Cycling across historical center of St.Petersburg

This is a post to go with #WednesdayWalk challenge by @tattoodjay

Yesterday's weather turned out to be an exception in a string of cloudy, rainy, cold days - the sun kissed the townspeople, and I took advantage of this for a big bike ride to the city center. In fact, I had an important business - buying an audio cable (I need a 3.5 jack to 2 RCA adapter to connect the amplifier to the computer) ... anyway, I took a camera with me just in case - and did not in vain! The meeting broke down, we could not contact - such a banality! - due to a dead phone).

Well, since I was already in the center, I parked my bike and decided to take a walk and take pictures of my favorite genre - street. Unfortunately, cycling and photography don't go well together, but when the bike is stationary and I'm walking apart from it, everything is great! The evening was warm, I was in no hurry, and the walk lasted two hours: from Sennaya Square along Grivtsova Lane, the embankment of the Moika River, to St. Isaac's Square and back.

St. Isaac's Square is located in a fashionable area of the city, named after the cathedral of the same name; it is a visiting card and one of the most fashionable tourist-oriented places.

#img #srs

Suffice it to say that in addition to St. Isaac's Cathedral, the perimeter of the square is decorated with the historical hotels "Angleterre" and "Astoria" (the latter in 2007 was included in the list of the most romantic hotels in the world compiled by Forbes magazine), the Horse Guards Manege (various exhibitions are held here), a monument to the emperor Nicholas I, Mariinsky Palace (currently the seat of the Legislative Assembly of the city). The cathedral itself is not only a museum, but also the best viewing platform for contemplating the urban landscape - its height is 100 meters, in the imperial era it was the tallest building in the city, all views of the city were equal to it, it was forbidden to build higher).

The square in front of the cathedral is a wonderful place for the townspeople to walk, as well as a favorite spot for photo shoots overlooking a beautiful historical place. No wonder that while I was circling around the square, I met three weddings, more precisely, three wedding couples escorted by photographers :)

2023-jul-8456w-h.jpg

You can see a wedding pair in the frame, posing to photographer. They did at least 4 takes crossing that spot, while I was around :P

2023-jul-8555w-h.jpg

2023-jul-8624w-h.jpg

The photographer gives away valuable instructions to his wedding victims, describing the script they should perform. Photos will be completely staged... and that is also a good, legit genre!

2023-jul-8628w-h.jpg

Well, as for me I prefer #reportage and #streetphoto, even some spying on folks and their activities, sometimes even from the back, as you see here. Those who claim that street photography is possible without the eye contact are absolutely right! And what is your opinion on this issue?

2023-jul-8470w-h.jpg

This is not a great photo - overexposed, and taken contra-light :) but it gives you overall impression of how huge it is...
On the left in this frame - a piece of the little garden in front of the Mariinsky Palace, on the right - a slice of Astoria Hotel.

2023-jul-8568w-h.jpg

Here, everything is located on the daily basis and the largest parking lot of royal and baronial carriages (ok, I did not compare, perhaps there is even more parking on the palace square).

2023-jul-8570w-h.jpg

If you want to see a live horse, or ride in a carriage among the traffic, or your desire is more modest - just take a couple of photos - on this square your wish will certainly come true ... I think that even on a rainy day :)

2023-jul-8573w-h.jpg

The flowers baskets are everywhere; walkers enjoy the blooming season on its peak, and cant pass by without taking a selfie. 😎

2023-jul-8577w-h1.jpg

Tourist-attractive spots are usually "served" by such costumed people who are trained to lure tourists into a photo session (which naturally monetizes in their favor). They usually don't stick to folks with big cameras (like me) - they feel that we are their natural rivals :) besides that, I simply don't smell with a lot of money...

2023-jul-8577w-h2.jpg

When I arrived, they were already leaving - probably, their "working hours" might have come to the end; otherwise I would have taken more photos. I love to see such costumed re-enactment of history on the streets of the city, I am a big fan (especially when it does not cost me!).

2023-jul-8589w-h.jpg

Access to the lawn is open, and the lawn does not stay empty. People lie down on the grass, chat, smoke, listen to the music, read books, drink their drinks, draw sketches, have fun, and of course take a lot of pictures...

2023-jul-8592w-h.jpg

...especially the wedding pairs, as I've mentioned above.

2023-jul-8603w-h.jpg

If I will not forget I will include this “happy click” in my best shots of 2023 list. I have captured a luxurious moment of life here, isn't it? This pair have forgot that there is a war going on, a war between rich and poor, between black and white, between those who know there is a war and between those who dont...

2023-jul-8608w-h.jpg

Some sparrows frolicked next to the roses; I very rarely have captures that combine in one frame both birds and flowers - so I tried to take a few close-ups, but didn’t particularly succeed - yes, 200mm is not 500mm, simply does not rank, and besides that these sparrows did not want to let me get closer, and generally had a strange craving for changing places. :)

2023-jul-8616w-h.jpg

And it turned out I was not the only observer! look whom I noticed on a tree, hiding in the shadows... (but without a camera, actually, like me).

2023-jul-8645w-h.jpg

At the opposite end of the square - next to the Mariinsky Palace - there is another spot, a tiny mini-garden perfectly adapted for all the usual evening needs of city habitants: bench-sitting with a beer or other drink, smoking, chatting, and of course taking selfies.

