén a tiempo. Cada testimonio rescatado es una piedra más en el mosaico de nuestra memoria colectiva.

Porque, al final, lo que hacemos al escribir sobre ellos no es otra cosa que prolongar su viaje, asegurarnos de que sigan caminando con nosotros aunque el tiempo pase. Y eso, en medio de este presente tan vertiginoso y olvidadizo, se ha vuelto casi un acto de rebeldía. Pero es una rebeldía necesaria, hermosa y, sobre todo, humana.

A few days ago, while going through old recordings from Radio Progreso, I came across the name of a program that has always struck me as the perfect definition of what it means to be alive: "The Great Adventure of Humanity." And I thought that, deep down, that's exactly what we do when we sit down to write about someone who left a mark on us. It doesn't matter if it's a writer, a scientist, an athlete, or an actor—every life well told is an adventure that deserves to keep traveling through time.

I find it deeply moving to read and also to write about personalities who, of course, being human beings, make mistakes in their lives and choose their own ways of living because they have every right to do so. But beyond those stumbles, they know how to capture and leave evidence of their greatness and their talents. And that, in a world that sometimes only looks for scandal or the easy headline, is doubly appreciated.

I've always thought that the first approach to someone's life is just a first step—necessary and inevitable, but insufficient if we stop there. That's why I insist that when you dig deeper and talk to people who accompanied them, who were by their side, you can get to know so much more. Disciples, friends, contemporaries who are still with us hold treasures that no archive or library can offer. They teach so that their disciples may surpass them, so that knowledge becomes a flowing river, not a stagnant well. That generosity is what deserves to be told in detail, with names, dates, anecdotes that humanize and elevate at the same time.

I can't help but bring up Stefan Zweig, that master of biographical portraiture who understood like few others that writing about someone isn't just listing achievements but delving into their contradictions, their silences, that spark that makes them unique. And there's still so much to do, especially in the field of actors and actresses, artists who built their work away from the main spotlight. That's why we must persist, investigate, interview, listen while there's still time. Every rescued testimony is another stone in the mosaic of our collective memory.
