Amazing Nature thematic challenge - Mushrooms!

(Edited)

This post goes for #AmazingNature Thematic Challenge. The weekly theme was: Mushrooms.

I like mushroom hunting walks in the forest, but most often I pick mushrooms without going far from our summer house - our place is not like a traditional garden or orchard: we love to grow mosses, lichens, and non-decorative trees typical of an ordinary forest: spruce, birch, pine, oak, aspen. This creates a suitable environment / conditions for mushroom growing (and picking!) at our place.

And we really have a lovely variety of mushrooms, a lot of different species! This year (due to dry weather for most of the summer) there appeared very few mushrooms, but nevertheless, I found edible representatives of the following species: redhead, suillus, boletus edulus, russula, oyster mushroom, puff-ball. (Not speaking about inedible and the ones I could not identify!). Once I will try to make a count of all the species I found at our place.

This is how the little fly agarics Amanita muscaria look when they just hatched out of their "egg", pierced the ground and climbed out. During the day (or night) they will stand up, catch their breath, and then briskly begin to grow!

This mushroom has fully grown - look, you see, the edges of its cap bent up and formed a kind of "forest jacuzzi"? This mushroom is probably too late to collect, it was necessary to find it earlier, until it stood still, swelled from rain water and lost some of its nutrients.

Edible species

Most of Amanita's family are inedible or toxic, some of them ave deadly poisonous (like: Amanita phalloides, Amanita virosa). The well-known red fly agaric, aka Amanita muscaria (which entertained you in the beginning of my post) in its raw form and without processing, in addition to moderate toxicity, also has a hallucinogenic effect. A small number of species are edible, for example, the common in the forests of Europe Amanita rubescens, or Amanita ovoidea. Growing on the Mediterranean coast and in the forests of southern Europe, the Caesar mushroom - Amanita caesarea - is considered a delicacy.

My small farm for growing this valuable mushroom. Since there are many birches on the site, the mycelium of the fungus is doing well. Keep in mind: Without trees in the neighborhood, mushrooms refuse to grow in the garden beds.

Recipes /

Mushroom tea. Today I will share with you a recipe for the simplest fly agaric disposal option. Moreover, as a raw material we will use Amanita muscaria - which cannot be confused with anything, so you can be sure that you are taking the right mushroom, exactly the one you need.

So, the 1st thing: collect well-developed red fly agarics; those that grew in a meadow under the rays of sun, not in the shade, are the best ones. Then put their caps on a baking sheet for drying. If you have an appropriate device, set it to a temperature not higher than 50 degrees. (I don't have one, so I dried them naturally). Store the dried caps in a tightly sealed glass jar.

So, we prepared dried caps and have them by the hand. Take as much water as you expect to drink. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice (or 2-3 crushed vitamin C tablets if the preparation takes place in field conditions and the lemon is nowhere to buy). Grind one medium-sized mushroom cap with your hands, add to boiling water and keep for 15 minutes over low heat. Optional part: you may add a common black tea bag during the last three minutes - it improves the taste of the tea, provoding a better taste and flavour, but this is not necessary, you should decide for yourself. Note that fly agaric itself does not give nor the rich color to which we are accustomed, neither the taste (but it gives something better!). Then cool the resulting drink, strain and discard the remnants of the boiled mushroom, add sugar to taste - and thats all, the drink is ready to consume. This drink has a tonic and invigorating effect. I wish you to boost your immunity. Stay Healthy!

Thank you for entering the competition.
I read about red toadstool tea for the first time. It can be seen that my ancestors were not shamans :-)

I see those white polka dotted red mushrooms in the gardens around here.
You’ve got a great photo of it with frog!

Fancy! Very spectacular shrooms. And they can be useful (tho they are indeed toxic).
Do the said gardens have 'wild trees' around?
