Happy to be with you again. This is my entry to the Amazing Nature Contest - July 2021- #02. It is a simple but representative example of the manifestation of amazing nature in urban areas, as a result of the love and affection for plants.

It is about the unexpected and pleasant encounter with some bright and attractive flowers, in an unusual place, which brightened up the start of my working day with their colour.
Se trata de mi inesperado y grato encuentro con unas resplandecientes y atractivas flores, en un lugar poco usual para ello, que alegraron el inicio de mi jornada de trabajo con su colorido.
Since two months ago we have no internet service in the area where I live, so I can't do my online activities from home. For this reason, we decided to go to my sister's flat as an alternative to fulfil our commitments
Desde hace dos meses no tenemos servicio de internet en la zona donde vivo, por lo cual no puedo realizar las actividades online desde mi hogar. Por esta razón, decidimos ir al apartamento de mi hermana, como una alternativa para cumplir con nuestros compromisos
The pleasant surprise we received was that as we walked up the stairs, a pair of distinguished upright flowers offered us a colourful welcome, captivating me immediately.
La grata sorpresa que recibimos fue que cuando subíamos por las escaleras, un par de flores distinguidamente erguidas nos ofreció un colorido recibimiento, cautivándome de inmediato.
We moved closer and appreciated their beauty even more. They seemed to silently watch over the corridor on the first floor where they are located, that looks different from the others, more luminous and joyful with its presence. Wonderful and surprising nature!
Nos acercamos y apreciamos más su belleza. Parecían vigilar silenciosamente el pasillo del primer piso donde se encuentran, que se aprecia diferentes a los otros, más iluminado y alegre con su presencia. Maravillosa y sorprendente naturaleza!
Because of the beauty, shape and colour these flowers are popularly known as Orange Lily. With this information, I started my research to know more about this plant, and the results were very interesting. I share them below.

General Characteristics.

Its scientific name is Hippeastrum puniceum of the Amaryllidaceae family and it is not a lily, although its morphology is very similar to these.
Su nombre científico es Hippeastrum puniceum de la familia de Amaryllidaceae y no es un lirio, aun cuando su morfología es muy semejante a estos.
The genus Hippeastrum, meaning "knight's star", was identified and coined by the botanist William Dean Herbert, who separated it from the genus Amaryllys, of the lilies, with which it is mistakenly identified
El género Hippeastrum, que significa ”estrella de caballero”, fue identificado y acuñado por el botánico William Dean Herbert, que lo separó del genero Amaryllys, de los lirios, con el cual erradamente se les identifica.
It is popularly known by different compound names, mostly by the word Lirio: Lirio Naranja, Lirio de Barbados, Lirio de Pascua and, in Venezuela also as Juancito.
Popularmente se le conoce con diferentes nombres compuesto, en su mayoría por la palabra Lirio: Lirio Naranja, Lirio de Barbados, Lirio de Pascua y, en Venezuela también como Juancito.
Because of its flowers, it is mainly an ornamental plant, but it also has medicinal properties, which I will present to you later, according to the sources consulted.

It grows well in warm climates, so it is distributed in North America (Mexico and USA), South America (Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Perú and Guyana), among others.

It is cultivated in pots and in gardens, reaching a larger size in the garden, reaching up to 50 cm in height.
Es cultivada en macetas y en jardines, alcanzando mayor tamaño en el jardín, llegando hasta 50 cm de alto.
Flowers

They are deep orange in the shape of an elongated bell, growing in pairs at the same height at the end of slender, upright stems of about 50 cm.
Son de color naranja intenso en forma de campana alargada, crecen en pares a la misma altura en el extremo de los esbeltos y erguidos tallos de unos 50 cm.
They are approximately 5 to 7 cm in size and can remain on the plant for several days in all their splendour.
Su tamaño es de aproximadamente de 5 a 7 cm, pueden permanecer varios días en la planta en todo su esplendor.
Another interesting feature of these flowers is that they consist of tepals. That is, there is no difference in colour between the petals and the sepals. Their texture is very soft and delicate.
Otra característica interesante de estas flores es que están formadas por tépalos. Es decir no hay diferencia de color entre los pétalos y los sépalos. Su textura es muy suave y delicada.
The base of the central part is tinged with light whitish brushstrokes, note the artistic detail of the centre of the flower, the colours and the subtle lines of the sepals, as part of an extraordinary and unique design.
La base de la parte central esta matizada con ligeras pinceladas blanquecina, observa el detalle artístico del centro de la flor, los colores y las sutiles líneas de los sépalos, como parte de un diseño extraordinario y único.
This contrast highlights the striking, shimmering pistils, one of the most fascinating parts of the flowers, because of their shape, colour and diversity. I love them !
Este contraste resalta los llamativos y resplandecientes pistilos, una de las partes más fascinantes de las flores, por su forma, colorido y diversidad. Me encantan!
And let's not forget the leaves, elongated, smooth and bright green, also beautiful.
Y no olvidemos las hojas, alargadas, lisas y de color verde brillante, también hermosas.
Care of the plant and use
Cuidados de la planta y usos
It does not require special care, only direct or semi-direct sunlight and moderate watering, with good drainage. It is advisable to use organic fertiliser, especially if it is in a pot.
No requiere de cuidados especiales, solo debe recibir incidencia directa o semidirecta de luz solar y riego moderado, con buen drenaje. Es recomendable usar abono orgánico, especialmente si se encuentra en maceta.
The reproduction of the plant can be done using some bulbs or offspring of the plant, that is to say, small shoots.
La reproducción de la planta puede realizarse usando algunos bulbos o hijos de la planta, es decir pequeños retoños.
It is a very generous plant, with this care and love it rewards us with its beautiful flowers.
Es una planta muy generosa, con estos cuidados y amor nos recompensa con sus hermosas flores.
As for its uses, they are primarily ornamental because of its beautiful flowers. But there are also some published references to medicinal uses (see resources used) of the roots and flowers, which are worth mentioning.
En relación a sus usos son primordialmente ornamentales por sus hermosas flores. Pero también han sido publicados algunas referencias de usos medicinales, (ver recursos utilizados) de las raíces y flores, que vale la pena mencionar.
The flowers are attributed with antipasmodic properties, the roots are laxative and are also used for asthma, even though they can cause vomiting.
A las flores se le atribuyen propiedades antipasmódicas, las raíces son laxantes y también son utilizadas para el asma, aun cuando pueden provocar vómitos.
