Drive My Car!

All of our happy moments resemble one another, but each of our sorrows is unhappy in its own way. The person you're sharing your sorrow with never fully feels your pain. That's why we try to keep the taste of our sadness in our own pocket. And through this journey, the sorrow started to pile up. It piled up really big, which shut us down in expressing ourselves. Gradually, we started to forget who we really are, and the purpose of our life started getting blurred.

But what can happen if your destiny is designed to meet someone who tries to feel and connect with your sadness? Where you can get empathy and love, hoping for nothing in return. I think that will strengthen you to survive well for your upcoming days.

This wonderful movie gave me these vibes, which taught me how to survive. I want to praise the screenwriter the most. Each and every dialogue is so neat and precisely written that you won't get a chance to feel bored in this three-hour-long movie. It's about the life of a theater director who gets a task directing a production house in Hiroshima, which is far away from his hometown. A young girl was assigned as his driver, and through each other's support, they gradually get to know their inner selves, bring out their harsh truth and that helps to create a father-child bond among them.

To be honest, this film helps me to love the Japanese works even more. The cast group is so powerful that you can feel all their emotions just by looking into their eyes without any dialogues.

I know the length of the movie may hold you back from giving it a chance, but I can assure you, once you're able to enter the character's doubt, fear, and unsettled past, you'll easily emerge into the story and learn how he survived with his sorrow. It taught me that if you want to feel someone's love, you need to understand yourself first. You can only fully achieve others' love if you know yourself.

The outstanding characters, their dialogues, and the taste of driving a car amidst the natural beauty of Hiroshima, everything will be able to take you to a whole new level. And all these things helped the movie to win the Best International Feature Film in 2022.

The ending symbolizes how one can let go of something that is very dear to us and how we can come out from our past attachment and live our life without those things. This movie ends with this dialogue that will be with me for the rest of my life, and it goes something like this,

Those who survive keep thinking about the dead,

in one way or another,

and that will continue.

But we must keep living on!

It is a pleasure to find a critical review so well written and with such a careful appreciation of the thematic aspects of the film. Greetings, @rafa-noor.
