snail shepherd (3)

This summer, I met snails only once, when I came for 2 days to my countryside house cottage. But I used this opportunity to the maximum: I met every snail I met for almost an hour: on strawberry leaves, on a mossy stump, and on mushrooms. I count it "portrait in the interior."

The sun was shining through the leaves, the wind kept moving both the trees and the leaves, as well as the clouds, so the illumination was pretty dynamic. Look at two photos taken with the same settings, but what a big difference! By the way, this snail is crawling across the mushroom, too.

I was especially lucky with puff-mushrooms. Sunlight was falling exactly at the mushroom, leaving everything else in the shade, and highlighting snails inner textures in a great way; the snail was in no hurry, so I took plenty of beautiful shots.

a few details from mythology

In general, the snail is seen as the son of a crocodile, snake and dragon. Snails always were filled with meanings, that quite mutated through the time. And the self-evident “slowness” is by no means the first on this list of symbols! In ancient times (Egypt, Babylon) they were a symbol of eternity, the moon and fertility. In Buddhism, the shell of a snail is a time frozen on the body of a living being, and the snail itself is a personified patience and perseverance. Also it is one of three symbols of victory in the fight against misunderstandings and conflicts. According to Feng Shui -- snails are a vivid symbol of peace and tranquility, as well as "success in achieving the goal". (Do you want your dreams come true? wanna get some harmony in your life, wealth, success? Decorate your house with a lot of snails).
In medieval Europe, they personified sin and laziness (as born from a mud and feed on it). During the Renaissance, they symbolized modesty (grape snails lock up themselves in their sink with a calcareous lid and break it to come back to light, after winter cold or a drought - that's why they also personified the rebirth of Christ). Any snail also symbolizes the motto "I carry all of my stuff with me".

Here is a small essay where you can learn more about snails and their symbolizm: http://light-guess.livejournal.com/453324.html

I provide the 1st image for @Qurator Photo-Friday competition

also, I provide this for AmazingNature challenge by @adalger. the snails are truly one of the greatest creations of mother nature! the process of shooting them is as endless, as the spiral of their shell.

exactly so! this is one of the reasons why they are a nice, one of the favourites, objects for macro shooting (along with mushrooms).

and they really are photogenic, and looking coll and touchy - at the drawings and at the pictures. could you direct me to your snails drawings post, if there is one?

What great macros !! .. I like the pattern of the house on the first picture the most ^^ .. but the best thing is this mythology part .. it is really well done, have not known that people were putting so much meaning into snails ;)

this mythology part could be put into 3 mega posts, and there still be enough room for more! I just made a very brief resume, to indicate what's out there. when a few years ago I (quite accidentally) found out this info bit, I was quite amazed too!

thank you for fast reply, lets count it as technical problems/mis communication, and count it as this week entry :P
