GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

Its scientific name is Anthurium scherzerianum, and it is popularly known by different names: flamingo flower, coleta, anthurium, tail flower, cock's comb, bull's head, pinto's palette and painted tongue, among others. All of them inspired by the peculiar shape of its leaves, flowers and the striking central spike (Spadice).
Su nombre científico es Anthurium scherzerianum, se les conoce popularmente con diferentes nombres: flor de flamenco, coleta, anturio, flor de cola, peine de gallo, cabeza de toro, paleta del pinto y lengua pintada entre otros. Todos ellos inspirados en la peculiar forma de sus hojas, flores y lo llamativo de su espiga central (espádice).
This herbaceous, perennial plant, native to the tropical forests of South America, is widely used as an ornamental plant and its cut flowers are highly valued for decoration as they retain their beauty for several days.
Esta planta herbácea, perenne oriunda de los bosques tropicales de américa del sur, es utilizada ampliamente como planta ornamental y sus flores cortadas son muy apreciadas para la decoración por conservar su belleza durante varios días.
Anthurium flowers are very beautiful, elegant and stylish. The most common colours are white, pink, red and green.
Las flores de Anthurium son muy hermosas, elegantes y estilizadas. Sus colores más frecuentes son blanco, rosa, rojo y verde.

Its flower is actually a spathe or modified leaf, with an inner spike (Spadice ) that can reach 8 to 12 cm in length, white or yellowish in colour, very showy, covered with tiny flowers, with inflorescence. To appreciate them you have to see them very closely as shown in the photos below, and they are considered the flowers of the plant.
Sus flores son en realidad una espata u hoja modificada, con una espiga interior (espádice) que puede alcanzar de 8 a 12 cm de longitud de color blanco o amarillento, muy llamativa recubierta por diminutas flores, con inflorescencia. Para apreciarlas hay que verlas muy de cerca como se muestra en las fotos a continuación, y son consideradas flores de la planta.

The leaves are large, outstanding for their size, approximately 20 cm long and 3.5 cm wide.
Por su parte, las hojas son grandes, resaltan por su tamaño, aproximadamente 20 cm de largo y 3.5 cm de ancho.
The colour is intense green, lustrous, oval or heart-shaped, with smooth edges. They grow erect, alternately, sometimes they look as if they were artificial because of their brightness and texture.
El color es verde intenso, brillante en forma ovalada o de corazón, con bordes lisos. Crecen erguidas, de forma alternas, en ocasiones parecen que fueran artificiales por su brillo y textura.

The characteristics of the leaves of this plant make it very attractive and it shares with the flowers its ornamental role.

CARE OF THE PLANT

So that the Anthurium can delight us with its beauty all year long, it is necessary to consider some recommendations among which the following stand out:
Para que el Anthurium, nos deleite con su belleza todo el año, es necesario considerar algunas recomendaciones entre las cuales destacan las siguientes:
1.-) Su riego debe ser moderado, cada dos (2) o tres (3) días, manteniendo la humedad necesaria, y cuidando de no mojar sus flores.
1.-) Watering should be moderate, every two (2) or three (3) days, maintaining the necessary humidity and taking care not to wet the flowers.
2.-) Semi-direct sunlight or very good illumination for it to show its flowers.
2.-) Incidencia solar semidirecta o muy buena iluminación para que nos ofrezca sus flores todo el año.
3.-) Direct sunlight burns its leaves and flowers.
3.-) La incidencia directa de sol quema sus hojas y flores.
4.-) Very ventilated places are not recommended, because it causes the leaves and flowers to wither, dry out and tear. <
4.-) No son recomendable los lugares muy ventilados, porque ocasiona que se marchite, resequen y rasguen las hojas y flores.
5.-) It requires pruning of the dried leaves and flowers, taking care not to do it too close to the stem and with the appropriate tools.
5.-) Requiere poda de las hojas y flores secas, teniendo cuidado de hacerlo no muy cercano al tallo y con las herramientas adecuadas.

IMPORTANT PROPERTIES

In addition to the symbolism given by the popular imagination to the Anthurium flower, related to happiness, hospitality and abundance, as well as its possible aphrodisiac attributes and increase in female fertility, there is a very relevant property of this plant that is important to highlight and is little mentioned, its capacity to biodepurate the air, which is being studied for its better and greater use.
Adicionalmente al simbolismo dado por el imaginario popular a la flor Anthurium, relacionada con la felicidad, hospitalidad y abundancia, así como también sus posibles atributos afrodisíacos e incremento de la fertilidad femenina, hay una propiedad muy relevante de esta planta que es importante destacar y se menciona poco, su capacidad de biodepuración del aire, lo cual está siendo objeto de estudio para su mejor y mayor uso.
Considering the increasing levels of pollution at local and global level, it is a very important contribution that can be obtained from these plants, it would represent a natural option to help reduce the impacts of air pollution, available to many people.
Considerando los niveles crecientes de contaminación a nivel local y global, es un aporte muy importancia que se puede obtener de estas plantas, representaría una opción natural para contribuir a disminuir los impactos de la contaminación del aire, al alcance de muchas personas.
