All of this is my fault - Fiction Short Story

On a silent night, I shed tears. This pain is so intense. I was hurt inside. I wanted to scream but couldn't. Regret is useless, for it is too late.

Last August 25th, my wife and I fought due to difficult economic factors. I have been laid off from work by my boss due to the impact of covid-19. I am unemployed and find it difficult to find work. I tried to be an online taxi driver, but my income was not as much as when I worked for the company.

I understand that my wife needs money to shop and buy jewellery, but my current circumstances have not been able to make her happy. I work day and night, but the results I get have not been able to make my wife happy.

It was a disaster for me when a businessman got to know my wife. No, they're not having an affair. But my wife went into their business world. Over time, my wife's business went well. She can earn a lot of money and can buy what she wants.

Money had darkened her heart, now she was no longer like the woman I knew. All day and all night, the phone is always in her hand. No more time to be together, no more love for her child. She was comfortable with her business as well as her colleagues.

Until one night, I heard from behind the walls of the room. My wife will meet her business partner somewhere. I try to think positively. Yes, they did meet for a business transaction which she did.

The next day, I happened to drop off a guy who ordered my taxi online. I dropped him off at a cafe. I was surprised to see my wife in the cafe alone. I think that she also has the right to indulge herself in enjoying the food she wants at the cafe.

Not long after, the man I had just escorted to the cafe walked towards my wife. I watched them in the taxi car, and although jealousy and suspicion arose in my chest, I still held it in. I wasn't still in the car because I didn't want to spoil their mood.

They look so familiar. I've never seen my wife so happy. For some reason, my chest feels so tight. I find it hard to breathe. Trying my best to take a deep breath and calm myself down. I couldn't afford it and went home.

At home, I immediately hugged my five-year-old daughter. I took my daughter to play so I could forget what happened to me just now. In the afternoon, my wife came home with some things she bought along with some cute dolls for my daughter.

I wanted to ask about the man she met at the cafe, but my lips couldn't say a word. I tried to be strong, but my heart was crying. I took another deep breath to calm myself down again. I went out to the terrace of the house and burned a cigarette.

While sitting quietly, my wife came over and asked "why do you look so gloomy?"

"It's okay, I'm fine" I replied.

"If there's something you want, just tell me. I'll buy it" my wife said.

"No, I don't want anything" I replied.

A cell phone rings from inside the house. It's my wife's. She came into the room and chatted for 20 minutes. She said that the one who just called her was her business partner. Then I tried to ask about the man who was at the cafe this afternoon. She replied that they were just business associates and met only for business.

Then I asked deeper, but the questions I threw at her made her angry. We had a bit of a fight then. With anger and annoyance, she left the house in a hurry. I don't know where she's going.

When I try to calm her down, she's still stubborn. She ran towards the north. While crossing, a high-speed car came towards her so something I didn't want to happen. My wife died on that road.

This is all my fault. If only I had stayed at the company and could give her money, this probably wouldn't have happened. All I can do is weep for her passing.
