fungi hunting in Karelian forest - 23 foto

Hola, setero! Today I share some mushroom impressions I brought from my day trip to Karelia forest this September. My friend @bambuka invited me to check the forest together, in the middle of the week (when other mushroom hunters supposed to sit at homes, unlike on weekends, when forest suddenly becomes pretty crowded place...) Of course, I gladly agreed! Joint venture is a bit a sports, a game, i.e. double fun!

So, early in the morning we were there -- it took us 2 hours to reach the place by car.

2022-oct-2959w-h.jpg

This time I equipped myself with a lightweight and roomy wicker basket (not like last time, when I focused on photography and for mushroom trofeys disrespectfully grabbed just a couple of plastic bags ...)

Waterproof rubber boots, a charged phone - were the must... a little foldable knife to pick the mushrooms, and of course a small lunch bag also was with us. The honourable @bambuka (in the shot above) had his favourite staff with him - in our silver years it's not a superfluous thing on long hikes...

2022-oct-2970w-h.jpg

The weather treated us well. It was not a sunny day, tho the sun visited and illuminated our photos several times; generally the lighting was decent. At times the sky sent a very slight rain from above, almost imperceptible (known as "mushroom rain") that wasn't going to wet us at all... so, the rain jackets we had brought with us, were of no use. It's not a big problem - that kind of stock is not excessive, I was happy to carry that weight on me.

2022-oct-2975w-h.jpg

To keep the good tradition, I took a picture of the first mushroom I encountered. No, it was not edible and I did not pick it...

2022-oct-3219w-h.jpg

There were many mushrooms in the forest, and we enjoyed and greeted all of them - even the non-edible specimens, cause we both are not just mushroom pickers, but also photo-hunters :)

2022-oct-3217w-h.jpg

Oh, I forgot to tell you about this side of our equipment. @bambuka is a Sony devotee (a full frame compact Alpha in his hands, in the photo above), and I arm myself with a full-frame Canon 5D camera. This time I've brought along a manual fish-eye (Zenitar 16mm), and my everyday fave - macro telephoto Sigma 150mm, most of the captures you see in this post were made with it.

2022-oct-3213w-s.jpg

Ok, now let me present you some proof-pics -- indeed, there were mushrooms in the forest.

2022-oct-3351w-h.jpg

This is Amanita muscaria, aka fly agaric - the most fancy, bright and (visually) beautiful mushroom of Russian forests.

2022-oct-3360w-h.jpg

I assure you, no water bottle taken from home was used to make these photos - nature took care of everything! The rain makes the mushroom cap look especially spectacular...

2022-oct-3302w-h.jpg

Above is the same mushroom, a fly agaric again. Yes, it doesn't necessarily have to look spectacular, sometimes it looks plain like that... especially when it is aged. By the way, note the "whirling" bokeh of my Sigma.

2022-oct-2985w-h.jpg

The old rotting stump is also a food! in the photo above, it is besieged by an army of marauding soldiers... oh, I was going to say: saprophyte fungi.

2022-oct-2994w-h.jpg

Léccinum scábrum is not among my favourite mushrooms; they are as usual very soft, soak water and lose shape quickly (also, in the dish they give no texture ...). Very often even young Léccinum is no longer good enough to pick up... this mushroom you see in the photo, I picked just to hang it on a tree branch, in a prominent place -- left it as a present for a forest squirrel.

2022-oct-2997w-h.jpg

2022-oct-3042w-h.jpg

2022-oct-3086w-h.jpg

Mushroom abundance! A case where you can cut mushrooms with a scythe :)

2022-oct-3091w-h.jpg

2022-oct-3149w-h.jpg

The autumn forest is a great place for photo walks; every bush is strewn with berries and colourful leaves, snags and stumps are covered in moss and lichens and are a joy to behold. I think the winter forest, for all its charms, is much more boring - all the beauty of nature is hidden under a thick blanket.

2022-oct-3150w-h.jpg

What else to tell? All in all, I took about 500 pics before both my batteries died (I had a spare one as well). There was no room left in my basket, to pick more mushrooms.

We were overwhelmed with visual impressions and mushrooms too, and still we couldn't stop and our hands reached for almost every good mushroom we saw... and our feet were already starting to complain that it was time to turn around towards home.

2022-oct-3135w-hs.jpg

Oh, I forgot to tell you about our lunch. We stopped for some sandwiches and a chat in this lovely clearing, here I changed my macro-telephoto to fisheye, and took some panoramic shots (not very successful... I'm having trouble focusing manually on this lens, it requires considerable adjustment of focus at even a slight change in distance, doing it all manually -- not easy...)

