Otra historia de superación deportiva: "Hustle" (Mis impresiones, Esp/ Ing)
Amigos, anoche vi la película Hustle y lo primero que llamó mi atención fue la actuación de su protagonista Adam Sandler porque en esta ocasión, al igual que en Uncut Gems y The Meyerowitz Stories, se inclinó hacia lo dramático en lugar de permanecer en su zona de confort que es la comedia fácil, aunque aquí encontraremos una dosis de humor pero bien dosificada. Puntualizo que me gustó mucho la primera parte del filme, mis expectativas estaban altas por la manera en que se presentaban las tramas, pero la buena impresión se derrumbó en la segunda parte porque resultó predecible con un desenlace absurdo.
¿Estamos ante otra película de superación?, ¿Hay algo novedoso? Después de una revisión exhaustiva de otros filmes con tintes deportivos, el análisis me lleva a indicar que el argumento de esta cinta está muy manoseado, repite las mismas fórmulas y cae en los lugares comunes que se han visto tantas veces en el cine. El atleta que cae, luego entrena hasta un nivel superlativo, busca su redención y triunfa. De allí que Hustle sea otra historia sobre anhelo deportivo que pierde su atractivo a medida que avanza. Uno de los aspectos más destacables es utilizar a referentes reales del baloncesto profesional y amateur, lo cual se lleva muy bien a la pantalla, pero también tiene sus contradicciones.
Adam Sandler interpreta a Stanley Sugerman, un cazatalentos que ha pasado años viajando por el mundo buscando jugadores para los Sixers de Filadelfia en la NBA, aunque su deseo es ser entrenador en la liga para permanecer cerca de su casa junto a su esposa Teresa (Queen Latifah) y su hija Alex (Jordania Hull). Sin embargo, todo cambia cuando el propietario del equipo (Robert Duvall) muere y su hijo (Ben Foster) queda a cargo. Para entonces, Sugerman había propuesto a la gerencia que contrate a Bo Cruz, un jugador que descubrió en un suburbio de España, pero tras ser evaluado en un partido contra otros aspirantes a basquetbolistas profesionales, donde demostró indisciplina, baja forma física y frágil concentración, se descartó su fichaje.
Are we facing another overcoming film? Is there something new? After an exhaustive review of other films with sports overtones, the analysis leads me to indicate that the plot of this film is very hackneyed, repeats the same formulas and falls into the common places that have been seen so many times in the cinema. The athlete who falls, then trains to a superlative level, seeks his redemption and triumphs. Hence, Hustle is yet another story about sporting longing that loses its allure as it goes on. One of the most noteworthy aspects is the use of real references from professional and amateur basketball, which works very well on screen, but it also has its contradictions.
Adam Sandler plays Stanley Sugerman, a talent scout who has spent years traveling the world looking for players for the Philadelphia Sixers in the NBA, although his desire is to be a coach in the league to stay close to home with his wife Teresa (Queen). Latifah) and her daughter Alex (Jordan Hull). However, everything changes when the team's owner (Robert Duvall) dies and his son (Ben Foster) is left in charge. By then, Sugerman had proposed to the management that they hire Bo Cruz, a player he discovered in a suburb of Spain, but after being evaluated in a game against other aspiring professional basketball players, where he showed indiscipline, poor physical fitness and fragile concentration, his signing was ruled out.
Hasta acá el filme se puede decir que va bien, pero comienzan a observarse incoherencias como el hecho de que el jugador extranjero, interpretado por el NBA Juancho Hernangómez, aprendió el idioma inglés y la jerga callejera de un día para otro. Además en su prueba lo confrontan directamente contra Kermit, papel que representa el NBA Anthony Edwars, cuando la dinámica del baloncesto indica que al ser de distintas características deben desempeñarse en posiciones diferentes sobre la cancha. Tras este primer fracaso, Sugermen renuncia a los Sixers y decide entrenar por su cuenta a Bo Cruz con el objetivo de que sea incluido en el draft, especie de lotería en la cual los equipos de la NBA seleccionan a los jugadores allí inscritos.
