Four Old School 80s Hip Hop Record Singles: Miami Bass/Electro/West Coast

(Edited)

I just picked up some new 80s hip hop records this week, so I am sharing them with all my web 3 friends-and enemies. Today, we have a couple of 1989 Miami bass records, an electro hip hop record from 1984, and a late 80s hip hop comedy novelty record. Enjoy.

Def Dames
"976-Boom"
1989

Def Dames was a female duo from California that was active between 87 and 92, replacing one of the original MC's in 1991. While their albums were written by their DJ, supposedly they were the first female rap group from the central valley. The west coast 80s rappers were known for their use of the electro and bass influence, so I always assumed they were a Miami group, as I have another single or two from the group...I don't always research rebel single I own... Unless I'm posting about it, of course!

Captain Rock
"Captain Rock To The Future Shock"
1984

Captain Rock had some singles in the original cosmic early 80s electro era, my personal favorite era of hip hop. The futurism of 80s technology mixed with the burgeoning hip hop sound is a classic combination. While the fad would not last forever, it's influences would come back in music time and time again since the 80s. Captain Rock is probably best known for the single "Bad Times (I can't Stand It), which is one of the very early rap singles with a sung chorus, years to before 'it takes two' and definitely an attempt at crossover be radio, as you have to remember the were no hip hop stations back by then-just a few specialized rap shows.

Bobby Jimmy And The Critters
"Hair Or Weave"
1989

Bobby Jimmy was basically the "Weird Al of West Coast hip hop" in the 80s. Here he is with a song dissing weaves, a not uncommon theme among late 80s rap songs, but something that hasn't been a topic for quite some time now. Bobby Had a bunch of great songs and parodies, including 'roaches,'his parody of timex social club's 'rumors.' and Arabian Prince, of NWA, was an original member of his group.

Tony Rock
"Street Resident"
1989

Tony Rock was on Skywalker Records, Luther Campbell's label(2 live crew Luke, before her got sued by lucasfilm, of course) asked the album is called 'let me take you to the rock house,' so I don't think they're beating around the bush with what they liked to do for fun down in Miami. The B side to this record has a cool yellow magic orchestra sample, but it's 'kindd of a house track-although hip house was never my thing, it is done pretty tastefully. .. In case you thought I was exaggerating:

Thanks for reading , I hope you found some new jams and\or liked my post🎙️⏺️

Bobby Jimmy is fairly well known, being on in lots of mixes I've heard over the years...but the other one is a forgotten dustbin classic
