Shadows and reflections of the solar eclipse of last October 2023. 🌘

Greetings friends and members of the community. On this occasion I want to show you some elements of shadows and reflections in nature related to the most recent solar eclipse that took place last October 14, 2023. This astronomical phenomenon could be perceived in some regions of the Earth, but only observed directly by those people who had sophisticated instruments for it (due to the danger of its direct observation because of the damage it can cause to the eyesight).

Now, one of the indirect ways to observe this phenomenon is from the shadows cast by the leaves of the trees on the ground, whose shadow shows the appearance of the solar disk at the time of the eclipse, which as can be seen in these images had at that time a shape similar to the "small moons", just at the peak of the phenomenon seen from my country as a partial eclipse.

The projection of these shadows is produced by the effect of the structure of the leaves of the trees, in which their tiny interstices or pores act as a natural filter of the light from the eclipsed solar disk, projecting on the ground numerous miniature forms of the eclipse. This phenomenon is known as the "pinhole effect", and offers one of the safest indirect ways of observing solar eclipse phenomena.


Another indirect way to observe the astronomical phenomenon is through the reflection of the light of the eclipsed celestial body produced by the lens of the cameras of our mobile devices. As can be seen in these captures, between the plumes of the palm a green reflection of the solar disk that was beginning to be eclipsed at that precise moment can be appreciated, producing a concavity in its lower edge that corresponds to the portion of the lunar disk that was interposed between the Earth and the sun.