Los guionistas Taylor Materne y Will Fetters basan la trama principal en la figura del scout, quien, en este caso, a sus 50 años de edad, renuncia a su estabilidad económica y laboral en aras de apostarlo todo por un jugador desconocido, en este caso por Bo Cruz. Juancho Hernangómez debuta en la actuación y considero que en la primera parte del filme reproduce bien algunas características de los delincuentes juveniles, aunque es obvio que su representación carece de fuerza dramática y eso afecta, en gran medida, los pasajes cuando su personaje debe mostrarse inestable a nivel psicológico. Sentimientos como la ira y la frustración, tras ser intimidado y caer en provocaciones verbales, se presentan como su debilidad, pero lamentablemente en el filme no se indica cuál fue el tratamiento para superar su desequilibrio emocional. Por tanto, se infiere que lo hizo por cuenta propia y en poco tiempo, atentando otra vez contra la verosimilitud.
Como se dijo anteriormente, Hustle repite la fórmula de otras películas deportivas, de nuevo se presentan sesiones de entrenamiento y demostraciones de destrezas. Desde que Silvester Stallone saltó a la fama con su saga de Rocky, la puesta en escena de rutinas de ejercicios físicos han sido lo sustancioso de incontables filmes. Recientemente, ocurrió lo mismo con las dos entregas de Creed, y acá es más de lo mismo, inclusive se alude a la franquicia de Stallone porque nació en Filadelfia y una de sus más recordadas escenas es alcanzar la cima de una escalinata mientras el protagonista corre a todo pulmón.
So far the film can be said to be going well, but inconsistencies begin to be observed, such as the fact that the foreign player, played by NBA player Juancho Hernangómez, learned the English language and street slang from one day to the next. In addition, in his test they confront him directly against Kermit, a role played by the NBA Anthony Edwards, when the dynamics of basketball indicate that, being of different characteristics, they must perform in different positions on the court. After this first failure, Sugermen resigns from the Sixers and decides to train Bo Cruz on his own with the aim of being included in the draft, a kind of lottery in which the NBA teams select the players registered there.
Scriptwriters Taylor Materne and Will Fetters base the main plot on the figure of the scout, who, in this case, at 50 years of age, gives up his economic and job stability in order to bet everything on an unknown player, in this case by Bo Cruz. Juancho Hernangómez makes his acting debut and I think that in the first part of the film he reproduces well some characteristics of juvenile delinquents, although it is obvious that his portrayal lacks dramatic strength and that greatly affects the passages when his character must be unstable on a psychological level. Feelings such as anger and frustration, after being intimidated and falling into verbal provocations, are presented as his weakness, but unfortunately the film does not indicate what the treatment was to overcome his emotional imbalance. Therefore, it is inferred that he did it on his own and in a short time, again attempting against the credibility.
As said before, Hustle repeats the formula of other sports movies, again featuring training sessions and skill demonstrations. Since Silvester Stallone rose to fame with his Rocky saga, the staging of physical exercise routines has been the substance of countless films. Recently, the same thing happened with the two installments of Creed, and here it is more of the same, it even alludes to the Stallone franchise because he was born in Philadelphia and one of his most remembered scenes is reaching the top of a stairway while the protagonist runs at full lung.
El director Jeremiah Zagar nos intenta vender un drama familiar con tintes deportivos y puede que funcione para la mayoría de las audiencias porque este cine de tipo comercial suele ser rentable si se aplican fórmulas con eficiencia. Las coreografías en las escenas de baloncesto lucen bien logradas, en buena parte porque están realizadas por jugadores y no por actores, pero, por otra parte, considero que las escenas dramáticas carecen de fuerza, debido a fallas de actuación y de guion. Se nota la ausencia de mayor profundidad para conmover al público.
En este sentido, veremos que las calamidades personales de Sugermen y Cruz se muestran por pinceladas, cada quien arrastra una historia de errores que desea revertir, Sandler se esfuerza por convencer, pero Hernangómez queda en deuda. Amenizando dichas escenas escucharemos la selección musical a cargo de Dan Deacon, la cual me pareció buena, desde mi criterio cumple con los estándares del género. Cada compás y canción elegida se adapta a las circunstancias que se viven en la película. Este elemento está muy bien acompañado con los primeros planos y la fotografía bien ejecutada de Zak Mulligan.
La inclusión de referentes reales como Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Dirk Nowitzki, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, Allen Iverson y Kenny Smith, ex jugadores de la NBA, y otros activos como Boban Marjanovic, Tobias Harris, Seth Curry, Trae Young, Khris Middleton y Kyle Lowry es uno de los puntos fuertes de la película, pero, tal como se explicó anteriormente, al utilizar este tipo de elementos para insertarlos en el contexto del filme, también se debe cuidar el alcance de la ficción porque cuando el personaje de Sugermen sugiere que ha encontrado a un jugador extraordinario, llamado a ser de los mejores europeos que ha llegado a la liga, la verosimilitud comienza a resquebrajarse, aunque Hernangómez demuestra que posee las herramientas para estar en la NBA, en la película no exhibe un talento superlativo como para considerarle una estrella en potencia.
