Again sharing with you topics of socio-environmental relevance, on this occasion, the so-called Electronic Waste, E Waste or also known as WEEE for its acronym in english: waste electrical and electronic equipment, which is what is the one used in this post

Nuevamente compartiendo con ustedes temas de pertinencia socioambiental, en esta ocasión, los llamados Residuos Electrónicos o también denominados, RAEE por sus siglas en español: residuos de aparatos eléctricos y electrónicos, que es la que utilizo en este post.
To begin with, please I exhort you todo a quick review of the electronic devices and equipment you use on a daily basis
Para iniciar, por favor los exhorto a realizar una revisión rápida de los aparatos y equipos electrónicos que utilizan a diario.
Lamentably, there are usually more of them than we estimate, i.e. we all generate this type of waste to a greater or lesser extent, figure 1.
Lamentablemente, suelen ser más de lo que estimamos, es decir todos generamos en mayor o menor medida este tipo de desechos, figura 1.

Another simple and compelling example is the televisions and monitors that have been replaced by "flat screen" models as part of technological progress.
Otro sencillo y convincente ejemplo son los televisores y monitores que han sido sustitutos, por los modelos “pantalla plana”, como parte del avance tecnológico.
They can still be found in homes and offices piled up awaiting their final fate, some still with some useful life left, others non-operational
Todavía se pueden encontrar en hogares y oficinas apilados en espera de su destino final, algunos todavía con un poco de vida útil, otro no operativos.
Similar is the situation with mobile phones, which are evolving more rapidly, driven by the technological implications of using the latest model (figure 2).

Similar situación sucede con los teléfonos celulares, de evolución más acelerada, impulsada por las implicaciones tecnológicas que le otorgan al uso del modelo más reciente (figura 2).

This is part of the reason for the progressive increase in the annual amount of WEEE in the world. In 2019 approximately 53.6 million tonnes were generated, only 17.4% was recycled, according to the Global E-waste Observatory report (Forti, Balde, Kuehr, 2020), maintaining an increasing trend in previous years.
Esto es parte de las razones del progresivo aumento de la cantidad anual de RAEE en el mundo. En el 2019 aproximadamente se generó 53,6 millones toneladas, sólo el 17,4% fue reciclada, según el informe del Observatorio Mundial de los Residuos Electrónicos (Forti, Balde, Kuehr, 2020), manteniéndose la tendencia creciente de los años anteriores.
To this must be added the toxicity of mercury, lead and cadmium which generally come from electronic equipment and/or their batteries, as well as others use refrigerants, and are dangerous if they are not disposed of and/or processed properly.
A esto hay que añadir que la toxicidad del mercurio, plomo y cadmio que forman parten generalmente de los equipos electrónicos y/o de sus baterías, así como otros utilizan refrigerantes, siendo peligrosos si no tienen una disposición y/o procesamiento adecuado.

When this happens, they usually end up in landfills producing short and medium term impacts on soils, water, air, and living beings (figure 3), being exposed to the elements or being burned.
Cuando esto sucede, suelen terminar en vertederos de basura produciendo impactos a corto y mediano plazo en los suelos, agua, aire, y los seres vivos (figura 3), estar expuesto a la intemperie o ser quemados.
Therefore, it is necessary to go deeper into the definition of WEEE, its classification, statistics and suggested actions to tackle this complex problem and its impacts.
Por lo anteriormente indicado, es necesario profundizar con relación a la definición de RAEE su clasificación, estadísticas y acciones sugeridas para afrontar esta compleja problemática y sus impactos.

What is and how is it categorized WEEE?

¿Qué es y cómo se clasifican los RAEE?

There are various definitions, the one I consider most versatile and conducive is the one contained in the report A New Circular Vision for Electronics.Time for a Global Reboot (2019) expressed in the following terms.

Hay diversas definiciones, la que considero más versátil y propicia es la contenida en el informe A New Circular Vision for Electronics.Time for a Global Reboot (2019) expresada en los siguientes términos:

“Anything with a plug, electric cordor battery (including electrical and electronic equipment) from toasters to toothbrushes, smartphones, fridges, laptops and LED televisions that has reached the end of its
life, as well as the components that make up these end of-life products.”

“ Son cualquier cosa con un enchufe, cable eléctrico o batería (incluyendo equipos eléctricos y electrónicos) desde tostadoras a cepillos de dientes, smartphones, frigoríficos ordenadores portátiles y televisores LED que han llegado al final de su vida útil, así como lo componentes que lo conforman estos productos al final de su vida útil.”

As can be seen, this definition includes fundamental terms such as "end of life" and "component parts", batteries and accessories among others, leaving open the options for final disposal, which in principle may or may not be defined.

Como se aprecia esta definición incluye términos fundamentales como “final de la vida útil” y “componentes que lo integran” , pilas y accesorios entre otros, dejando abierta las opciones de la disposición final, la cual en principio pueden estar definida o no.

I make this clarification, because in some definitions of WEEE, the possibility of repair or donation is considered, although these are valid options, the focus of this publication is on e-waste suitable for recycling or reuse of its parts.
Hago esta aclaratoria, porque en algunas definiciones de RAEE, se considera la posibilidad de repararlos o donarlo, si bien son opciones válidas, el centro de atención de esta publicación son los residuos electrónicos aptos para el reciclaje o reutilización de sus partes.

