New grow bags for my terrace garden

avatar

The weather is starting to get hot here and I know this may not be the right time to do gardening or plant anything new. But there are some people who still do it and reap the vegetables before the peak summer starts. That's my intention too.

Our government is offering terrace garden kit for a very cheap price and i always wanted to buy that. Last month I got a chance to purchase two set of the kit. It will usually have 6 grow bags and coco pit. I had to do the mixing with vermicompost and mud.

I also selected some dry leaves to cover the grow bag surface. This way the moisture would be inside the grow bag and the mix would be good to go. I kept it like this for nearly half a month and later I started planting the seeds.

It usually takes a few days to get settled down before we can plant something. I let it stay like that for as long as it was needed. It is almost like a two months process. Next choosing the right seed is important. In our place they do give us seeds along with the government package but they are all genetically modified seed. It is hard to get organic seed.

It is very important that we choose organic seed because we are getting many health problems because of the chemicals that are being used for the crops. Homesteading is a way to prevent all such things. I'm glad that at least we have some option here to get organic seeds. In my opinion GM seeds are a bit dangerous as we don't know the full consequences.

I had to do the mixing step by step because I had 6 grow bags that I had to fill and the quantity of mud I had for mixing was less. Then I got the mud from my backyard and filled the bags.

There is a nearby market from where I can purchase the seeds. I bought them for 10 Rs per pack that had around 20 seeds in that. I bought ladies finger seeds and brinjal seeds.

The mix is ready and the bags are now good for planting the seeds. I will cover my planting experience in the next article.

Are these bags eco?
I can see it's really for planting fruits and vegetables. Nice initiative to your government. ☺️

I guess it is made of Polypropylene which can be recycled but not 100% eco friendly I guess. Yeah it is light weight and suitable for small vegetable gardens in roof top.