Director Jeremiah Zagar is trying to sell us a sports-tinged family drama and it may work for most audiences because this commercial-type cinema is usually profitable if formulas are applied efficiently. The choreography in the basketball scenes looks well done, largely because they are performed by players and not by actors, but, on the other hand, I consider that the dramatic scenes lack strength, due to acting and script flaws. The absence of greater depth to move the public is noted.
In this sense, we will see that the personal calamities of Sugermen and Cruz are shown by brushstrokes, each one drags a story of mistakes that he wants to reverse, Sandler makes an effort to convince, but Hernangómez is indebted. Enlivening these scenes we will listen to the musical selection by Dan Deacon, which seemed good to me, from my point of view it meets the standards of the genre. Each beat and song chosen is adapted to the circumstances that are experienced in the film. This element is very well accompanied by close-ups and well-executed photography by Zak Mulligan.
The inclusion of real referents such as Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Dirk Nowitzki, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, Allen Iverson and Kenny Smith, former NBA players, and other active players like Boban Marjanovic, Tobias Harris, Seth Curry, Trae Young, Khris Middleton and Kyle Lowry is one of the strong points of the film, but, as explained above, when using this type of elements to insert them in the context of the film, the scope of the fiction must also be taken care of because when the character of Sugermen suggests that he has found a an extraordinary player, called to be one of the best Europeans who has come to the league, the verisimilitude begins to crack, although Hernangómez shows that he has the tools to be in the NBA, in the film he does not exhibit superlative talent to consider him a star in power.
Para destacar también el hecho de presentar al internet como medio para descubrir talento deportivo, publicar un video en la red ha funcionado para llamar la atención de scouts y en Hustle ese fenómeno resulta fundamental para el desarrollo de la historia. La frase “Nunca te rindas” es presentada como un mensaje recurrente y se relaciona con el conflicto personal de los personajes principales, cada uno confronta sus propios problemas y depende de la intensidad de sus anhelos para superarlos, así que cada nivel alcanzado merece una celebración.
Como hemos visto Hustle tiene aciertos y desaciertos, pero según mi criterio no logró ser una realización memorable. Es otro drama deportivo de perseverancia y superación personal con algunos giros jocosos, así que puede resultar disfrutable y entretenida para toda la familia, sin esperar más que eso, pues de lo contrario, se empezarán a notar agujeros narrativos, incoherencias y propuestas inadmisibles desde este plano de la realidad.
As we have seen, Hustle has successes and failures, but in my opinion it was not a memorable production. It is another sports drama of perseverance and self-improvement with some humorous twists, so it can be enjoyable and entertaining for the whole family, without expecting more than that, because otherwise, narrative holes, inconsistencies and inadmissible proposals will begin to be noticed from this plane of reality.

Yo fui con expectativas super altas por todo lo que se estaba hablando en internet, pero igual quedé con un sabor un poco amargo, concuerdo que al final resulta ser más de lo mismo.
Aplaudo que hayan colocado a tantos jugadores de la NBA, eso estuvo más que bien, pero hay mucha irregularidad, por ejemplo no había pensado lo que dices de Anthony Edwards, la verdad es que no deberían de enfrentarse en una cancha, son roles muy diferentes por diferencia de tamaño.
Cuando se acabó la película quedé sorprendído, no sabía que ya había terminado, realmente esa segunda parte si quedo a deber, pero bueno tampoco es que sea mala, pero no es lo que se pintaba, simplemente disfrutable.
Me alegra que compartas mi visión, son muchos detalles que descuidaron y terminaron afectando la verosimilitud de la cinta. Me pasó lo mismo con ese final, me sorprendió lo absurdo que fue. De pronto, casi por magia, todo se resolvió. Yo también tenía expectativas más altas, pero se desmoronaron a poco tiempo que avanzó el metraje. I saw the movie for the simple fact that Adam Sandler was in it, and after seeing him in Uncut Gems, I was very impressed by his dramatization, out of that stereotype that was characterized by doing more comedy, although in this movie I didn't like it so much, but I had to see it to see how it developed.
