This is a post to go with #WednesdayWalk challenge by @tattoodjay, and also for #MarketFriday challenge by @dswigle

This week I had an interesting walk to quite a special place with its long history; actually I was visiting the vinyl fair, which event took place for two days at the art space 'Nikolsky Ryads', which I remember @tatdt already presented a while ago... Now I had a reason to visit the place and look at everything myself.

2022-jun-7174w-h.jpg

'Nikolsky rows' - this is what happened to this place after the modernization of the old Nikolsky market area. Originally it was built back in 1787, at the intersection of the Griboyedov and Kryukov canals, in the market center of the city. The first floor was intended for commercial premises, the second floor contained offices and warehouses. A common covered gallery united the market, and separate sections were isolated from each other - each shop had its own exit to the courtyard and its own staircase to the second floor. It was a typical scheme for the arrangement of trading establishments of this type at that time.

Photo above: the market at the beginning of XX century.

About 100 years ago, the market lost its functions, and went through a series of role reversals. I remember in the 2000s it became a completely abandoned area, with dilapidated, crumbling buildings full of garbage. Now there are lots of cozy shops / cafes / bars / art spaces, all sorts of master classes, yoga seminars, and - voila! - even a mini-golf course.

Golf players!

2022-jun-7183w-h.jpg

The territory is enriched with all sorts of shady corners and cozy spots for privacy. Here you can buy ice cream or a cocktail or coffee, hide from the heat in a hammock with a book or a smartphone, and kill as much time as you need, with joy and pleasurable aftertaste :)

2022-jun-7189w-h.jpg

The photo does not show clearly, but this teenager has teamed up / retired with his smartphone. I can directly see the word "HAPPINESS" written in large letters on his face. (It would be better if he played active games with his classmates ... alas! ..)

2022-jun-7185w-h.jpg

Definitely, she's having some happy moments with her coffee and thoughts.

Attractive shop where you can try ice cream with Thai toppings; or maybe said toppings are not very Thai, but still delicious!

2022-jun-7191w-h.jpg

A simple strawberry milkshake, for example, costs about $6. In my opinion thats quite expensive (especially considering that a liter carton of milk costs 4 times less).

2022-jun-7177w-h.jpg

The long central aisle is occupied by pavilions-shops. There are not many of them, and I did not at all set the task of photographing them all! In the photo above you can see a nice little shop that sells ethno-style shawls and scarves made from linen, hemp, cashmere, yak wool, etc. such a stuff.

2022-jun-7178w-h.jpg

Two neighboring shops sell goods for children - all kinds of postcards, stickers, movable tattoos, soft toys, and of course books. Especially I noticed the soft toys -- and their outstanding price tags...

2022-jun-7179w-h.jpg

I was very curious why simple toys cost 7,000 and even 15,000 rubles - these figures, to put it mildly, seem overpriced: with my monthly salary, I could hardly buy 3-4 of these toys ... which is complete nonsense!

2022-jun-7180w-h.jpg

Perhaps this high price tag was formed due to an unnatural speculative difference in the exchange rate? well... in any case, these cute teddies will sit here sadly for many years, and still not find themselves a new family. Something is definitely out of whack in this world if a stuffed children's toy is worth a week's work of an adult skilled worker.

Now let me move on to the most fun part of my walk - the vinyl fair itself.

2022-jun-7271w-h.jpg

The fair did not impress me with its gigantism - in fact, about 15 shops and private collectors exhibited their stalls. But the structure of the Nikolsky market ideally suited the needs and tasks of these sellers. Each opening of the "arcade" gave shelter to one seller and his boxes of vinyl, gave shade and comfort, intimate atmosphere for visitors.

2022-jun-7282w-h.jpg

... and she gave me the opportunity from around the corner, remaining invisible, to make non-staged "live" shots with my 200mm telephoto lens. I had a lot of fun.

2022-jun-7306w-h.jpg

Two kids with ice cream unwittingly gave me a couple of interesting shots, one of which, by the way, I already posted earlier as my best shot of the day.

Another happy customer embracing their happiness (and don't forget to take a selfie for Instagram, yes!)...

