I Thought My WiFi Was Just Slow. Turns Out My Lunch Might Be the Problem.

I came across a BBC article about the weird things that can mess with your WiFi, and honestly, some of them were things I'd never even considered.

Most of us blame our internet provider or restart the router a dozen times, but sometimes the problem is sitting right inside your house.

Your microwave

This one is probably the most surprising. Back in Australia, astronomers spent 17 years trying to figure out mysterious radio signals that kept appearing. People blamed solar flares, and some even joked about aliens. The real cause? Someone opening the office microwave around lunchtime. It was interfering with their equipment.

Fish tanks

If you have an aquarium, it could be affecting your signal more than you think.

WiFi signals don't like passing through water. A large fish tank can absorb or weaken the signal, creating what engineers call a "shadow" where the connection becomes weaker.

Mirrors

This one caught me off guard.

WiFi uses radio waves, and radio waves behave a lot like light. Just as a mirror reflects light, large mirrors and certain metal surfaces can reflect WiFi signals too. That can create dead spots or make the signal bounce around instead of reaching your device directly.

Winter weather

Rain usually isn't enough to ruin your connection inside the house. But if your internet relies on wireless links between buildings or long outdoor connections, heavy snow, storms, or freezing conditions can weaken the signal.

It's funny how we usually think bad WiFi means it's time to call the internet company, when sometimes the problem is your microwave, your fish tank, or even the giant mirror in your hallway.

Technology feels invisible until you realize just how many everyday objects can get in its way. Sometimes the fix isn't buying a better router. It's just understanding what's already around it.
