first snow of autumn at St. Petersburg

avatar

The snow have fallen at the city; I've got tonns of impressions and share them with you in my today post, for the #wednesdaywalk challenge hold by @tattoodjay, -- which I try to enter as frequent as possible.

taken by Canon 5D +16-35mm, .raw conversion applied. (c) all photos by me, if not stated otherwise.

St.Petersburg is a northern city (also known as the North Venice, for the reason). Its famous branded 'white nights' take place in May-June, which is the best time to visit it, due to the maximum daylight time and weather issues. The city has weather issues, a lot.... and I really hate autumn and winter cause its massive rains, strong winds, cold and humidity... and terrifically short daytime! -- a diabolical combination...

wed_002_snow.jpg
Blame it the global warming or what, but our children are forgetting what the snow is! Even when the winter brings in some snow on the table, within the city borders it is momentarily being mutated into dirt, slush and mud. The 1st snow is not an exception, at least I managed to steal some shots on the very same morning when it appeared! So, here we go.

wed_002.JPG
This mountain ash grows in my yard. For two weeks I was passing by and thinking: what a classy sight, I need to take a pic (lazy me!). Fortunately, it does not disappear so quickly, unlike mushrooms. Luckily I waited... till the snow, and my photos came out even better. Sometimes procrastination benefits, hehe.

wed_007.jpg

Birdies food supplies for the winter, thats it.

the playground.

Here is the cherry tree. In May it had its stellar hour, now it pleases me with little neat yellow leaves, which come in solid quantaties.

It was 1st thing I saw in the morning, when stepped out the door on my way to the office. I actually already noticed this whiteness behind the windows, so I put 2+2 together, and put the camera in my backpack, so I was prepared.

I get it so that tomorrow this snow may melt and disappear, and all the leaves turn into dirt, and this beauty may not happen again in the near 12 months, so, the pictures should be taken here and now, not someday! Therefore, I pressed the shutter again and again, enjoying the sight and without thinking about the consequences. I arrived at work late for two hours...

Chestnut tree.

Here I am entering another yard, with more chestnuts, some graffiti, and a random cat encounter.

Isnt it good? 50-mm lens for a long time was my fave and everyday companion, although I always was feeling limited to a certain points of view, close-ups, etc. This one (16-35mm) allows me to grab architecture and landscape shots, and -- at the same time -- good close-ups of the stuff and things and objects, like this one (which I value very much). Its an indispensable lens for reporting, street, trips, and sight-seeing.

Here I actually encountered a hunting cat. He was aiming at the birdies, but decided to discontinue till I leave. Ok, I made two shots only and left asap.

A bit of graffiti behind the garbage area -- looking like a palimpsest, isnt it? (I am accumulating the graffiti shots for a single post, one day). Ok, in total I did 140 shots, but I guess it would not be a wise thing to fit them all into this neat post... I will share the leftowers in my next posts. At this point I left the apartment building zone, jumped on a bus and headed to my office, where I did took a few more amazing pics, having the same morning, same snow but a bit more sunlight, which was a good for the pics.

Next time!

Enjoy the pictures, join the challenge, and check the #wednesdaywalk tag to explore very interesting and quite different corners across the globe

same with me, my friend! macro lens go to the closet... and the camera most of the time stays at home, too. (and it is the least thing to blame the winter!) I am glad you enjoyed the pics.

Hope you weren't too much in trouble for your delay... You need to manage better your time 😁
Thanks for your nice shots, a different and personal approach to your city which is more valuable...

no! I didnt! dont worry! :=)
I elongate my life time feeding on the night hours (what else can I do>? no magic button "make it 28 hours per day). glad you enjoyed the images.

I hate cold, winter and snow, probably there will be no good images of it at all (or very bad!) :))

ps. loved your recent googly contribution

Yeah I would need a 28 hours day too !
Thanks for your kind words of my post... As you already now I use to make 'on the fly' mobile shots so quality is not my virtue 😂

well, since you use modern smartphones... (which are real beasts nowadays!) and capture the scene with a good lighting.... I can go with that.
8-)

The snow looks so cool on these red fruits on the tree and also the other autumnal trees look so nice - as if someone had sprinkled powdered sugar on it - very nice shots, @qwerrie 😊

thank you. watching it alltogether I am not too happy (wouldnt they look better if they were all the same colour grade, no?) but maybe its poor light to blame... not my poor raw editing skills :)

You're welcome @qwerrie 🙂
These were the first snow photos I have seen this year and I like the red fruits with the white cover most. Too dark? I don't mind 🙂

There's a lot going on with the !BEER and they are adding some additional features. Maybe there's just no commenting anymore, but this confuses a bit, I think.

Fantastic photos! I love each one. The bright yellows against the snow are stunning! What a great walk through my favorite city!

Well, I am very glad that you were carrying your camera. These pictures are wonderful and I had never seen St. Petersburg through those lenses. There seems to be a certain liveliness to the images.
Thank you for sharing with us.

It's lovely to see that first snowfall, and lucky that it was such a small amount! Beautiful photos. We call that amount of snow a "dusting". Just enough to make everything pretty.

@trafalgar, @kewinwong, do explain your downvotes please. why do you consider my content low quality and less deserving rewarding than fast-hand smartphone click-click 1-minute posts (a-la "what I had for breakfast today"). I spent 2 days working on this story, put a lot of efforts into editing the pictures..

explain why

I know how much effort goes into a post like this, and I am shocked to see it get any kind of downvote. This is very discouraging. I'm so sorry it happened to you.

now, lets say: you have seen it... (maybe a few more shots of central, parade streets later thru the winter, when there will be more snow) and -- remember, dont visit the city in autumn and winter :=)

Hahah Ok I haven’t seen it!. Here where I live it gets down to -20 C, what is the coldest it gets there?

0

peak could be at -33 C but that is not the problem;
everything is relative. cold is perceived very bad in high humidity. and the humidity here is high. so even -10 C get all the shit out of you :/
plus, the constant winds...

Excellent Wednesday Walk! I especially love two shots, the one of snow melting on a deck (beautiful image) and that last one, which is downright trippy.

you know, I value feed back like this very much, its important for me to hear about other people's faves. (the 'melting snow' one -- its actually sidewalk bricks, not the desk). my personal faves are the ones with rowan-tree.

Wow @qwerrie some beautiful shots here!!! I should come visit to experience some cold winter weather!! We had amazing snow last year in the Western Cape in South Africa where I come from. We spent one whole delightful day frolicking in the snow. It's quite a drive from our home hence just one day but it was wonderful and totally worth it!!

St. Petersburg and Chicago have the same weather.

... not sure of that! we have the sea here, which adds a lot of moisture, wind and weather fluctuations. Chicago has a more stable weather, I suppose?

and -- definitely more shrooms out there then here :))))

We have a sea/lake too lol. I'm sure winter is worse over there, though i suspect it could be similar as yours since we had snow already too. My poor shrooms over here got frozen to death already :-(