Well, soon after I shot everything I wanted, @tatdt joined me, and we walked a little more ... in fact, a lot more - we got two full-fledged walks in one day! ...and here's a proof-pic for you. In the photo above I photograph the townspeople enjoying the fountains of the Summer Garden, and @tatdt photographs me in the process - copyright (c) @tatdt

Great walk @qwerrie 😁 and captures of some happy moments.
What a difference before and after the renovations. They sure gave the people a place to enjoy.
It’s crazy to see a little toy like that being priced so high. Something is wrong… even though it will be handcrafted.
Great vinyl fair, it’s always fun to walk around these kind of markets.
Have a wonderful day today and thanks for sharing 👋🏻☀️

What a difference before and after the renovations.

I think it is about 146% .... i.e. nothing was left from original building there, maybe not even a single stone. everything is new and non-historical... just of the same size / shape / color ;))))

anyway it is another good spot for the folks, not for the offices -- and thats a good thing. sadly I noticed there no !PIZZA, can you believe me? such a shame, they forgot about pizza!!!! but not me 😎

Well, you really do get around!

I will take three of those toys! Whoa!!!You know, because they are so well priced! :) I didn't notice it was a #MarketFriday! Seems like so many of the things, including the milkshakes, are made for the tourists, although there aren't enough of them right now to make a difference, is there? We don't have a lot of tourists here right now. Do you?

You took the bigger boy lens out today. It really does take some nice shots that really are incognito.

Vinyl! I love those markets! Did you get anything good there? Do me a huge favor? Drop your link on the #MarketFriday comment section here.

Thank you for being a part of #MarketFriday! I cannot tell you how pleased I am to see so many participating every week. I have learned so much about the different cultures of the world, especially the small things that go unnoticed except by those looking for them. Life is interesting, wherever you are, whatever you are doing. I hope the week has found you healthy and happy, as we all look to prosper in our way of life.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Rules of the Road to Join #MarketFriday!

  1. Go to the market, or anywhere that you pay money for a service.
    Take pictures! Be creative!
  2. Tell us a little bit about the market or the event. What brought you there? What did you buy? How much did it cost?
  3. Post the picture(s) Of course, you should tell a little bit about the ones you post
  4. Use the MarketFriday Community Platform to post #hive-196308 (this is not required, but appreciated)
    5. Drop the link into the MarketFriday comment section so I can find it
  5. Following me and reblogging the post so more see it would be appreciated !! Not a rule, just appreciated, more vision for more views on your posts!
    7. You must put #MarketFriday by @dswigle somewhere on your post

As always, please remember! #MarketFriday loves you!

Denise, dropped a link in comments section. (Sorry that I forgot doing so!.. )
answering your questions,

Seems like so many things, including the milkshakes, are made for the tourists, although there aren't enough of them right now to make a difference, is there? We don't have a lot of tourists here right now. Do you?

Well, St.Petersburg is the tourist city. I dont have statistics - after all, we are under a war that is not called the war - so, I cant tell really. Probably should be less tourists, at least the ones coming overseas. Traditionally, there are a lot of travellers coming from China - they are curious about the neighbouring Empire, tzar palaces and museums.

As for the vinyl: I did not intend to obtain anything, I do possess a little number of deluxe vinyl editions, but - dont laugh - there is no vinyl player at my home, and I definitely dont plan to get one!

But I rummaged through six boxes, just to refresh my memories "how it used to be" - and came across some very surprising things, including Yello, Nick Cave, Tom Waits. And then... I guess this is the answer to your "what did I find" question, even though I didn't buy it and take it with me: the first British press of the debut album of art-rock band Jethro Tull -- 'Stand Up'.

During the student years it was my big number one. The envelope is designed in the form of a woodcut, like the Beatles' "Revolver", its a very stylish envelope. It was a great pleasure for me to meet this old friend!

Everything is so summery, relaxed, and warm. Great reportage.

I don't collect vinyl but I think they are cool. Nice event and nice space - I didn't know about it. When my bike isn't broken :), I visit this area sometimes.