2022-oct-3226w-hs.jpg

We treated each other to our cheese and turkey meat sandwiches... and I remember a very nice moment: we snacked on them with lingonberries, which we picked straight from the bushes. It was divine! By September the lingonberries were fully ripe and even more so, a little overripe, a little fermented from hanging on the bushes, and bursting with gusto in the mouth, it was a beautiful natural sauce, the best lingonberries I'll remember for a long time.

Another thing worth mentioning -- at some point I got so carried away with taking photos that I lost sight of my friend and, more importantly, lost it on hearing, so that even loud "awwwws" made it impossible to tell which way I should go to connect us together: all directions in the forest are the same, you know... luckily, my phone still was charged, and after a few attempts and apparently 40 minutes or so, our little company have reunited. But I really got lost in the woods! No jokes... This little adventure certainly added some spice to our hike, and I will remember for a long time.

2022-oct-3151w-hs.jpg

Time to say goodbye! -- and next time.

2022-oct-3397w-h.jpg

And the last shot; the best part of our harvest - Ceps - already at home, on the cutting board. My wife was surprised and pleased (she is a mushroom lover too), she roasted them with potatoes the very next day. Bon appetit!

How fun to see two "fun-guys" (pronounced fun-gis) searching for mushrooms to photograph together in nature.

Amazing images as always!

I am very fond of going on such adventures. When a person goes to such places, he feels completely relaxed and forgets the sorrows of the world. You have taken all the pictures from a great angle. All the trees and greenery looks so beautiful. I really enjoy your trip. I am also going to fall like this after some days with my friends I will also share full pictures and details in my blog. overall your photography is awesome but third picture is my favorite in your photography. Thanks for sharing your happiness with us.

It 's me, who was lost, actually. And it was @bambuka's car, generally "he was the boss" -- I could not even imagine if I could return back to the city myself at all, when, and in what condition 😨 but this story has a happy end: I called him on the phone, received a 'misty' orientation, and with the second try I found him. After that I started walking beside him, "like a ponytail" :)

It's nice when the forest is so pristine, there is room for exploration, for unity with nature - and you can take a break from other people, disconnect from society and the city. I rarely have such an opportunity, I'm a resident of the metropolis, you know...

I'm very glad you liked the visuals. I'll be sure to show you more! and a slice of !PIZZA 🍕

I knew it was you getting lost! Like you, I livexaway from the forest, in Washington DC, but have another house on the Atlantic Shore.

It wasxa great story, it is your strength, that and the photos!

Thanks again!

But I really got lost in the woods! No jokes...

It's always a good idea to keep your direction in mind, rather than depending on tech or a friend :) ...

I'm having trouble focusing manually on this lens, it requires considerable adjustment of focus at even a slight change in distance, doing it all manually -- not easy...)

Maybe practice in your yard until you can get it just the way you want, time after time :) ?

Thanks for the vizit! Glad you enjoyed and supported that longread, hehe.
The trouble / problem / issue (you name it) with this manual lens is... its ultra wide angle, i.e. impossible for me to decide looking at the focusing screen of DSLR, if I got the focus correctly or not. I can check the capture I made, magnify and inspect it, but it takes time and simply it is another excessive task to do. And the focusing coil is pretty big, it has sections 0.5 meter > 0.8 > 1 > 1,2 > 1.5 > etc . I mean, ofc I know-how, and I can do that, I can focus manually at an object but it takes some noticeable time and efforts... and if my object changes its position every 10 seconds? or if I change the objects? all this leads to a sufficient problem. taking pictures of different objects with this lens, at different distances, doing it quickly and getting good clear focused photos -- is hardly possible ... unattainable task... and this is not a matter of practice 😨😪😜
I still love using this lens a lot! I just do it less often and I know I can't rely 100% on the result. !LOLZ
thats it!

WOW, what a beautiful nature that surrounds you, it is very similar to my Asiago plateau in northern Italy, where I too harvest Porcini mushrooms! I love to eat them with croutons, or raw with oil, lemon and parmesan flakes! Beautiful post, I like people who love being in the middle of nature ;). I'm sorry I saw it late, otherwise I would have supported you, but I'll come and see you in the next posts ;). My best regards.

Yes, that's true, but I would always like to respond right away, because I am very pleased with the comments and interacting with the people who are on this platform, who have a more beautiful mentality than the people I meet on a daily basis. But it's true that I have to balance the two things, because sometimes I seem to exaggerate with Hive staying up late at night to write, then in the morning the alarm goes off and I'm always melted. I have to optimize the times perhaps.

I was very pleased to meet you here, I wish you a wonderful day ;).
