Humboldt Avenue: Art, History and Tradition (Eng/Esp)

Humboldt Avenue in Cumana is a major thoroughfare that also pays tribute to a German geographer who, together with Aime Bonpland, undertook an exhaustive exploration of the Orinoco River; there, the two described the wonders of this land, and their discoveries have been passed down to posterity through their documentation of many species and plants previously unknown.

Today, this avenue has been remodeled and features several murals and various gardens. Perhaps the most striking feature is the recreation of mushrooms and worms made of cement; they look very curious and reminded me of the video game character Mario Bros. Several designs have been featured along this avenue at the intersection with Cochabamba Street, and right now another variation is on display.

The murals feature a depiction of the traditional game “El muñeco,” which was very popular in the city’s neighborhoods; in some areas it’s called “Pise" and in others “El avión.” I still remember how much fun I had playing it with my friends. Today, screens have taken center stage in children’s lives, and these traditional games are a dying breed.

The mural also references Mother Earth and her ability to produce food. An Indigenous figure accompanies these images, which speak to culture, history, and traditions. In addition, certain walls of the Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia are highlighted, along with a mention of the 511th anniversary of the founding of Cumana.

This avenue is very busy; it’s a must-pass route for anyone heading to or returning from the land and sea passenger terminals. Also located along this avenue are Ayacucho Park, the Ayacucho Museum, and Ayacucho Plaza, as well as ice cream shops, the Mural de los Cultores, the Hipergalerias Shopping Center, the amusement park, and the Mi Jardin restaurant.
