Mariño Square, a Hidden Gem (Eng/Esp)

English version

Walking through the city, from El Elevado to downtown, I noticed a man standing in front of a statue, gazing at it with a certain devotion. When I passed by, he struck up a conversation, asking me if I knew Colonel Mariño. That stranger pointed out that I was in Mariño Square and, with great pride, repeated the name of the illustrious national hero. I had never visited this place before, and it was a new experience to explore it.

Beyond the imposing statue of Santiago Mariño, this place caught my attention because of its many palm trees; their slender forms lent elegance to the public space located behind the Legislative Council. I enjoyed walking around here; the color blue served as a marker, indicating the boundary between the concrete and the soil of the gardens, which were teeming with greenery. That connection with nature is always comforting, especially in such a hot city.

Wherever I looked, I could see enormous trees; I took several photographs and continued on toward Guaquerí Park, which is also a stop on the way to downtown. I passed Santiago Mariño Square, named after an important hero of the independence movement—though his achievements, at least in this state, are overshadowed by everything Antonio José de Sucre represents to the local people.

Until now, I didn’t know that this space—between the Legislative Council and the Cumaná Barracks—was a plaza. I usually passed through here without stopping to take a closer look, since traffic in this area tends to be chaotic—we’re at a crossroads—and my attention was focused on crossing the street.