2023-jul-8643w-h.jpg

By the time I got there, it was already covered with a shadow from the late setting sun, which of course did not contribute to warm and sunny photographs. But I still took a few shots for the report. I don't remember when this garden appeared here, but it didn't exist before. Yes, the city changes with every decade, year, and even day. This happens gradually ... and every day a simple reporting trivia, as the present sinks into the past, becomes more and more valuable. Let me round up at this note. 🤗

location: St.Petersburg, Russia July 2023 natural light
camera/lens: Canon 5D 70-200mm raw-conv

Thanks for walking with me, hope you enjoyed all the summer life and architectural visuals. See you next time!

Thank you! Hard to ride in the historical center of an old city :D
I prefer not to do that very often, haha! !BEER

Cities are often hard for cyclists. Although here in The Netherlands we have quite some city centers where cars aren't allowed.

Thats gorgeous! We have only 2 (pretty little) dedicated cycling routs thru all the big city, can you imagine that? such a shame. !BEER

Pretty pleasurable video. I've seen the photos of bikes near railway station - that does impress indeed.
And this:

Bikes seem to take over the cars completely and thats a good thing. Extremely benefittable to their health, I think.

A question: what happens on a rainy days? I avoid cycling when the sky is open and send us flood (which happens pretty often in my city). If cycling becomes the only possible, available, accepted system and cars are excluded from it - can it work 365 days a year? ... this is an important question.

I see a lot of those 'bakfietsen' filled with 2, 3 or even 4 kids. Nowadays they are often e-bikes.

The Netherlands is also infamous for the frequency that it rains. But it actually only rains 6 or 7% of the time.
When it rains more people take the car or public transport. Because of that you get even more traffic jams, so you're often faster by bike.
The die hards cycle through wind and rain and have either a poncho or a rain suite.

regenpak_full.jpg

I actually hate them because they really make you sweat. We have a shower at our office so I always take my clothes in a waterproof backpack with me and take a shower when I arrive at the office. That is quite a luxury by the way although I hear more offices install showers for employees that commute by bike.

Nice to know that there's still a horse with carriage in that place.Like in our country ,there's still a place who did'nt face out that kind of transportation.

that street photography is possible without the eye contact

Absolutely. (As you and I have mentioned before on your blog) eye contact may lead to not such a pleasant encounter.

This is an amazing view of a city (mostly of people) that I would never get a chance to see otherwise. I loved the child in a tree--another kind of bird :)

Two hours. You filled them with some wonderful images.

I myself am very fond of riding a bicycle. It has many benefits. It also keeps a person healthy and the way we see it makes every place more beautiful. When the weather is like this, there are a few clouds and a cool breeze, it is a lot of fun. All these pictures are amazing but second picture is my favourite in your photography.

I feel the same way. Cycling is not 'driving forward' the consumption-based economy, but in all the rest fields, it benefits the bike user solidly.

Thanks for choosing your favorite picture. The 2-nd one is drone picture, it was not mine ;) !BEER

Warmly welcome! St.Petersburg is a tourist-friendly city. May to June is ideal period for visiting it (due to the weather and 'white nights').

Wedding victims, a saying I have said myself many a time LOL

great street shots I am not very comfortable with taking photos of people so I go out of my way to avoid eye contact so the odd time I take shots of people it is often of their backs

Thanks for joining the Wednesday Walk :)

Right, I missed visiting St.Petersburg. Ut was actually almost on my travel plans some 5-6 years at I. Together with a friend. It is not far away from Southern Norway. Also I have a sister and brother in law who were there some years ego. They did say it is one of the most beautiful cities they have seen.

Not a big mistake -- considering how many other cool places you've nailed, right?
!BEER
ps. it is nice, have the vibe, have a compact historical center almost intact.
I cant compare with other places.... I think that Venice is better :)
but one good place doesn't have objections about another good one, right?

No doubt! Very cool treasury of art. And it takes more than one day to explore it neatly. I.e. it may be time consuming and mentally hard, to embrace and watch all that is out there! And also, important for me: the crowd. Imagine how many folks are heading there. I hate crowds, and like water I am just flowing into a free direction, hehe. Sort of. I hope I explained my position correctly. !BEER

I can imagine it is time consuming...But what I have seen from photos, it's worth it.. I can see what you mean about crowds .. I am definitly on your side ..I try to avoid the crowds..getting up early, before the turist buses arrive...

Ha! when you arrive to Hermitage Museum (Wintertime palace) early in the morning... surprise! there is a 1-hour crowd or so even before its opening xD

Haha...not a good idea then...

technically speaking, I think that there is a big difference between me (solo visitor) and a tourists bus. there s a planned visit, tickets booked before hand, bus passengers arrive at arranged time and dont suffer from the crowd entertainment, I consider so.

Funny fact: once I've found on a street a plastic card, it belong to some frenchman, it was 'A Hermitage friends club' member card. Said cardholder had the legit right to enter Hermitage any day without tickets and crowd-standing - and more importantly, he could have up to 5 friends entering with him. So there exist different kinds of deals, I suppose, for tourists / foreign visitors. Which is a nice thing. Lets share a !PIZZA, and I hope one day you will see Russian emperor's palace and museums of the city.

I especially enjoyed the photos of the wedding couples posing for their photographers. It's always interesting to see how people choose to represent themselves on their wedding day, and the photos you took capture the excitement and anticipation of the moment.

You did a great job of capturing the atmosphere of St. Isaac's Square, and I learned a lot about the history of the area. Thank you for sharing your work with us!
