wednesday walk at Karpovka river: watching icedrift, seagulls, angel and other encounters

This is a post to go with #WednesdayWalk challenge by @tattoodjay

I walked along the embankment of the Karpovka River - I looked at how much ice was left in the river, sneaked closer to the seagulls ... I met an angel! And, generally, did look around well.

This part of the city is not very far from my office, but far from where I live, I don't get here very often. But nevertheless, this is one of our favorite places to walk - the city's Botanical Park is located nearby, as well as our favorite coffee shop. But we won’t go to the park today, but about the coffee house... I won’t get ahead of myself :)

2023-apr-2693w-h.jpg
I was not the only one admiring the wonderful views of drifting ice - a flock of gulls did it with me.

2023-apr-2703w-h.jpg
And one of them even agreed to pose for me a little!

2023-apr-2730w-h.jpg

However, she did not lose her caution and let me in no closer than one and a half meters. Yes, I forgot to tell you: going for a walk, I put two lenses in my backpack: a wide-angle 16-35, and a telephoto 70-200mm. If it weren't for this step... I wouldn't have been able to capture either the portrait of the seagull or close views of the ice.
This is the closest distance I was allowed to approach (capture made with 200mm). On the left: cropped and unresized image. Now you can look into her eyes!

Ice...

2023-apr-2774w-h.jpg
Ruined ice palaces, whole walls and small details, individual bricks and fragments... endless variety! besides, it is not silent: when there is a lot of ice, the ice floes collide with each other, rub and make interesting crystal sounds.

Trivia, but a pleasurable and meditative sight for your eyes.

2023-apr-1946w-h1.jpg
Especially with sea gulls animating it!

In the beginning of the story I promised you an angel, right? here we go:

2023-apr-2716w-h1.jpg

This encounter was unexpected -- and a bit sad. There exist many different monuments at St.Petersburg, and I would say that among other things, town habitants especially adore lions and angels ... both of which are especially common. I will definitely tell you the story about lions -- some other day, when I get inspired for a long post. As for this one... its author is theater artist Roman Shustrov. He populated the city with a dozen of wonderful angels; he died in May 2020 in the midst of the coronovirus bacchanalia, and this mournful angel is dedicated to the memory of all the doctors who died struggling this pandemic...

And here is a photo of the artist himself, along with his another famous angel
(this photo was not taken by me, the source:

Just in case, for the city visitors willing to see him, I tell where you can find him: he sits on a bench at the Medikov Avenue and the embankment of the Karpovka River crossing.

Further on, I found myself at the playground, and immediately took selfie in one of these polished metal balls.

2023-apr-2762w-h2.jpg
I'm not completely sure that are designed exactly for this ... anyway, the selfie turned out to be interesting, but you will hardly be able to see my portrait!

2023-apr-2763w-h.jpg
Said playground had an interesting swing - with a thick rope as a seat, designed for several people to use it at once; not only children, but also adults were willing to have fun on such swings!

2023-apr-2770w-h.jpg

Very funny thing! never saw one like this before. And it had this fantastic shadow, reminding me of some giant snake.

And at this point our tired feet said 'enough', my companion and I headed to the coffee shop located not too far from this area. Actually, we planned in advance to visit this coffee shop (which we consider one of the most pleasant places in the city, that's exactly why we found ourselves at the Karpovka embankment...)

2023-apr-2845w-h.jpg
It's a spacious place, it occupies two floors of a cool industrial loft... but that's a completely different story! In the meantime, let me tease you 😋 with my cup of capuccino.

Thanks for walking with me, see you next time!

Beautiful pose of seagulls, they seem to know that you are carrying a camera, they are very cool and tiny.

Very attractive creatures! tho can be annoying too. Some places have the rules that ban seagulls' feeding. you know? 😂😂😘 glad you like the visuals, and thanx for the visit. a bit of !BEER to accompany this Wednesday!

In this photo you seen not a municipal janitor, but an ordinary city dweller! who has to clear the street of snow in order to dig out his own car :)

I've never seen seagulls live, they're annoying, oh I just found out.😂😂
There are some snow vibes like this that make you happy and some that are upsetting like in this photo.😆🥰

An angel I saw floating over the icy waters, breaking into Spring a joy.

Friendly little statue on the chair most unusual, lovely informative walk around town.

Joan, I cannot but agree -- this artist inhabited our city with very unusual, beautiful, sad angels, this reading one is 'best of the best'. thank you for walking with me, hope you enjoyed the visuals. Thanks for the tipu ☘️ and of course a hot Hive !PIZZA back 🍕🍕🍕

Little surprises around a city like this make it charming to be on the lookout for more. Sad to learn no more will be appearing in the future, lovely photo find of him on the bench with one of his little angels.

That's a very nice place. The cleanliness there is very well maintained.

Ehehe... uhm... thats not very correct statement, a lot of citydwellers would not agree with it, especially not in the winter with all the snow on the streets and. especially, on the roads 🤓 but I like your comment anyway. 🙏 In spring, after the snow have melted, everything looks clean and fresh and shiny ☘️ even the air!

I find it kind of calming watching ice floating like that
The angel is cool but a touching and sad story behind it

Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk, its my pleasure to host it and see all the posts each week from all around the world, including yours, if you have time visit some of the other walks this week there are so many interesting ones

Now I know most only post once a week using the Wednesday walk tag or community and I truly appreciate that and love visiting the posts so for most of you you can ignore the next sentence

I try and be nice and let people know via a comment to only post once a week, but some just abuse it and to me spam multiple posts a week, after asking nicely a few times and being ignored, this morning I regrettably had to mute a couple of people who were spamming the Wednesday walk tag

Thanks, glad you like the visuals. Let me treat you with the !BEER, and I promise not to abuse @wednesdaywalk tag -- as it is really one of my fave challenges at Hive, you know (even tho I dont join it every week). 🙏

Dont worry I know you do not abuse it, and probably didnt need to add it as the ones who abuse it probably wont read my comment LOL

Cheers and !BEER

It must be the angels, but your post made me smile 😍
Lovely scenes, beautifully captured. The swing looks like a stretched shih tzu:)

shih tzu? intresting, whats that?

glad you like the visuals!.... it was a perfect spring walk across the cleansed shiny city, that ended at a perfect coffee place... probably I am missing this week's challenge, had no time to put it down in a decent blog (and, voyla: now I remember not to add any pizza to my comments that I address you!) ☘️

I know that giving pizza tokens is your trademark. You've always done that 😍 😆

ps. this swing was sufficiently wider and bigger than shih tzu :D
anyway, thats a nice (and unusual) association 👍

The place is very nice, I especially liked the swing I would love to ride it for a while. We adults need those spaces to play too. The angel sculptures were also my favorite, they look great. Nice walk, nice pictures. Oh and best to end up in such a beautiful place for coffee. Cheers!