In this regard, it is important to note that WEEE is classified according to its functions, type of materials (ferrous, non-ferrous, precious metals, glass, plastics, contaminants), weight, components and end-of-life characteristics.

En este sentido, es importante destacar que los RAEE se clasifican de acuerdo a sus funciones, tipo de materiales (ferrosos, no ferrosos, metales preciosos, vidrios, plásticos, contaminantes), peso, componentes que lo conforman, y características al final de su ciclo de vida.
The Table 1, shows the 6 categories, based on their waste management, according to (Forti, Baldé and Kuehr, 2020).

En la tabla 1, se muestran las 6 categorías, en base a la gestión de sus residuos, según (Forti, Baldé y Kuehr, 2020).

As you can appreciate the variety of electronic equipment is quite wide and is part of daily activities in various representations and versions, being used in households and activities in the public and private sectors around the world, hence the stealthy avalanche that represents its disposal at the end of its useful life.
Como pueden apreciar la variedad de equipos electrónicos es bastante amplia y forman parte de las actividades diarias en diversas representaciones y versiones, siendo usadas en los hogares y actividades de los sectores públicos y privadas en el mundo, de ahí la avalancha sigilosa que representa su disposición al final de su vida útil.

The decades-long trend of increasing use of electronic equipment will continue for some time to come.
La tendencia creciente del uso de equipos electrónicos, desde hace varias décadas continuara por más tiempo.
This is not surprising based on the increased number of users and intensive use of electronic resources for online or virtual activities in telework, education, health services, administrative procedures in the public and private sector since 2020 by Covid 19.
Esto no es sorpresivo basado en la mayor cantidad de usuarios y uso intensivo de recursos electrónicos para actividades online o virtuales en el teletrabajo, educación, servicios de salud, gestiones administrativas en el sector público y privado desde 2020 por el Covid 19.
This reconfirms a scenario where WEEE will increase substantially, due to the increased amount of equipment in operation, with finite lifetime. The sources consulted coincide in this assessment, which is expressed in figure 4.

Esto confirma un escenario donde se incrementará sustancialmente los RAEE, debido a la mayor cantidad de equipos funcionando, con vida útil finita. Las fuentes consultadas coinciden en esta apreciación, esto es expresado en la figura 4.

As can be seen in Figure 4, by 2021, 52 million tonnes of WEEE were estimated worldwide and by 2050 the predicted figure is 120 million tonnes, to which must be added the reasons mentioned above.
Como se aprecia en la figura 4, para el 2021 se estimaron 52 millones de toneladas de RAEE a nivel mundial y para el 2050 la cifra se espera alcance 120 millones de toneladas, a lo cual hay que sumar las razones antes señaladas.
For their part (Forti, Balde, Kuehr, 2020), they also highlight the growing trend for 2030, projecting 74.7 million tonnes for that year and pointing out that other factors to consider are the "short life cycles" and few maintenance or repair options, i.e. sometimes it is easier or cheaper to buy than to repair.
Por su parte (Forti, Balde, Kuehr, 2020), destaca también la tendencia creciente para el 2030 pronosticando 74,7 millones de toneladas para ese año y señalando que otros factores a considerar son los “cortos ciclos de vida” y pocas opciones de mantenimiento o reparación, es decir en ocasiones es más fácil o barato comprar que reparar.
In order of volume generated in millions of tonnes of WEEE by 2019, the top three places went to: Asia (24.9), the Americas(13.1) and Europe (12).
En orden del volumen generado en millones de toneladas de RAEE para el 2019, los tres primeros lugares fueron para: Asia (24,9), América(13,1) y Europa (12).

The magnitude of the WEEE problem is complex due to the growing trend of its generation and diversity, as well as the different interests of the parties involved, both public and private, in terms of achievable short, medium and long term goals.
La magnitud del problema de los RAEE, es sin lugar a dudas complejo por la tendencia creciente de su generación y diversidad, así como también por los distintos intereses de las partes involucradas, tanto públicas como privadas, en términos de metas alcanzables en corto, mediano y largo plazo.
The gap between the amount generated and recycled and its current and potential socio-environmental impacts, locally and globally, needs to be addressed with the necessary priority.
La brecha entre la cantidad generada y reciclada y sus impactos socioambientales actuales y potenciales, a nivel local y global, requieren ser atendidos con la prioridad necesaria
Public policies and regulations in the legal context are indispensable to address this, together with their implementation, including responsible disposal and end-of-life reuse.
Las políticas públicas y regulaciones en el contexto legal son indispensable para afrontarlo, conjuntamente con su puesta en práctica, en la que se incluya la disposición responsable y reutilización al final de la vida útil.
Even though it is true that some countries have made progress on this issue, there is still much to be done, particularly in the application of collection and processing procedures, due to the risks involved in their informal storage and handling without complying with the necessary protection requirements.
Si bien es cierto, que algunos países han tenido avances en este tema, todavía hay mucho por realizar, en particular en la aplicación de procedimientos de recolección y procesamientos, debido a los riesgos que implican su almacenamiento y manipulación informales sin cumplir con los requisitos de protección necesarios.
This is why it is necessary to move towards sustainable management, aimed at reducing waste generation, recycling and reuse.

Por esto es necesario dirigirnos a la gestión sostenible, orientada a la reducción de la generación de residuos, reciclaje y reutilización.

Ciertamente la brecha existente entre lo que genera la humanidad y lo que se recicla es abismal, esperemos que el ser humano tome conciencia y realice acciones mas efectivas en esta materia.
