A Tour of the City's Historic Squares (Eng/Esp)

Today’s tour takes us through three iconic squares in Cumana, all of which are located very close to one another, right in the heart of the city. The afternoon was a bit cloudy; thunder rumbled in the distance, and rain looked imminent, but that didn’t stop us from enjoying this stroll.
We’ll start with Square Bolivar, perhaps the largest and most striking square in the entire state of Sucre, which is why it’s the favorite spot for public events and, of course, the chosen location for the lavish Christmas decorations that children love so much. There were few people in the square today, perhaps because of the bad weather. However, cheerful music could be heard coming from the “Costa Llanera” restaurant—formerly the Jardín Sport—which lent the place a more upbeat atmosphere.
On the other hand, Square Pichincha had a gloomier atmosphere because the abundant vegetation blocks both natural and artificial light. There were more people here, mostly men coming in and out of the El Colmao bar. This plaza presents a contrast because the bar is flanked by two places of worship, so on Sundays it’s common to see, in the same space, religious activities on one side and people drinking and gambling on the other. The artificial lighting visible in the photos comes from Café con Bracamonte, a very popular establishment in this area.
I kept walking, and the atmosphere changed drastically when I reached Andrés Eloy Blanco Square, where I saw couples in love chatting on the benches, while some children ran back and forth as their parents took a short break. Of the three public spaces I visited, this plaza was the best lit, but also the least quiet due to the traffic and the number of passersby moving about in the afternoon.
It's always nice to walk around the city and take in every detail. These places are there to offer new experiences, but a lot also depends on your mood and the weather—so you don't have to run off if it starts to rain.

El recorrido de hoy nos lleva por tres emblemáticas plazas de Cumaná, las cuales se encuentran muy cerca una de otra, en pleno centro de la ciudad. La tarde lucía un poco nublada, se escuchaban truenos en el ambiente y amenazaba con llover, pero eso no fue impedimento para disfrutar de este paseo.
Empezaremos por la plaza Bolívar, quizás la más grande y llamativa de todo el estado Sucre, de allí que sea la predilecta para realizar eventos públicos y, por supuesto, es la elegida para la fastuosa decoración navideña que tanto agrada a los niños. En este espacio había hoy pocas personas, quizás por el mal tiempo. Sin embargo, desde el restaurante "Costa Llanera", antiguo Jardín Sport, se escuchaba música alegre, lo que concedía un ambiente más optimista al lugar.
Por otra parte, la Plaza Pichincha se vestía de una atmósfera más lúgubre porque la vegetación abundante impide el paso de la luz tanto natural como artificial. Acá había más personas, sobre todo hombres que entraban y salían de la tasca El Colmao. En esta plaza se presenta un contraste porque ese negocio tiene dos cultos religiosos a los lados, así que los días domingo es factible observar, en un mismo espacio, actividades religiosas por una parte y personas bebiendo y apostando en la otra. La iluminación artificial que se aprecia en las fotos proviene de Café con Bracamonte, un local comercial muy popular en esta zona.
Seguí caminando y el ambiente cambió de forma drástica cuando llegué a la plaza Andrés Eloy Blanco porque observé a parejas de enamorados conversando en los bancos, en tanto algunos niños corrían de un lugar a otro mientras sus padres descansaban un rato. De los tres espacios públicos que visité, esta plaza era la más iluminada, pero también la menos silenciosa por el trafico y la cantidad de transeúntes desplazándose en horas de la tarde.
Siempre es grato recorrer la ciudad y observar cada detalle. Los lugares están allí para vivir nuevas experiencias, pero también mucho depende del estado anímico y las condiciones climáticas para evitar salir corriendo si empieza a llover.

I’m liking Cumaná more and more every day—it’s a beautiful place with great historical sites. I especially like it since I was told the power doesn't go out in that area... hmm, interesting.
