coprinus comatus - growing day by day

avatar

Hola, setero! I have fresh mushroom impressions to share --

2022-sep-2531w-h.jpg

Two days ago I found in my local park a little family of Coprinus comatus, aka 'layer's wig' -- fancy autumn mushroom that I always enjoy to encounter and watch thru my camera's viewfinder.

This mushroom has many interesting qualities that I don't want to go into detail about right now. In fact, I have already met this mushroom more than once, and showed photos ... besides, I do not want to repeat myself and retell all the information that I know. I will only mention that this mushroom ages in a very spectacular way: it turns into black slime (which consists of fungal spores, this is such a reproduction mechanism).

2022-sep-2533w-h.jpg

Now I'm going to watch this Coprinus comatus family in its development, every morning on the way to the office I come to the park and take a couple of photos. Let's see what I get in the end;

2022-sep-2539w-h.jpg

...right now, I have at my disposal photos from just two days (yesterday and today).

2022-sep-2540w-h1.jpg

This mushroom had its cap damaged,-- it continues to grow. In the photo below you can see how its cap opens while it grows.

2022-sep-2540w-h2.jpg

The edge of the cap is already beginning to denature - turning into black mucus. This mucus is actually the spores of a fungus. And they can paint everything an intense black color. Several centuries ago, this mushroom was even used to make special ink.

The Family on the day two --

And a cropped version of the photo, clickable:

And that is all I have got up to date. I will continue my studies, and will take more pics. A great thing that I know what I can expect further on, in terms of the mushroom maturing.(Although, of course, the possibility cannot be ruled out that tomorrow I will come to the same place only to see the mushroom massacre - the whole family can be trampled on by some idiot or an ignorant mushroom hater who is afraid of toadstools ... or just a dog playing in the park ... every scenario is possible! but lets hope for a happy ending of my natural-philosophical experiment :)

I will add to my post two pictures from my archive, that I got back in 2021 --

That is how Coprinus Comatus family looks like. A really, really big and aging family :D

IMG_0066w-h1.jpg

This unique "feature" gave it an extra name: ink mushroom. I love watching
I really love to watch this mushroom at any stage of its life cycle - it is a purely amazing creation of Mother Nature!

The post goes for #AmazingNature Thematic Challenge. This week's theme (obviously) was: Mushrooms.. You may join the challenge too -- fungi season of 2022 is on its peak now. Thanks for walking with me - and see you next time!

A little reminder: we have fun challenge #fungifun -- share your stories and trophies, photos and recipes, contemplations and ideas. not sure about correct ID (which allows us to find out more about certain fungus)? no problem, no fear - mushrooms are full of weird charm, even staying nameless. we appreciate them any way, not only for their cooking values. join the #FungiFun!

Do you know if the mushrooms are edible?

hello there! yes, it is. this species is said to be more tasty, than champignon! but only young and fresh copies can be cooked. if you see its body turned black even a bit, it means the mushroom have passed the edible / foragible stage.

also, it has unique feature: this mushroom do not match with alcohol AT ALL. if you consume alcohol and then eat this mushroom.... they react in your blood giving you terrific consequences. !LOLZ

Hi there and yes, it is always best to eat the young mushrooms. So those ones are edible and they are tasty. Sadly I have not seen any of them here.

The last time that I had a beer was in 1999, so alcohol is not a part of my life. Youb on the other hand have that Russian Vodka and take care that you don't mix it with the eating of mushrooms !LOLZ

Haha! I am not a fan or slave of alcohol either. I do consume red wine and cognac, or whiskey from time to time, sometimes one bottle is running for a year or so. It it not a problem too -- I just mentioned that cause its an intresting fun fact. Dont count that as a caution, haha -- !LOLZ 😜

Great photos as you always have us used to and how interesting that of the "inking" feature, it may be worth to try and extract somewhat that ink and prepare it ready to print 😅

Hope things come with you and allow you to followd this report .

it may be worth to try and extract somewhat that ink and prepare it ready to print

I thought about that myself, and maybe I will beat my lazyness and will try to do it one day. As I've read -- these inks are pretty smelly, usually cloves are added to the ink to eliminate bad odors. Mushroom ink was previously used on special documents such as bills of exchange to protect them from forgery. (you can read more about this yourself, if you are interested - in a nutshell, ink consists of spores and forms a unique pattern that cannot be faked with other inks) now this method is no longer relevant .... but it would be fun to try to reproduce this old technology . that's just my laziness..... :))))

hope the life goes on well for you ... let me treat you with a !PIZZA ☘️

Thank you for entering the competition.
The mushrooms you introduced to us grow in my garden. But they have already gone through the blackening phase and only unsightly spots remain :-).

Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a picture. All I have left is an "imprint" in my memory. Maybe next season.

Отличные фото!
Узнала новое:

Several centuries ago, this mushroom was even used to make special ink.

Interesting and informative photography on this mushroom through it's life stages from young to old.

!PIZZA first through that comes to mind seeing lovely fresh fungi.

haha, really?! frankly speaking it is not exactly my case, since speaking of !PIZZA I prefer simple classic recipes, like Margarita and Quatro formaggi... but mushroom and bacon is the thing I adore in pizza very much, too. Thanks a lot for your visit, and have a nice day!

This type of fungus usually has a short life, it will grow fresh when the weather or soil is moist.
Btw, the photos are really cool looking, from different directions and each one has a different shape, because of a difference.

short life cycle, thats true. they are ephemera that is hard to shoot! at least those shrooms last for a few days, and I know some other that last for just hours, literally! so you are lucky to encounter them, or not. simple as that... !BEER

Yep that's very true, but there are also types of fungi that live longer, live longer and on average the flesh/tree is very hard.🥰🥰

🍄"Organic, natural mushroom ink" 〰️✍ 〰️
I think you could be onto a big moneymaker especially if the ink fluids are non toxic so children can use them without fear of being poisoned.

Impressive fungi photos, as always! @qwerrie
Another bonus of reading your post was to learn of a new hashtag! I'll look into it and hope to use the #FungiFun tag in a future post.

Hope all is well with you!💫
